Weekly Round Up: Fireworks and a Snowman
A weekly round up: early retirement life, eats, workouts, watches, and reads. This week I lived my best early retirement life and went on a four day road trip, there were fireworks, and Doggo encountered a giant snowman.
Early Retirement Life
I was thrown off my game a bit by the Cold from Hell, which was my main focus for the last half of November. Now that it's pretty much hit the road, I hit the road. I got another notch in my state capitol quest (story coming soon). I'm weighing the weather right now, but I will most likely go somewhere warm next week and then hunker down for the holidays.
My self learning quest is unfolding as planned.
I finished this year's continuing education for my CPA license before Thanksgiving, and I'll quickly step back into it right after the new year to get next year's credits out of the way.
I'm 100% for doing at least one DuoLingo and one Pimsleur Spanish lesson each weekday, including during travel. It's recommended to do the lessons every single day, but I decided to go with weekdays to start and bump it up later if I want to. I'm a big fan of doing a lot of things most days, but the only thing that I want to do every single day of my life is to brush my teeth. Once I finish the first unit of Pimsleur, I'll look to add in things like YouTube Spanish videos, Spanish TV shows, and maybe a simple grammar book since my learning methods don't involve a lot of writing.
Oh yes I did it! I know that Jenny was terribly concerned about my plans to study remedial math, but I moved forward and picked The University of Waterloo's grade 7 and 8 remedial math class as my starting point. The first lessons are about integers and real numbers, and it's exactly like being back in real math class and asking, "when am I ever going to use this?". Hey, at least I understand the concepts at this early stage!
[It's OK Jenny! Friends let friends know when they could be making better use of their time]
I finished my deep clean and declutter of the upstairs of the house (specifically my section of our room, my office, and the two bathrooms - everything else belongs to other people who can deep clean their own spaces if they want to. The decluttering was helpful, but otherwise 2/10 don't really recommend. I'll continue the quest downstairs and in a few sections of the basement after the kids go back to school.
We got snow right before Thanksgiving, and even if we hadn't done the DNA test I think we would know that Doggo is 25% Husky. Or more accurately she is 0% Husky for 75% of the year and 100% Husky in winter. Girlfriend is here for the snow and spends long sessions with her belly on the ground playing with her frozen tennis ball.
Food
Nothing amazing to report. I really like Recipe Rebel's creamy Italian sausage pasta this time of year. It's easy to make, the colors are seasonal, and it tastes very fancy. Just note that there is a typo in the recipe and where it says "2 and one half cups of broth" that really means 2 cups of broth and half a cup of white wine;-)
Hubs and I had a night out at one of our favorite local restaurants last weekend, and we just happened to be leaving at the same time that our city Christmas fireworks show started. We've heard it but never seen it before.
Workouts
Lol, this is going to be more of a wellness section. When I say that I'm retired I don't mean that I'm old, but my body is having a moment.
The pulled muscle in my chest is 90% better and coughing and sneezing are no longer painful. That was my cue to slip on ice while walking the dog last Monday and do something awful to my tailbone. One week and one day later it's much better, but still not 100%.
It was time for my annual COVID and flu shots, and c/o of my latest birthday I was also eligible for the shingles vax. I've known a lot of people who have had the shingles, and it is high on my Do Not Want list. But I also know from Hubs's experience that the side effects of the vax are fairly heinous, so I kept forgetting to schedule it because there was never a time when I was like "sure, I have nothing else going on for the next few days so I will volunteer to feel awful."
I was pondering all of this yesterday and realized that I didn't want to get my shots this weekend because the boys are coming home and didn't want to get my shots next week because I want to take a trip, and I also didn't want to wait until closer to the holiday because I'll be hanging out with a lot of people so I want to give the ol' immune system a head start. That's when it clicked that right now was the time. I headed out to the drug store and got 'er done. If anyone wants to know, when you're doing the triple poke they recommend getting the COVID and flu shots in the same arm and the shingles shot in a different arm. Since I'm left handed I picked that arm for the devils that I know and my right for the newbie.
