Weekly Round Up: Snow and SANta

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, reads, and early retirement life.  In this week's edition the boys wrapped up the fall semester and came home, I made some beautiful shortbread cookies, Doggo played in the snow, and SANta came to town.

A Visit from SANta!

SANta came to town this week!  Doggo alerted me to the delivery and was very interested in the box.

My SANta was Stephany!

The haul was: a mug, salted caramel chocolates, hot cocoa, a dog toy, a notebook, and fun socks.

The mug features my early retirement spirit animal, the sloth, and says "today I will do absolutely nothing"

Doggo was very happy that she was included in on the loot.  The toy is a gingerbread stuffie with a squeaky ring.  I have a feeling that the toy will soon be a squeaky ring without the stuffie, but so far he's still intact.

Thanks Stephany!  Doggo says thank you as well and hi to Lila and Eloise.

Eats

For the past few years, my go-to shortbread recipe has been buying a box of Walker's shortbread and calling it good.  With age comes wisdom, and I've come to accept that just because I can make something from scratch, it doesn't mean that I should.

However, when I saw Kelly's brown sugar shortbread cookies, I was mesmerized by the design and decided that I wanted to give them a try.  She used cookie stamps for her designs, which I don't have and didn't feel like buying.  Shucks I don't need decorated cookies.

But I like decorated cookies, so I got inspired and used the plates from a cookie press to see what I could come up with.  I only made half of the recipe because I wasn't sure if I would like them.

This is the world's simplest recipe, and I liked the look of my amateur cookie stamping attempt.  I did question if it was really necessary to beat the butter and sugar together for five minutes, but since I am an evangelist for beating butter and sugar for most cookies for three minutes, I decided it wasn't that much longer and to suck it up and do it.  It wasn't that big of a deal.

It's all very well that they looked good but how did they taste?

Verdict: I deeply regret only making half of the recipe and will be making a full batch for our Christmas cookie tray.  In related news, Walker's sales are forecasted to decrease by approximately two boxes per year.

Workouts

Last week I got my flu, COVID, and shingles vaccines on Monday.  I felt pretty sick on Tuesday, and fine with just the ghost of a sore arm from the shingles shot by Wednesday.  It feels good to have that chore off the list!

My tailbone is still sore from the dog walking fall two weeks ago (!), so strength work is still on hold.  30 minutes on the treadmill most days, and of course all of the dog walks.

From earlier in the week when it was just normal cold with a dusting of snow:

On Saturday we took our after dinner walk in the afternoon right before the big storm and before it got super cold:

The temperature now is officially As Cold as Balls, so we've had to pare our walks down to half a block plus snow zoomies in the yard until it gets warmer.

Watching

I finished season two of The Gilded Age and it was everything I could have dreamed of.  I'm taking a few weeks off to savor it and then I'll tear into season three.

Reading

It's been a slow week.  I finally finished Guilty by Definition.  It was...well, very slow.  The Sarah's Bookshelves crew loved it.

Early Retirement Life

I have a feeling that I will soon be calling this section just "life".  I spent the week at home locked into math and Spanish in the mornings and taking care of adulting in the afternoons.

Math - um it's a bit boring and there was one lesson that I didn't quite get.  I'm sticking with it for now but I have a feeling that this may be a short lived pursuit.

Spanish - I will finish the first unit of Pimsleur next week, and then it will be time to add in something else to the mix (Spanish TV shows, Youtube videos, maybe some more written exercises?)  As to how it's going, I'm good at hanging in with the lessons, and TBD if my studies lead to ever being able to understand or converse in Spanish.

