Weekly Sweats: A Seinfeld Week

 


Fitness wise, this was a "Seinfeld" week: a week about nothing.  29.25 miles and more baby steps toward weight workouts went by, so if you're down for some running chit chat, lace up and we'll go out for a quick run around the block.

Monday: 4.25 miles and on paper the conditions looked good.  In reality things were sticky, nasty, and pretty tough going.  I got in a fair amount of body weight work throughout the day, so I'm crawling back in that department (I am in the middle of a hissy fit on strength training right now.  I just wanna run except I know good and well from past experience that strength work is part of what makes running possible...except I don't want to do it.  So bear with me as I continue to work through this).

Tuesday: group run day!  Five of us met at the house of the person who lives the furthest out.  Turns out that said friend has a pool and no one turned her down when she invited us to take a dip afterwards.  The moral of the story is that it is good to have friends with pools and so wonderful/odd that I suddenly have a social life that takes place before 7AM on weekdays.  3 miles with the group and 2 more once I got home.

Wednesday: a planned rest day, so I didn't set my alarm and slept in until 7:30.  I settled in with my coffee for a bit, thinking that I would take a brief walk before work.  Except that all of a sudden I had a burst of energy and knew that a walk wasn't going to cut it.  So running clothes went on and 3.5 miles went down.  How that works is that I planned to run 3, and I usually do an extra quarter mile as a sneaky way to bump my mileage up AND I also wasn't paying attention at the end so when I checked in a few minutes after the 3 mile beep I was already at 3.4 miles I kept on to make an even half.  Sleeping in and spontaneously going for a run and still being on time for work falls in the category of Things That Were Not Possible Before the Pandemic (lemons==>lemonade).

Thursday: was a mighty fine day.  2 miles warm up/cool down with 4 x 400/400 recover in the middle.  Last week I crawled through this workout and this week I hit my paces with ease, and I have no explanation for either event.  6.25 miles total.  My end goal with this workout is to run a sub 9 minute mile but Strava alerted me that I also ran my 2nd fastest 400 so I think that needs to be a goal as well for next time.

Friday: a simple 4.25 miles, body weight stuff throughout the day.  My legs got so tired after two miles, which makes sense since I was on a 5 day running streak...oh wait a minute there's another explanation.  Remember those Brooks Glycerin that I got at the beginning of the summer?  I'd set them aside for a while and recently started wearing them a few times a week for the shorter runs, and wowza, they really do make my legs feel tired compared to my normal Brooks Launch.  I'm intrigued by this (a.k.a. for whatever reason I never got around to returning them) and plan to keep on using them for short stuff but I won't use them 3 times in one week as I did this week.

Saturday: an exercise in procrastination.  It was just a little too warm and I just couldn't get my head around the treadmill.  The weather looked better for Sunday so I kicked my feet up and took a rest day.

Sunday: oops, more procrastination and I was very late getting out the door for my planned 8 miler.  I've made a lot of progress with warm weather running, but at the end of the day there is only so much that salt tabs and cooling gaiters and rest breaks can do.  I got pretty dizzy after 5 miles so I headed home and called it at the 6 mile mark. Better weather is in store for next week and I will take it.

  1. yeah the 6-7am social life is crazy pants! Way to go on your Wednesday! Hope you're recovered from the dizziness. Sometimes it's just time to stop

  2. I love that burst of energy that you described! That often happens to me on a morning I tell myself I can sleep in. It's like my body is saying "haha, nope get up" lol.

  3. Jumping in the pool after a hot run is the best! Sometimes a low key week is good :)

  4. It's definitely nice to be able to run longer/later and still be on time for work! It's supposed to be a little cooler here this week too and I am very excited about it.

  5. And now you know why I have a strength coach--I can guarantee you that I wouldn't do strength work on my own! It's worth the $$ to keep me strong.

  6. Haha! I had to laugh at your hissy fit because that's me, every day. I know how good strength training is for me, but I'd much rather be running. If you find a challenge that works or motivates you, please let me know so I can jump on that bandwagon!

  7. I used to love getting so much done before most people were even out of bed. it was such a great feeling. The heat can really get you down. Stay safe out there.

  8. Your run on Sunday, perhaps you were dehydrated and that is why you felt dizzy?

    If I remember correctly the Glycerin are more cushioned but yet slight heavier than the Launch. Maybe an ounce or two?

    1. I think it's something about sunlight that affects me. I'd had a nuun, a salt stick, and plenty of water...or it just wasn't my day and that's fine. I can't tell if the Glycerin are heavier but they are more cushioned and for some reason I really feel it in my legs.

    1. Ha ha no b/c that was the dizzy run. I'm obsessed with finishing each run on the even mile/quarter mile/whatever but the weekly total is what it is.

  10. I've definitely felt dizzy after a hot run...hopefully more frequent pool dips will help. A very solid week of training for you! It's hard to make time for strength training- schedule it on your phone and set up a timer and make it a priority (even though I'd much rather run too, haha!)

  11. I tell ya, meeting up with friends for bootcamp is the only thing that would get me out of bed pre-dawn before work to do strength training! Otherwise I would just skip it, and go for a run. ;)

  13. I love your title "A Seinfeld Week" - that often describes a number of my weeks :)

    Interesting that the Glycerins make your legs feel tired - do you think it's the extra cushioning they have?

  15. LOL on the pre 7 AM social life!

    I'm 62 years old and until the last few years, ran pretty much injury free through 40 marathons and I'm convinced it was because I focused on strength training to complement my running. So my advice to you is, "Do. Your. Strength. Training!" ;-)