Verdict: Of course I feel not great 24 hours later and both arms hurt equally, but it feels less awful than my first two COVID shots. Triple dip FTW! I'll report back on how the second shingles shot goes when I get it in a few months.
Anyway, this is all temporary stuff that will clear up sooner or later. I'm back to doing very simple cardio on the treadmill. I'm pausing all strength work until my pulled muscle, arms, and tailbone are back to 100%. It was fairly easy to get the 3x/week body weight strength routine going so I'm not worried about being able to get back to it (and maybe seeing some progress???) once everything stops hurting.
Watching
If you want to be taken seriously, you need serious hair! Aw yiss, I saw Working Girl while I was on my trip. Apart from some 80's relationship and sex stuff that hasn't aged well, it's a cute movie and I enjoyed it.
Hubs and I have been on the lookout for another Hot Couples TV show, and we finally settled on Severance. We've only seen the first episode so far, but we liked it.
I finished The Correspondent on audio on my trip, and it ended up being a 😻😻😻. As a reminder, when I tried to read the book it was a DNF, and as soon as I listened to the audio it clicked with me. The ending made made me cry and there was a moment of tension since I only had four kleenex in the car, but thankfully it was a "two hankie" cry.
Then I read a really good book that I wish I hadn't read. Do you know what I mean? The writing was flawless and the characters came to life, but it was about unpleasant stuff. If you are in the market for something like this, Dominion by Addie E. Citchens is your book.
Currently: I'm reading Guilty by Definition by Susie Dent, which I only know about from the Sarah's Bookshelves podcast. It's a mystery set in the world of Oxford linguistics, and the only reason that I am reading it is because of the author. I know her better from 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, which makes up a sizable portion of the YouTube viewing in my house. So far I like the author a lot more than the book, but I'm sticking with it.
i hope you have fun with the math! Junior high math has some great concepts. And integers are important! Populations (can't use fractions for that- I hope) , inventory, measurements ..so many examples!
Your poor tailbone! Be careful out there! Also, I'm glad Rex is a dog without access to weather information in other places because if he did, he'd be jealous. We have NO snow at all! I personally love math and I think that class sounds very fun and kind of soothing.
I told Doggo not to share our pix on the Cool Bloggers Doggers Network so Rex won't know anything. In return I haven't told her about the mountains in BC so that she doesn't know about all of the rock climbing that she's missing out on.
Good for you for setting reasonable expectations for retirement. Ouch on the fall, but I am glad your triple shot wasn't too bed. At least now you are prepared to be well while traveling. I'm excited to see where you go!
Oh, maybe I should take remedial math too??? That seems like a good idea, and 7th and 8th grade were the last grades where I did really well. After that it all went to hell.
I love Doggo in the snow, she’s so happy! And wow, I love the sky all lit up with that firework. Excellent.
Working Girl - ‘Does big Jack want to see little Kate?’ LOL! (Paraphrasing, I don’t remember exactly…)
Math went to hell from day 1 for me, and I wasn't sure where to start but middle school seemed like a good shot. I think the class will cover what I'm missing? TBD!
Nice work knocking out the CPA credits and actually signing up for the math thing, Birchie! Doesn't Duolingo freak out if you miss a day? I always get the mob boss treatment if the morning passes and I haven't done a lesson yet. Now I find myself protecting my streak like it’s a fragile ecosystem.
On the fireworks front: have you seen those insane Chinese drone shows? The choreography is incredible! What I especially like about them is that they don't pollute the environment as much as traditional fireworks: no physical debris, less smoke, less chemicals in the air, less noise for pets and wildlife to deal with and less fire risk.
DL yells at me for skipping but it keeps giving me streak freezes. I try to ignore the gamification stuff.
