Weekly Round Up: All Ears!

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition I made a dupe of one of my favorite frozen breakfasts and I had the stupidest thing happen to me.  So stupid that I am going to tell you all about it.

[Writes draft of post with the story of the stupid thing up first and then realizes that it does not segue well into a discussion of food.  Moves it to the end of the post.]

Eats

Remember how enamored I was of this frozen breakfast and how I talked about wanting to make a DIY version?

Well, sometimes I am all talk but not this time.  Here is what I came up with.

The tofu scramble has finely diced mushrooms and broccoli, I believe mostly broccoli stems.  I have not purchased fresh broccoli in a very long time since Costco's frozen broccoli is very good and insanely cheap, so to get my broccoli stems, I went through a bag and chopped off as much as I could.  I chopped the stems up very finely, and added about a cup of chopped mushroom pieces.  I gave the broc & shrooms a good long saute in a little oil and salt, and added a couple of cloves of garlic toward the end.

Then I crumbled up a block of tofu and added it to the pan.  My tofu scramble inspo is 100% from The Cheap Lazy Vegan.  I let the tofu sit until it started to turn golden and tossed it around a few times.  It was looking a little dry so I added a few more squirts of oil.

The next step was to add four tablespoons of  CLV's tofu scramble seasoning, which she recommends making in batches so that you have it on hand when needed.

The end result gave me similar vibes as the Amy's scramble, but without the blandness.

I always keep roasted potatoes in the freezer, so to build the bowl I added some of those and some plant based sausage that I've had in the freezer forever.  I'm not vegan, so normally I eat chicken sausage, but I felt that the drier texture of the plant based sausage fit in better with the tofu.

Final verdict: I feel like I came out of the experiment with a "better" version of the already very good Amy's scramble, so the mission was a success.  The tofu is enough for 4-5 servings.

Workouts

We're out of the death freeze, so hiking is back on the table.  The only problem is that the snow is very tough to walk on.  If it's not one things it's another...I can tell you how the story goes...the snow will melt, it will get muddy and all of the creek crossings will rise, so hiking will get messy.  But difficult/messy hiking beats no hiking.

My sleep was excellent this week, for reasons that we'll get to in a moment.

Watching

I only have three Alfred Hitchcock movies left on the rewatch!

My bookclub is actually a book/movie club, and this month's selection was a movie.  I had never seen Mona Lisa Smile before.  What can I say, 20 years ago the trailer looked boring and it still does today.

But the movie took off and was a very pleasant watching experience.  It's not entirely dissimilar to Dead Poet's Society, but the ladies handle the pressures of school and society much better than the fellas did.

Reading

All quiet on the reading front.  I'm continuing to struggle with The Age of Innocence, but love the CBBC chat.

Inhale, Exhale continues to be delightful, and I've continued to just read a chapter or two a night so that I can savor it.

___________________________________________

Okey dokey, that's the normal stuff that I write about in the weekly posts, let's move on to the thing that happened that made last week not like any other week of my life to date.

Content warning: a non-gross discussion of ear wax follows, so feel free to skip if that's not your thing.  TL;DR everything turned out OK.

All Ears

Last summer when I was in Vancouver, I had a bizarre problem with my ears.  I would wake up with my ears clogged, and try to yawn my way out of it, which would eventually work.  The problem mostly cleared up when I got home, but came back to a lesser extent when I went to New Orleans.

I had my annual physical last Monday, and just for grins I mentioned it to my doc.  She took a look at my ears and told me that I had a large build up of wax.  She suggested using a drugstore product called Debrox drops, and mentioned something offhand about how their office could clean my ears but I might need to see an ENT, and the conversation moved on to other topics and we never got back to it.