Social:
  • I went to my book club's holiday lunch, where we did a book exchange.  The only thing is that I never buy books so I didn't have anything to exchange.  To get around this, I made the rounds of the Little Free Libraries in my town and kept upgrading my pick as I went along.  In the end I selected Daisy Jones and the Six as my give book, which is a book that I want to read but haven't yet.  The book that I got in the exchange is a memoir called Unbound: A Story of Snow and Self Discovery by Steph Jagger.  When I'm done with it, I will give it back to the Little Free Library to even the score.
  • I went to my local Chose FI group!  For the civilians in the crowd, Chose FI is a podcast that money nerds like me tend to listen to, and they have local groups around the country and around the world.  It was a fun meetup with like minded people and I'm looking forward to the next meeting.
Family - the boys are home for the holidays!  Hubs and I made the six hour round trip to pick up Stepson #2 on Friday.

What's Next?

It's going to be wicked cold next week, so I'm going to a place where the temperature is closer to my age.

I had been working on a post about my most recent trip, but I found myself getting bored.  These trips are fun, but for whatever reason they just don't feel worthy of dedicated posts.  But there are a few choice tidbits that would be fun to share, and of course everyone loves to play Rate the Airbnb.  After pondering it a bit, I think I might do periodic travel roundup posts to share the highlights of these shorter trips.  Stay tuned!

Peace Out!  How cold is it where you live and how much snow have you gotten?  Has anyone read Unbound?

  1. It was terribly cold here this weekend with highs around 5F on Saturday. I think we got up to 10F yesterday, so twice as warm but I felt no difference. On Saturday we were walking back to the car after the zoo and Taco wouldn't walk because he was 'TOOOOOO COLD!' He weighs too much for me to carry him and he could not understand that the only solution was to start walking again! Gah. It was not fun but that outing was otherwise great.

We gave probably gotten over a foot of snow but I would say we have about 8" on the ground right now. It is going to be 40 this week (how can the weather change SO MUCH!!) so we'll lose a good amount. But we might get more this week. I am here for more snow, especially since it takes a lot of snow to cancel or delay school.

I love that you are doing some math lessons, even if you abandon the project. I didn't take any math classes my first semester of college because I had enough math credits from a college course I took in HS and I thought I was going to be a clinical lab scientist. Well, then I hated chemistry with a passion and found myself helping people in my dorm with their algebra homework and really MISSING math so then I changed my degree to math and never looked back.

    1. The difference between 5 and 10 degrees is not twice a warm, no matter what the math says! Brrrr!

  2. Snowy snoot!
It's been super mild here, which is great but also feels un-seasonal. However I shall not complain!
Those cookies look fantastic. I have been slowly making Christmas treats instead of my usual flood of baking, and it's kind of nice to run out of something before making the next thing!
What a great Secret Santa gift!
The Gilded Age!!! You have much to look forward to!

    1. Correct, don't complain because you'll soon have the seasonal stuff and a phone full of snowy snoot pictures.

I cannot wait to see season 3...I can only imagine.

  3. I am not typically a big shortbread fan but those cookies look buttery as heck. And the designs really did turn out great! Love your sweet Doggo and how fun that Stephany was your secret SANta!

    1. The cookies were awesome. I liked that they weren't too thick.

  4. If I got stranded on an island and had nothing else to eat than shortbread, I'd be perfectly happy. I absolutely LOVE shortbread!! And yours look amazing! I've never heard of cookie stamps but it's a great idea. The only reason why I will not use Kelly's recipe is because I would eat them all right after they come out the oven.
And Walker's doesn't need to worry: I will personally compensate for the two boxes they’ve lost. Happy to do my part.

Spanish does sound like it has some staying power! I like that you’re already thinking about what comes next. A future Mexico (or similar) trip would be an excellent way to give the whole thing some bite - nothing sharpens motivation like a real-world reason to use what you’re learning.

    1. I'm glad to know that Walker's will not be out of business! The empty nest was all very well, but now that the boys are back at home I can bake whatever I want and not have to worry about being able to eat too much,

  5. It is SO cold right now. BUT, the kids have school today after a 4-day weekend.

I never make shortbread (even though I love it) but these I can get behind! The recipe does not seem finicky at all, and I have some cookie stamps!!! Stay tuned, will report back.