BRB I'm going to see what the internets can tell me about the Chinese drone shows. All of the advantages that you list are good, but the most relevant one for me is not scaring pets.
There is so much to love about this post! I just adore your writing -- you are so funny and chill.
First of all, the tailbone injury on top of coughing recovery sounds super frustrating. I borked my back last week and still am not back to weight lifting so I am in the gentle treadmill walks boat, too. We're going somewhere but very slowly.
Hahaha - "the only thing that I want to do every single day of my life is to brush my teeth." That cracked me up.
I am so impressed you are really doing the remedial math!!! This makes me want to follow in your footsteps... but the math dread from middle and high school is still too strong. Maybe in a few years.
I am SO RELIEVED AND DELIGHTED that you ended up enjoying The Correspondent. Such a great audiobook!!!!!!
Severance is definitely a hot couples show! I still haven't made it through the second season for some reason, but it's a good watch.
I did not know Harrison Ford was in Working Girl! I have never seen that movie but it's now on my list of Movies I Missed in the 1900s That I Should Watch If Only for Cultural Awareness. Right up there with When Harry Met Sally.
My takeaway is that we need to have a Cool Bloggers WHMS Watch Party.
If you haven't already, you have got to send the post that you wrote that was a letter to Virginia Evans to her! I know that she would love it.
Look, if I have to have a run of consecutive weeks where my body isn't quite right at least it's now in the winter and not when the weather is good. But still....
I kind of want to join you on the Spanish learning activities. I feel rusty and right now the only time I am practicing is with my neighbor, and I'd like to be able to speak more fluidly.
I spent a lot of time doing big cleaning and organizing projects when I first retired. I was highly energized and it felt satisfying. Of course, it was also summertime, and then I could go out on the patio with a book and an icy drink.
I'm so sorry about your mishap and resulting tailbone injury. Ugh. You're wise to take it easy; that pain is no joke.
The whole Math Thing escapes me. I used to have to stand up at my desk in elementary school to do math because I found it so frustrating and intense. All math after that is a blur. I have no desire to revisit any of it. More math for you!
Did you have any aftereffects at all from the shingles shot? I did not, even after the second one. No matter--anything is better than shingles!
I had aftereffects from one or more of the three shots that I had on Monday, but it's hard to say which one. Both arms hurt and I felt ill, but it wasn't too bad and I can't say that it was worse than my first two COVID shots. Stand by for my 2nd Shingles shot in 3 months and we'll know more since it will be the only shot that I'm getting that day. Both shots really did a number on the Hubs when he got them.
I did very poorly in math in school, and when I took the GMAT to get into grad school my scores were in the 20th percentile. What inspired me is a Youtuber who did a remedial math class and went from being shaky to solid in maths. So this is an experiment to see what happens.
Dominion sounds Lisa coded. It was one of the books I suggested for our 2026 book club reads but Culpability won. I will still read my 3 picks (Dominion, Mercy, Culpability - all recommended by SBL or From the Front Porch which is another excellent book podcast with a real life Kathleen Kelly a la You've Got Mail owner).
That snowman is impressive! We have so much snow right now. There is probably 1' on the ground? We got around 6" yesterday and more will come tomorrow. And then the high on saturday will be -1F. Yes MINUS ONE DEGREE! SOB.
Dominion was well written and had a story that moved, so I think you will like it. I've heard a lot about Culpability but wasn't sold on it so I did my favorite thing for books that I know I'm not going to read, which is to listen to the SBL spoiler episode.
I keep debating whether I have room in my life for another book podcast. I get so much out of SBL.
Woof on the snow! It's 40 today and then it's going to get colder again, but we've been pretty good at staying in the 20s at least. Stay strong Minnesota!
What a tough start to retirement. The only place to go now is UP! I pulled something with a horrible cough one year and the pain was unreal. I would never have believed a persistent cough could bring about debilitating pain...until it happened to me. LOVE the snowman.
