A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads. In this week's edition I made jello shots and July 4th shenanigans were had.
Let's Make Jello Shots!
The weekend before the 4th I was sitting around wasting time on the internet as one does when a jello shot recipe came to my attention. I thought about it for one nanosecond before dropping the link in our family group text to ask if anyone wanted them for our July 4th party. In pretty short order everyone responded that they did.
Many years ago, I made a non-alcoholic jello creation for a July 4 party so I do have some experience in this area. I knew that it would be a fun, no stress project, but beyond that there was something very familiar that was calling me that I couldn't quite put my finger on.
The morning of the day before the party, I got to work. I didn't trust myself to eyeball three perfectly even layers, so I measured the cups and found that they held three tablespoons of liquid.
I mixed up the blue layer and measured out one tablespoon of liquid into the cups. I was not mad when I found out that the recipe that said it was 24 servings filled 32 shot cups.
I tucked the shots into the fridge until just before lunch when I made the white layer. As I noted in my other post about a red, white, and blue jello dessert, sweetened condensed milk is not really white, but when diluted with water/vodka/gelatine, it eventually looks pretty close. I was the most concerned about the white layer setting properly, so I gave it an even longer chill time than the blue layer before proceeding.
A few hours later I made the red layer and set everything back in the fridge to chill. I was a little more liberal with the pour on the final layer, so I ended up two shot cups short. News flash: no one at the party complained about the two blue and white shots.
And then voila, everything was firmly set and I capped the shots.
The question is: who wore it best?
But seriously, the jello shots were a huge hit at the party, and they were very easy to make. I don't feel that they are very strong, so unless someone ate a ton of them I don't think they would do anything silly. It's a given that I'll be making these again.
Doggo did not mind that the party dessert stole her look.
Whatever With Your Jello Shots. I Came Here for a Quick Dinner Idea
Yep, I've got one of those too. It might not look like much but Recipe Rebel's one pan chicken meatballs with orzo was fast and easy. I used pre-made Costco chicken meatballs to make it even easier.
Workouts
I finished the bike trail that I started last month. It was a 30 mile trail and I'd done 10 miles out and back. I found out that the rest of the trail is a loop, so I was able to finish it off in one session.
Watching
Nada. What can I say, these days there are always enough random Youtube videos to fill my TV time.
Reading
I finished what I started last week:
- The Tell by Amy Griffin was a very good and very disturbing trauma memoir about a compulsive runner who tried psychedelic therapy and learned exactly "what she was running from". It was a tough read, but an important cautionary tale of what can happen when your only option in life is to be a people pleaser.
- Kindred by Octavia Butler. Solid thumbs up, solid "I can't believe I waited so long to read this". Great when paired with Gone With the Wind as I did, and I would assume that it's just fine on its own without GWTW.
My current book is What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown. It's about a girl who is raised in a cabin in the woods by her single dad, and where I am right now around the 10% mark she's in her teens and trying to suss out whether continuing to live with her dad is a reasonable life choice or if she should maybe get out into the world and find out how people who are not her dad live their lives. There are definite shades of These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant, in an "if you liked that you'll probably like this" kind of way. I picked this up because Sarah's Bookshelves raved about it and I've heard some other cheers for it. The bloggy archives tell me that I've read two other books by this author - one I do not remember and the other was a DNF, but Sarah also said that she'd had a DNF with this author. I'm just mentioning that so that you know what I know at this point, but so far all signs point to a good book.
Upcoming Bookclub Heads Up
If you would like to read a book with me, my book club will be reading The Lion Women of Tehran for an early September meeting, so I'll be starting it in late August. I heard of this book when it came out last year but didn't get enough buzz back then to pick it up. I feel like out of nowhere EVERYONE is reading it, so I'm excited to have an excuse to join in. Stephany's podcast partner Bri raved about it on their most recent episode.
Tell Me Something Else That's Going On
I'm so happy that you asked! There was a Very Important Birthday in our house this week. Now of course there is no way to know Doggo's exact birthday but we settled on July 4 because we like dog birthdays that fall on holidays (our previous dog was born on Easter), and it's a reasonable estimate based on her shelter paperwork. Her present unwrapping skills are improving.