A few hours after the appointment I was getting ready to wind down my morning activities for lunch, and I had the random thought that I might as well take a shot at the wax using the only ear cleaning method that I have ever used in my 50 years on this planet.  I don't live under a rock so of course I've heard that you're not supposed to go the peroxide and q-tips route nowadays, but I assumed that was advice meant for other people.  I saturated a q-tip in peroxide and lightly placed it in my ear, and enjoyed the satisfying pop of bubbles.  I moved on to the other ear with a second q-tip.  I only used the q-tips as a vehicle to get the peroxide into my ears and did not do any jabbing or digging with them.

The bubbling eventually died down, but my ears were so clogged that I could barely hear.  No matter, I was sure that it would go away in a moment.

Doggo and I went for our normal lunchtime dog walk, and when I still couldn't hear afterwards, I hit up the drug store for some Debrox drops.  I placed them in one ear and let them soak in for a bit, and then repeated with the other ear.

Um if I couldn't hear before, I really couldn't hear now.  I went about my business and after a few more hours I asked Dr ChatGPT what was up.  The Doctor reported that a buildup of wax would most likely go away after about four days if I kept using the Debrox drops twice a day, but that most people preferred to be able to hear sooner, so a trip to urgent care would do the trick.

I waited overnight and then headed to urgent care on Tuesday morning.  The doc said that the four day thing might or might not be accurate, and rinsed my ears with a special ear wash thingy.  It actually felt very pleasant, but it did not do anything to restore my hearing.  The doc told me that the Debrox needed more time to soak through and gave me the choice of coming back in a few days or going to see an ENT in a few days.  I chose the ENT route and got an appointment for Friday afternoon.

This is a long way of saying that I basically could not hear from Monday to Friday afternoon last week.  I could hear talking as long as it was from a close range, and I could hear audio on headphones, but most background noises were completely gone.  It was a different way to spend a week.

The ENT had a special ear vacuum thingy that got all of the wax out, so I went into her office not able to hear and exited half an hour later with the problem solved.  I get the joy of a monthly Debrox soak and a follow up visit in six months to make sure that everything is OK.

Morals of the story: if your doctor tells you that you have an earwax build up and makes an offhand comment about an ENT, do not let that thread of the conversation drop.  Do not believe Dr ChatGPT that the problem will go away on its own in a few days.  I'll take the blame for the q-tip and peroxide use, but I kind of wonder if my ears still would have clogged on the first use of Debrox.

Good things about losing your hearing for a few days: my sleep was excellent!  And I really appreciated it when it came back.  Background noises sound very loud now.

That's my "really stupid thing that happened last week story".  What have you got to top it?

  1. omg my ears just retain wax-- something about the shape of the canal? Anyway, I usually get them cleaned out when I get a check up. But! The first time I noticed a problem was on my honeymoon (after flying and then being in the ocean), and I had to visit the resort doctor to get them cleaned out (for the first time). AND THE RESORT DOCTOR? Was, like, soap opera hot. It was a terrible way to spend time with my brand new husband (he held a basin under my ear and caught the wax baby).

    1. This makes me giggle. A hot doc and your hot brand new husband...and ear wax. Hey that's what marriage is about - catching the other person's ear wax in the basin.

  2. I have a friend who also has a lot of earwax buildup, over and over, and she was actually told to clean it with this thingy that looks like a corkscrew plastic ear q-tip. Hold on, let me see if I can find it. It's this https://amzn.to/3MJ76ua and she says that it works really well! So now I wonder, am I being really stupid, because I still clean my ears out with q-tips! Help!

I get swim ear, and always have, and usually a bit of rubbing alcohol and a bit of jumping around does the trick! Again, maybe this is not proper anymore but it is what I usually do!

    1. If you've never had to get your ears flushed out by a doc then whatever you are doing is working!

  3. So how RELIEVED did you feel when the vacuum finally plopped out the earwax? I imagine it felt miraculous!
That no-hearing week + excellent sleep combo...maybe you’ve accidentally cracked the code? Could it be that your "normal ears" pick up every tiny background noise, like pipes, heaters, Doggo, snoring hubby, and suddenly total silence lets your brain actually switch off?

