Let's Catch Up: Books Lately

I've been having the best luck with books lately.  Here's what I've read since my last weekly post.

Vacation Reading

When we go to the beach, the books come out!  From under the shade of our beach umbrella:

The first book that I read was Persons Unknown and the last was Remain Silent, both by Susie Steiner.  The 2nd and 3rd books in a British detective series (I talked about book 1 here).  Thumbs up, and I was surprised/pleased that all of the books in this series were readily available at the library for Kindle.

God Spare the Girls by Kelsey McKinney is a brand new 2021 book that's gotten rave reviews.  I came away a bit less enthusiastic on this one.  Five stars for the two main characters, five stars for some of the points raised, fewer stars for the overall story (yes it was realistic but yes I finished the last page and said "that's it?") and I also caught a bit of a YA feel.

Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna was my #1 vacay read.  I only went looking for this because I wanted a little more space between the two Susie Steiner books and went looking in my Kindle history.  I'd read the second book in the series a few years ago and the third book is coming out next year.

Post Vacation Reading

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys is a New Orleans 1950's story, thumbs up.

Currently reading (and very much liking) The Last Girl by Jane Casey which is another Brit Mystery.

What have you been reading lately???

  1. I read part of a magazine today! Something I could actually hold in my hands & turn the pages :-) Granted, it wasn’t an actual book...but it involved ZERO screen time. I’d forgotten how nice it was to be unplugged from technology...

  2. Your reads sound great! It's nice when you hit it right with the vacation choices.
I don't know Susie Steiner's books yet, but it will be easy to remember the author because she has the same name as a friend of mine.
I would like to read “Beautiful Country” by Qian Julie Wang that Wendy recommended in August.

  3. Okay, my TBR list is dangerously out of control. I got bogged down re-reading the Harry Potter books this summer- not that I'm not enjoying them, but it's preventing me from reading anything else. i've also had less reading time so I've been reading book #6 for this entire month so far (Order of the Phoenix.) I keep saying I'm going to take a break before reading the next HP book, but somehow I end up going right into the next one. I really might take a break this time and check out the Susie Steiner books- sounds like something I would love. Thanks for posting!

    1. There's nothing wrong with a re-read. A while back I was in a groove of rereading an old favorite for every new book that I read. I'll read a book every few days on vacation but the rest of the time I'm only reading a chapter or two a night, so it can easily take a month to read a book.

The Susie Steiner books were good, and I was really surprised that I'd never heard to this author before. I only found out about them from the Mrs Modern Darcy ebook sale list.