The "ladybug on a rope tied to a sunflower" present was a hit. Pro tip: Home Goods is where it's at for dog toys.
Happy 2nd birthday, Ms Bloggo Doggo!!! Who's made jello shots or a jello dessert? Who's read Lion Women of Tehran?
Look at you with another fitness accomplishment. Way to go on completing the bike trail!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI definitely didn’t expect to learn about jello layering precision today, but here we are, and I’m impressed! These look fantastic. You’ve officially claimed the title of Jello Shot Queen in your family, no question.
ReplyDeleteAlso, huge congrats on finishing the bike trail loop! Extra points for wrapping it up so efficiently! Got your eye on the next adventure yet?
Last week was sploots, this week was jello shots. Now we just have to keep the momentum going with some kind of grand lesson next week.
DeleteJello shots! Haven't done one of those in quite some time!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the bike trail! That's a big accomplishment!
Happy birthday Doggo!! Hope she enjoys her ladybug.
I wonder if I should read The Tell? I mean, I currently have like eight library books and one more to be picked up, but I wonder if I should put it on the TBR...
Hmm...I think because your TBR is so full that The Tell is optional. It was very good and very thought provoking, but it's also about trauma, so it comes with a lot of heavy stuff.
DeleteHappy Birthday Doggo! Glad she liked her present.
ReplyDeleteThe jello shots look amazing! I can imagine they were a big hit. On a food note- I made those bean tacos you posted about last week for my husband and daughter, and they liked them! I saved the recipe to make again.
I can't wait to read Kindred! I'm about to start Stephen King's Holly right now, and Kindred is next in line. It's coming with me on my trip.
I'm glad to hear that the tacos were a hit! Sarah's recipes are so good.
DeleteThe jello shots were a great idea -- I'm glad they turned out so beautifully and were such a hit! Love the photos of Doggo in her red-white-and-blue and unwrapping and enjoying her gift. Happy birthday sweet pup!
ReplyDeleteMy family watched Now You See Me last night, on the points that it was about magicians and it was a family friendly flick. Despite a pretty great cast, it was so dumb and I'm still mad about it today.
I always say that I am willing to do just about anything as long as my family is around, so if a movie is bad with them, it's a BAD movie.
DeleteMy Mr makes "fancy" jell-o shots for cookouts and parties. He's done candy bar flavored ones (Twix, Butterfingers, etc.) that went over really well. This year he did pina colada ones with fresh pineapple on top. Congrats on the bike trail - I love a loop! Happy, happy birthday to Doggo!
ReplyDeleteNom! I am taking notes on potential jello shot ideas. I have my eye on some margarita ones, but I'd be down for pina colada as well.
DeleteThose jello shots are so fun and festive! They are a pesky thing to make with the waiting between layers but the payoff is worth it!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading "Knife River" which Annie from The Bookshelf in GA recommended last year and I am finally getting around to reading. It's a literary mystery of sorts. I'm enjoying it so far!
Making jello shots goes well with the WFH schedule. Make a layer, go to work, take a break to make another layer...
DeleteI've never made Jell-O shots, nor had one, but have made Jell-O desserts. I like Jell-O which is a controversial admission, but there you go. However I like my interactions with Jell-O to be alcohol-free.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with liking jello! It's not something that I crave, but I enjoyed making the stained glass jello back in the day (non-alcoholic).
DeleteObviously, Doggo wore the colours, best.
ReplyDeleteThose Jello shots are so festive. I don't generally do alcohol (and I'm not American), but full points for creating something fun and delicious!
Birchie...what are you doing???? Don't you know my TBR is already insanely long and now you're making suggestions and I am logged into my library and putting in more holds. There simply isn't enough time!!!!
It would be very easy to skip the blue layer and the alcohol and then you'd have a Canadian shot!
DeleteNow you know why I don't keep a TBR! It's just a mockery of books that I don't have time to read.