And I fully agree with you, messy and muddy hiking beats no hiking ANY day!

    1. It wasn't that dramatic of a feeling. All I know is that when she finished I could hear again, and that was miraculous!

  4. You know what, until you mentioned it I had never heard of the peroxide/ Q tip in the ears. I didn't know that was a thing and then I didn't know that we weren't supposed to do it. I just didn't know! When Jake had ear wax buildup, I think we had to drip like olive oil into his ear to soften the wax before he got it blown out by the doctor's office. He was quite young and I could not BELIEVE what came out of his ear. Like, how did he hear anything? Anyway, glad you can hear again but also glad you had a good sleep!

  5. Dang the ear wax thing is so odd. My house is so loud so not being able to hear for 5 days would not be the worst thing... LOL. But I am glad you went the ENT route and got the issue dealt with!

  6. I hate things going in my ears so have literally NEVER used a Q-tip in my ears a single time (but my husband does). I remember the doctor saying "nothing bigger than an elbow" in your ear. In other words, don't put anything in there - haha. My Dad has always struggled with wax buildup and my mom used to pull it out WITH A BOBBY PIN. In addition to being gross, I cannot imagine how dangerous that was for puncturing an eardrum.
Anyhoo. I am so glad it's all sorted, you can hear, and now you know the right protocol if there is a "next" time.

    1. Okay, but I feel like people who say don't put things in your ears don't have ear wax that literally drips out of your ears. It's SO GROSS. I need to get it out of my ear before that happens. After I shower, the ear wax gets warm and it is literally POURING out. You better believe I take a Q-tip to prevent it from dripping out. (Maybe this is TMI in someone else's comment section. Oh, well. Birchie, feel free to delete my grossness if need be.)

    2. Listen, we all need to do what we need to do to manage our ear wax, which until last week was nothing for me. Elisabeth, I know your mom is a nurse and your dad still has his hearing so it all worked out.

I have to giggle at the "nothing bigger than an elbow"...if you can imagine this, Doggo uses her feet to clean her ears.

  7. My husband has a very narrow ear canal and his earwax buildup is insane. He has to do the drops regularly. I bought him this gizmo that you can put in your ears to see what's going on in there and (a digital otoscope) he uses it to see if he needs to go to the doctor to have them flush it out. They basically waterboard his ear and a GIANT ball of wax comes out. But then he has water in his ears for a week. It sounds TERRIBLE.

ANYWAY. Is there a way for you to block out noise at night so you can continue to sleep better? Earplugs that are safe for sleeping or something? Because wouldn't it be great if you could sleep that great forever?

    1. Ear plugs don't work for me, and in chatting with the ENT, air pod type headphones are not recommended for long periods of time b/c they can push wax into the ear. Which is probably how I ended up in this situation since I listen to meditation podcasts to help with sleep.

  8. I've never heard of peroxide in one's ears. I know that my doctor actually YELLED at me for using peroxide on a big patch of road rash once after I took a hard fall. She said to NEVER EVER USE PEROXIDE ON SKIN, PERIOD. It is too harsh and can harm the skin. I promptly threw out the bottle I had.

Earplugs are tough for me. I hate not being able to hear if something happens in the night, and I find them uncomfortable. They sort of hurt my neck in an odd way, like inside?

    1. A lot of earplugs don't work for me. I don't mind not being able to hear when I'm home with the dog and Hubs, but I would not want it when I'm traveling.

  9. Oh man! I am so glad that your hearing loss was temporary! And thank you for sharing your story. As a fix-it-myself kind of person, it’s a good reminder that some things are best left to the experts.

    Here’s to a hearing, hiking, good-food, joy-filled week!

  10. I've never seen Mona Lisa Smile either. Interesting. I was today year's old (to coin my fav Birchie phrase) when I learned that Costco sells cheap and yummy frozen broc.