What an awesome SANta gift! I didn't participate this year, but I have been loving all the reveals in bloggyland <3

    1. If you have cookie stamps, you MUST make the shortbread. Someone will eat it!

  6. WHAT HAVE I BEEN TRYING TO TELL YOU- stop with that math immediately!!!! There are a zillion other ways to spend your precious time.
I also made shortbread cookies yesterday- they had dried cranberries and orange zest in them. Hmm, I should have taken a photo! I didn't taste them but the family said they were good. I just looked at the recipe you used- maybe I'll try them! I'm intrigued with the idea of stamping them. Shortbread is easy to vegan-ize because there are no eggs.
It's going to be 80 degrees here this week and I'm a little cranky about it. I mean it's almost CHRISTMAS, I'd like it to be a little cooler. Whatever. I'm a wimp so I'd rather have this than snow.

    1. This is what happens to people who don't listen to Jenny - they end up studying math!

I'm in your state this week, but in the north. It won't be anywhere near 80, but it's a ton warmer than home.

  7. I love a good shortbread, but I like mine thick, like Walker's. Can I just roll Kelly's into a log and slice them off to bake, do you think? I like the idea of making some with orange zest and a teensy bit of clove.

Rick and I live for costume dramas, and The Gilded Age had everything we love, including Christine Baranski. She should work far more often than she does.

The New York Times has a newsletter entirely devoted to baking. I read it and pretend that I'll one day make some of the stuff I see in it. Cranberry lemon bars? Yes! Mexican hot chocolate cookies? Absolutely.

    Probably not gonna happen.

    1. I will be the first to admit that anything I read in the NYT food section is most likely to be aspirational.

Shortbread is shortbread, so I'm sure you could use Kelly's recipe and take a look at the baking time in a thicker shortbread recipe and make the shortbread of your dreams. I'm looking forward to Christmas baking next week!

  8. Your shortbread cookies are so pretty! Your secret SANta gift was amazing! And how sweet of Stephany to include Doggo. I'm here for any travel posts you want to write, and I LOVE rate the Air B & B. I also love Show Me the Rotunda. OK, I love anything you write about!

  9. Hahaha, yeah I'm with Jenny above- there ain't no way I'm spending my retirement doing math, just sayin'! I'll let you and Lisa have fun with that. 😅

I love the Doggo snow pics!! So pretty. Thank goodness the temps have warmed up now this week a bit because that bitter cold is ROUGH. And that sloth mug is so perfect for a new retiree!! ;)

  10. I just want to say that Doggo is absolutely gorgeous. I cannot get over how good looking that dog is. It turns out that I now think shepherds are the prettiest dogs.

It has been bitter cold here, but yesterday we had a high of 30 and it's already in the 30s today. I suspect all that snow is going to melt just in time for a brown Christmas!

What a fabulous gift from Stephany! She really understood the assignment. I also really like how we're all really serious about labelling everything Secret SANta with the correct capitalization. San has so much power over us!

    1. We can't get over how good looking Doggo is either! She is very sweet, but she also knows that she's cute and can get away with a lot of things because of it. She is (obviously) a dog, but because she's small and has the pointy ears and a long tail she is very cat like as well. Shepherds FTW!

Stephany understood the assignment and hells yah it's SANta. No one is confused about that.

  11. Maysie just did her first snow zoomies the other day! Now, she just wants to go be in the snow all day every day, which I understand but cannot accommodate haha! Those cookies look AMAZING - I am going to try and convince my daughter that they should join our test roster for this year....

    1. SNOW ZOOMIES 4 LIFE!!! I don't mind winter nearly as much when I see the joy that it brings the doggies. If it was up to Doggo, she would spend the entire day outside. Like you, I don't have the capacity to be a full time door watcher to let her in.

  12. It was SO MUCH FUN to shop for you. I especially love when I get a partner who has animals because I MUST buy something for the animals!! I'm glad Doggo is enjoying her squeaker. :)

I have never once been tempted by shortbread, but your cookies are making me reconsider my stance. They look delish!