That’s a bummer that you’ve been slowed down by illness and injury but you’ve still done quite a bit. Good news is there’s no rush. Retirement will still be here next year. I’ll have to check out the correspondent it’s getting so many rave reviews. It sounds like something I would enjoy.
I did not know about the math project! Super interesting! I got shingles as a 22 year old. (It was unpleasant.) I wonder if I still need the vaccine . . .
I look forward to reading the correspondent, but I need to get a copy of the book club book for January because I like to give myself enough time to get it read. Title is Book club for Troublesome Women. I've not heard anything about it but the title makes me giggle. I cringe at the thought of taking a remedial math class for junior high ages. Better you than me. ;) I'm glad you just went ahead and got the shingles vaccine. Box checked!
Am I the only one who sort of thinks Susie Dent is boring? I want to like her, but I think she's just overwhelmed by the actual funny people on 8oo10c.
Birchie, you're turning into me with all of your injuries! Enough already! ;) I hope your tailbone isn't too bruised.
I am so impressed that you're learning math! I feel like I could use a good remedial geometry lesson. I'm still not sure how I pass that class in high school!
The Correspondent! I finished it yesterday and it was SO GOOD.
As you know, it's no fun. But everything will clear up...eventually? The vax hangover is long gone, but I have the ghost of the rib strain and the tailbone is still not happy. Grrr...
Well, you've been throught the wringer! Dang!! Wishing you all good things moving forward. I got the Shingles vaccines a couple of years ago. The first one was fine, but the second one was something else! However, I've also known people who had Shingles, and the vaccine was nothing in comparison. Oh, Birchie, taking remedial math would give me nightmares! Ha! Ha! But I'm so happy that you're enjoying it! My husband would enjoy a math class too. Whenever I need anything math-related, I ask him, and he's delighted to help.

At least you traveled this week so hopefully the math didn't come with you. Shingles is also high on my Do Not Want list, and like you, I also can't seem to find a time to schedule it where I can afford to take a "down" day. I really need to get that done- if I get shingles I will be SO MAD at myself for not getting the stupid shot. Nice job getting that done- I know you still need a second shot, but I have heard you're protected even after the first one. Can't wait to hear about your trip!
Between you and me, math has gotten very boring very quickly. I'm sticking with it for now but it is very likely to be a short term thing.
It takes a few hours to start feeling bad, so you *might* be able to get it right before you go to work, and then take the next day off to recover. My arm was still a little sore on the day after that, but the "being run over by a truck" feeling was gone. But even if you have to take an unpaid day off, it could save you from a lot of unpaid days off later (Hi, if anyone is listening this is a good example of why every job should have a few paid days off per year. Seriously.)
Yes you were out of it last week because you had a bittersweet week. Your final days with Ms. Charlotte <3
Ugh, the dreaded shots! Both the Covid & Shingles vaxes did numbers on me. We’re talking full-blown body aches everywhere & major brain fog. I was a mess for almost two days, LOL.
The brain fog was real with my first two COVID shots! After that it got better. There's no way to know, but I think that the "I got just run over by a truck" feeling that I had last week was from the shingles shot. Oh well, it's in the rearview mirror now!

The Correspondent was oh so good. I couldn't believe how well it worked on audio (and understand why it didn't work for me in print). Enjoy!
DeleteWinter is a slower time anyway, so if I had to hurt myself, now is the ideal time.
I did not know about the math project! Super interesting! I got shingles as a 22 year old. (It was unpleasant.) I wonder if I still need the vaccine . . .

ReplyDeleteEh the further I get into it the book might be on the boring side. Susie has gotten her share of barbs at Jimmy, so in my mind she holds her own.

ReplyDeleteOh no! Your poor tailbone. Gah, that takes so long to heal from 😔
I do know what you mean with books like Dominion. The great writing makes it even harder to forget the horrible stuff.
I knew that you would get me. I need the author to write about anything except religion in the deep south for her next book.