OK, the ear wax thing is crazy. Mini goes deaf from time to time and we figured out years ago that it's wax buildup and that there's nothing she can do, but go to the ENT quarterly to get her ears vacuumed out. I have videos of her in that chair taken on the sly, because she's so damn tickling. She has to wear earplanes or something when she flies. She bought a vacuum for her ears and uses it herself vs going to the ENT all the damn time. But we notice when she's going deaf that she needs to get them cleaned out. I'm glad you can hear again.

    1. The Costco broc alone justifies our membership. We go through that stuff like crazy. Just spray it with a little oil and seasoned salt and run it through the air fryer and it is divine.

I really hope that the wax is a one time thing but it is good to know that there is a home "ear vac".

  11. Yay for happy endings, and delicious breakfasts.

I laughed at ‘I assumed this rule was for other people’ and the fact that you slept SO WELL for the week with diminished hearing. Sad but relatable.

I don’t have an issue with ear wax build up, I don’t think. I mean, I hear fine and my doctor has never said anything about it. Perhaps someday it will just magically become a problem, like it did for you? My husband almost lost his hearing recently, it was sudden and unnerving. Cause turned out to be allergies. ALLERGIES. Such BS, those stupid allergies! In treating the allergies he dried out his eyes somehow and has had vision problems for over 2 months now (slowly getting better, but GAH!)

    1. Eek poor Ted! I know all about allergy treatments leading to dry eyes. A long time ago I started taking Claritin and miraculously my dry eye went away...for a few months when it came back with a vengeance. Turns out that the Claritin took away the feedback that my eyes were dry so it did me no favors in the long run.

  12. I have been through the earwax ordeal a few times over the years. I get it in one ear, but not the other. I should probably go get it checked out right now. But I HATE it so much!!!! I've always gone to my local clinic because my ENT said they weren't doing that anymore. Isn't that rude?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Very rude! I know that it's not technically difficult, but I'm glad that I saw the ENT and that I'll have a follow up with her in six months to check things out.

  13. The scramble sounds like a success! I have decided I am going to try tofu... and even bought a package, but haven't gotten the nerve to try it yet. I also got crunchwrap ingredients!

I have oddly clean ears. Doctors always remark on it and sometimes scold me, but I have never once put a qtip in my ear! I did have swimmer's ear once, in college, even though I have never been a swimmer. It was very unpleasant - lots of dizziness - and earned me a night in the university infirmary and a pregnancy test (any symptom at all prompted a pregnancy test).

    1. Tofu can be frozen if you don't get to it in time. My favorite way to make it is to spitz it with oil and seasoned salt and then air fry it for a bit less than 20 minutes at 360, and then add it to a stir fry.

      Yay for oddly clean ears!

  14. Ear wax!!! I also have a problem with it, periodically. I found something on Amazon that works- It's like a tube that you put into your ear and you flush it out with water. I know, it sounds like something you shouldn't be doing yourself at home, but it's worked for me. I would link to it, but first of all you don't need it now that your ears are squeaky clean, and you also might not want to do it. I've also tried Debrox and peroxide- I just put a few drops of peroxide right into my ears, although I'm sure a doctor would tell me not to do that. Oh well. Earwax is SO annoying, and now you can appreciate what it's like to be hearing impaired (not fun, except for sleeping!)
Now I'm craving a tofu scramble. Maybe I'll make one for dinner.

  15. Birchie, I'm so sorry but I had to skip over the whole ear conversation and even reading the comments makes me squeamish. I'm fine with most bodily functions, but there's something about the ears that I can't do! (I can't even TYPE THE WORD, I'm fully ridiculous).

    At least Doggo is cute!

The tofu scramble was so good! It lasted for six servings and I really miss it now that it's gone. Gotta make more ASAP.

  17. I found your ear wax story so interesting, and I've never really given ears much thought. I've never ever put a Q-tip in my ear. When we were kids, if we had an earache, our mother would pour some warmed-up oil in our ears (not sure what kind of oil).
