Weekly Eats: And Then I Quit

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition we winged it for meals, I had a breakfast disappointment, I started listening to a podcast called "And Then I Quit", on the job front I had two misses and an unexpected hit...and then I quit!!!!!

Breakfasts

Friends, sometimes things that sound wonderful on the internet are less so IRL.  Exhibit A (pictured above): pesto toast.  Three great tastes that do not taste great together.

Lunches

The highlight of the week was the day after we had Chipotle for dinner.  I've been getting the quessadillas lately, which come with three sides.  I've been getting rice, pinto beans, and black beans for my sides.  I've found that one service of rice + half a serving of beans + roasted sweet potatoes that I always have in the freezer plus cheese and salsa makes a good meal.  All that's missing is some avocado.

Dinners

A total wing it thanks to my work schedule. Hubs made a very good spaghetti with meat sauce one night, a mac n' cheese night, a fend-for-yourself night and then we went out for the rest of the week.

Watching

Hubs wanted to do a tribute to his father for Father's Day.  My FIL was in the navy and was a huge fan of musicals, so the clear answer was South Pacific.

Solid music, great story but ouch that Emile doesn't tell Nellie that he has children...that really doesn't translate to present times.

Reading

I haven't started my next book yet, so in lieu of that let me tell you about my latest podcast obsession.  I came across this article which led me to this podcast.

It's everything...so snarky, so juicy...this show makes me so happy.

My job search update is: two misses, one hit, and one quit!!!!!

- The company that I had been interviewing with for over a month contacted me on Tuesday to ask if I could meet with them on Thursday.  I was puzzled since surely if the answer was no they would have said so?  But also my experience has been that once a company decides to hire you they usually don't wait two days to tell you...so what the what.

Fun fact: yes a company will totally schedule a mystery meeting with you two days in advance to tell you that you didn't get the job.  I thought I had seen it all but this was a new one on me.

- My dream job interview also sent a reject the same day.  Fun fact that just because an interview goes over-the-top well does not mean that it will translate to a job offer.  Even if the hiring manager has the same Garmin as you.  Though props to them for just sending an email instead of scheduling a meeting for two days out.

- And then out of nowhere my former boss texted me to ask how my job search was going and I bet you can guess why he was asking!!!  I adored this boss and when I found out that several other people we used to work with are at this new startup my only question was "when can I start?"

The actual quitting was an anti-climax.  I wasn't even the first person in my department to quit today and it's not a large department.  I gave 'em three weeks, which is enough time to finish up the big project and then train folks.

I'm still adjusting to not spending hours on end on LinkedIn and Glassdoor.  The next thing you know I'll be cooking meals for my family and reading books and doing endless frivolous stuff with my newly found spare time.

  1. Wow, last week must have felt like a rollercoaster ride!

The Garmin magic unfortunately didn't work but HEY! What a turn of events with the startup and your former boss. That sounds like a win-win. I'm so happy for you!!

The podcast must have been very inspirational for your quitting process (btw thanks for the link to that article). In Switzerland, our quitting period is usually 3 months - I've even had 6 months. 3 weeks sounds amazing to me!

Enjoy the feeling - looking forward to seeing all your new cooking creations and book recommendations.

    1. Oh wow, I cannot imagine a 3-6 month exit process. I'll be available for questions from my soon-to-be-ex-employer but gah I am not wasting any more of my life on these people. We've had a few fairly high ups just plain walk out with no notice.

  2. Congrats on the new job and closure (well, in three weeks) of the other. That has got to be a huge burden lifted from your shoulders. Onward!!

  3. What a week! Glad you found a new job. Congrats.

I was in between jobs a few years ago for 12 weeks. It was so weird to be able to do what I wanted any time of day. Unfortunately it was stressful because I was looking for a job the whole time. Then I got 2 offers on the same day and started right away.

    1. Job searching is such a roller coaster. I was "between jobs" for most of 2009, though I did a lot of temp work so there were only about 6 weeks where I didn't work at all. But it was exactly like you say, I couldn't enjoy my time off or do anything fun because I had to keep looking for a job. For every job change since then I've had to do the "closet job search" where I was constantly running outside or to the bathroom to take calls and having endless "doctor's appointments" to go on interviews. Remote job searching was so much easier. I could be on LinkedIn all day without anyone seeing and could just block off my calendar for interviews without anyone knowing.

  4. Yay! That's great news! Although I'm a little disappointed that you didn't quit in a dramatic, flamboyant way- but glad you're out of that awful job. Can't wait to hear about the frivolous things you do in your spare time now!

    1. Ha ha I still have two weeks so there's still time for me to do something dramatic. But seriously...I just don't care about these people enough to get upset anymore.

  6. Congratulations! 🎉👏 I am so glad you will finally Work again for someone you can trust and respect vs. your now ex-boss, in that stressful environment. I'm sure it's such a relief!

Enjoy your free time without looking for jobs! 😄 Do you have to start there immediately after the 3 weeks or can you take a little vacation in between?
