Friends, I got to run outside for the first time in five weeks today and I am so happy about it! 21.45 miles this week with one strength workout and a back owie. And oh yes I bought another pair of shoes, oh yes I did.
I'm linking up with the Weekly Run Down, please head over to Kim and Deborah to check it out.
Monday: strength and 4 easy treadmill miles.
Tuesday: 3.3 treadmill miles. Normally I'd be shooting for 5-6 but I couldn't get the gusto to do more and it came to my attention that something was not right with my lower back.
Wednesday: my back was hosed, so I passed on the weights. I found that sitting in my office chair was the most painful thing I could do. I also found that I was unable to pull up my standing desk converter so I got an assist from my husband. Normally I only stand for 30-60 minute stretches, but I found that standing up agreed with my back very much.
Thursday: off since my back wasn't 100%. After another day of almost entirely standing for the workday got things got a whole lot better.
Friday: Ready to get my toe back in the water with 4.3 treadmill miles, a whole lotta standing at work.
Saturday: back on the tready for 6.3 miles in single degree temps.
Sunday: it came to my attention that the temperature would be in the 30s later in the day, so I played the long con and delayed my run until the afternoon. 3.25 miles outside and yes it was odd to have to move my body instead of reacting to the treadmill belt, but it was so nice to be back out there. And don't think I'm throwing shade at the mill, it's all the nicer to have been able to keep up with my running for the past 5 weeks/121 miles.
What's Next
I am one workout away from finishing the 2nd phase of The New Rules of Lifting for Women. If I hadn't hurt my back I would have finished it this week and then taken next week off as prescribed by the plan so I'll sneak the last workout in sometime next week and call it good. Mileage wise I've kind of already had my cutback a week early, so I imagine I'll be doing something mid-20s for mileage.
I can't quite read the crystal ball that is Accuweather to see how the weather is going to play out next week. Temperature wise everything looks good but we also have more storms and a lotta snow to get melted so the roads could go either way safety wise. I quipped a few weeks ago that my fitness goals for February were to watch season 5 of Outlander (achieved) and season 9 of Call the Midwife, and I'm two episodes away so if I have to be inside for exactly two more workouts I'll be good with that;-)
More shoes??? Geez!!!
For context: I've bought between 2-4 pairs of shoes a year for the past few years and so far this year I've already bought 3 pairs of shoes: one pair returned, one pair kept, and now another pair purely for looks. As soon as I saw this year's Luckys I couldn't get that hundred dollar bill out of my wallet fast enough. If I'd known the Luckys were coming out this soon I'd have held off on trying the Launch 8, but as it is I can use the "boring" gray shoes for bad weather days and the "cute" shoes when the roads are dry.
They are beautiful! What a fun pair of shoes for motivation :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you got back outside this week!
Jess, it was soooo nice! I can't wait for more.
DeleteI saw those shoes and was very tempted! But I have too many shoes right now so I resisted. So glad you were able to get out for one of your runs this week. It feels so good to get out after being stuck inside most days.
ReplyDeleteI never have fun shoes so I runfess that I'm planning to snap up the special editions as they come out since I know this shoe works for me.
DeleteThose Luckys are the bomb-diggity. I wish my feet liked that model, because when I saw them featured I was ever so tempted to just get them anyways. Alas, I really need some new "distance" shoes (much more than I need the pretty ones), so I exercised great restraint. Getting back outside is SO liberating, isn't it? Almost like a prison sentence was pardoned....
ReplyDeleteYes, I never have pretty shoes so I'm pretty excited that the new model is working out. Hopefully they'll do some cool special editions for your distance shoes.
DeleteYay for running in the great outdoors! New shoes are always fun, and shoes with gold shamrocks? Extra fun! What kind of running shenanigans are you going to pull off in those?
ReplyDeleteShenanigans will be had that's for sure;-) There's no telling what I'll get up to once these are on my feet.
DeleteI love those shoes! Last year, I splurged on a pair of tropical themed Adrenalines just because. Sometimes you just have to buy the shoes!
ReplyDeleteI sure hope your back feels better!
Thanks Wendy! Fingers crossed and knock wood everything is well. Because the Launch 8 is such a good shoe for me I plan on splurging on the special editions.
DeleteGlad you were abl to get outside.
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are way cool. I bought NYC Brooks once even though I don't wear Brooks lol.
Hope there are more outdoors runs this week.
I got another outdoors run this morning and it was everything! C'mon weather, keep it up!!!
DeleteI love those lucky shoes! I wish I could wear the Launch, but if I'm going to pay the money, I really want shoes that work for my foot (I'm looking at you Dunkin Donuts Kinvara).
ReplyDeleteOh, your poor back! I hope it doesn't give you any more trouble!
Well yes...and thank you Brooks for making the special edition in "my" shoe. The back is doing well, but I'm making sure to spend plenty of time standing during the work day.
DeleteSo how do you like that book? I'd be curious to try it out. I always feel like I'm kind of faking it with my strength training.
ReplyDeleteLove the shoes!!! And glad your back is feeling better. Hope you can get outside again this week!
Big fan of the book so far. I feel like it's challenging but it doesn't take so much out of me that I can't run afterwards. With that said, I really feel like I need to get strength coaching tailored to my body and my abilities, so that's likely what I'll do when I'm finished with the book. Before I started this program I'd really let the strength training slide and I think that if I hadn't "changed my ways" that I would have been on the path to an injury.
DeleteI'm loving those shoes!! And, yea for getting outside! Hope the weather cooperates this week!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle! I cannot wait to be back outside for good.
DeleteOh man, those are really cute shoes! I have a credit from Running Warehouse so I should get them right? I haven't done a lot of running this month so the pair I am currently using will last a bit longer than the usual 3 months. Decisions, decisions.
ReplyDeleteAw man, I always say that I don't like to tell anyone else what to do...but I think you HAVE to get these shoes...you've worn the Launch before and you have a credit just sitting around....
Deletesorry to hear about your back!! hope you are feeling much better by now!
ReplyDeletethose shoes are definitely not my taste hahaha! so I'm going with beautiful ugly :D Never mind, if we all liked the same stuff it would be boring! Since I like InkNBurn I tend to have less flashy shoes. and I don't InB from top to bottom either - I like a bit of a splash to offset solid colors.
Thanks Renee! I'm totally back to normal but it was a reminder that fitness can be taken away at any time without warning. This time of year I wear an orange sweatshirt on most of my runs so I will definitely be stretching the beautiful part of beautifully ugly;-)
DeleteI am actually not too big of a fan of the Luckys, but I like more muted colors in general LOL
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to run outside again!