I've never had a Jello shot! They look like fun and festive little treats. I like Jello in general, except for the lemon and lime flavors. I haven't read The Lion Women. I'll have to look into it. Happy birthday to Bloggo Doggo!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you - lemon and lime is a bit much for jello.
DeleteIt's been years since I had a jello shot. Yours are lovely.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your sweet dog. Of course, all the fireworks and parades are just for her.
Most dogs are scared of fireworks, so anytime that something goes boom, we tell Doggo that it's just people celebrating her birthday. I don't think she's buying what we're selling.
DeleteWow. I should make one of my pets' birthday be 4th of July so I'll stop being such a grump about that particular holiday. *sigh* I've never had a Jello shot. I dislike Jello in general and don't drink, so there's nothing appealing about it, but yours look SO ADORABLE.
ReplyDeleteThe whole point of the jello shots is that they look pretty.
DeleteDo Hannah and Zelda have official birthdays? I want to hear more about this!
I have never made Jell-o shots and I think I may have had one or two before but nothing big. I have read Lion Women and liked it a lot! Happy birthday to the pupster and congrats to you for finishing the biking trail! I am having a bit of trouble getting into books at the moment and sometimes just have to binge episodes of Choose FI, as those are kind of mindless. I can't seem to fully focus on a book (audio) lately!
ReplyDeleteI always say that I take notes when I read blogs, so when you talked before about listening to old episodes of Choose FI, I jumped on that train. I got to hear an episode with Carl of 1500 Days from before he fully retired, and an episode with JL Collins that was a response to a bizarre Suze Orman anti-FIRE rant. Fun stuff!
DeleteDid you get to the Purple Life episode yet? She is not yet retired! It is funny to hear her pre-FI!
DeleteYES! Purple was actually my intro to a lot of these podcasts. A while back I listened to every podcast that she was on, and a few of the shows stuck.
DeleteHappy Birthday Doggo! It looks like she had a great day, and I love her patriotic outfit.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never had a Jell-O shot…where do you get the little shot cups?
Amazon. I used the link from the recipe. It's a set of 100 and this project used 34 of the cups so that means more jello shots will be coming.
DeleteNow look honestly jello shots are nothing special but they are fun.
This post made me smile so much. Happy bday Doggo, you patriotic canine.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed Jell-O shots in my life- mostly years back. Yours are so festive and fun. They look yummy. I love jello and was always psyched to eat at cafeteria style restaurants as a kid because JELLO!
I have not read that book, but I hope to read it at the same time as you because it sounds right up my alley. I am hoping to check out Glory Over Everything for my trip to Louisville.
I learned today that you and I share something in common besides no makeup (well I do mascara occasionally) - neither of us have a TBR list. ;)
Seriously - who has time for a TBR? I hear about great books all the time, so I'm never going to go too long without something to read.
DeleteI feel like jello was something special when I was a kid, so for that reason I have fond memories of it.
I used to work at a 4 star hotel in San Francisco, and sometimes we would get leftover desserts from banquets in the employee cafeteria. Can I tell you how excited we were when it was jello? SO EXCITED!
Deletewow those jello shots look amazing! I am very impressed by your layering. Because I am a simple human I first thought you were doing different color Jello shots and was very impressed to realize it was layered shots in super cute lidded containers.
ReplyDeleteI have fond college memories of Jello shots. Actually, I have college memories of them. Not sure they're that fond...
Just sayin'...making jello shots (non alcoholic of course) would be a really fun project to do with the kiddos sometime.
DeleteYes, jello shots are a lot more fun now that we have the wisdom to just have one or two.
Those Jello shots look GREAT! They seem like they take patience to make but the payoff is well worth it. The only time I've had Jello shots was at a 4th of July party, so a nice full circle moment.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I have Lion Women on my bookshelf so I could perhaps join you for the book club!
I loved making the shots - no patience required. It was just a matter of taking a couple of breaks during the workday for each step, and I'm always looking for an excuse to take a break.
DeleteLion Women Unofficial Cool Bloggers Bookclub FTW!
