Weekly Round Up: I Can Explain

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  This week I tried out a few things in the kitchen and saw an incredible TV show.

Wait didn't you say you were going to start writing a Friday post?

Yeah, I said that and did not do that, but I can explain.  In theory I would like to check in here more than once a week, but in practice work leaves me completely drained and not in a good place by the end of the week.  The first prompt in the format that I was testing was "what was the high of your week?" which shut me down flat and that post never had a chance to get written.

I read something about writer's block recently that said that if you're having trouble writing something that one option is to take it as a hint and not write it.  I'm not sure that I agree with that 100%, but I also know that when I get a good idea it's almost impossible not to roll with it.  On the flip side when I get a post that doesn't take shape when I start writing it, the process becomes too much like work.

Whatever.  Give us some eats.

That I can do!

The NYT food section is hit or miss for me, but I came across a little not-quite-pasta-not-quite-stir-fry number that I wanted to try.  May I present mushroom pasta stir fry?

Right off the bat I only made half of the pasta, a bit more than half of the veggies, and all of the sauce and I feel that the proportions that I used were good.  If I make this again I wouldn't bother with broccolini (something that I have to go to the store for) and would use regular broccoli instead (something that I always have in the freezer).  Overall this was easy to make and I liked it.

For those keeping score of what foods Doggo likes, she loves broccoli and does not love broccolini.

On the dessert front, I felt that we needed to try these cheesecake cookies.  They were very easy to make and very good, but they also left me with a hankering for cheesecake, so if I had it to do over again I would have just made our go-to cheesecake bars.

Workouts

Some kind of cardio during the week, hiking on the weekend.  Nothing much more to say.

Watching

We're almost done with season 7 of Seinfeld.

In other news, oh man have I got a show for you!  Or a book depending on your POV.

I heard a recent episode of the Sarah's Bookshelves Podcast with Georgia Hunter.  She wrote a book called We Were the Lucky Ones, which is a fictional telling of her family's experience in the holocaust.  It's a book that I've been hearing about for years that I've never gotten around to reading.  The podcast was about Hunter's new book, and also about the process to adapt We Were the Lucky Ones for TV.

As I was listening to the episode, I kept thinking "Ok, why haven't I gotten around to reading this book" but those thoughts were soon replaced by "I need to drop everything and watch the TV show".  She got my attention when she said that the producers made the choice to use an all Jewish cast, and that there were challenges in trying to get the mix of American, European, and Israeli actors to all use the same generic Polish accent.  Oh hello, which Israeli actors?  In recent years I've seen quite a few Israeli TV shows, and they've invariably been quite good.  The thing about Israeli TV is that it's a small industry, so if you watch one show and then start a second, the chances are good that there will be a few actors in common between the two shows, so you're instantly in a world of familiar faces.

I immediately sat myself down in front of the TV, and sure enough the next eight hours of my life were spoken for.  It always feels wrong to use the word "enjoy" in the same sentence with the word "holocaust" but this was an incredible show that I couldn't get enough of.

The final thing that I have to say about TV is wow it feels weird to watch a show and not be on my phone or computer.  In recent years I'd pretty much stopped watching shows and was mostly watching Youtube videos.  Between Mo, Apple Cider Vinegar, and now We Were the Lucky Ones, I feel like the curse has been broken, but it feels strange to just watch TV and not do anything else.  When I'm watching Youtube the odds are strong that I'm on my phone or laptop at the same time.

Reading

I bet you can guess that as soon as I finished the show, I dived right into the book.  The book is good, but I almost wonder if I would have been able to get into it without the TV show, since it's a lot of characters that come at you all at once.

Peace Out!  Who's read/seen We Were the Lucky Ones?  Have you ever gone right from the movie to the book?  Or right from the book to the movie?

  1. Oh, this sounds great—thanks for the recommendation, Birchie!
Now, here’s the thing: Kai grew up in Germany and had A LOT of WWII history in school. We’re talking enough to make him break out in a nervous sweat at the mere mention of a documentary. Do you think he'd still enjoy this one, or is it a bit too heavy? Also, what network is it on?

Can’t wait for you to finally kick work to the curb and we get to read all your Friday posts! 😅

    1. That's a hard question to answer for Kai. The story is set in Poland, so I don't know if that makes a difference. There were some points where I was completely swept away in the story of the family without the historical context, but other times when it really hit me how many people were affected in the holocaust and even made some connections to Israel today.

      It's on Hulu.

  2. This new show sounds intriguing Birchie - although I am typically averse to shows that make me cry. Am I going to cry a lot? I love that there is a book too - it’s pretty great to be able to extend the “enjoyment” (we need a better word) of a really great story across mediums!

That stir fry is right up my alley and your sauce ratio is even more up my alley. I am also on board with swapping broccoli for the broccolini. The latter can be so tough and so expensive. Doggo gets it.

I’m sorry to hear work is so soul crushing lately. Hoping there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

    1. I made it through the show with just a few tears and a nose blow. Your mileage may vary. All I can really say is that it was worth it to me.

  3. I'm laughing at a couple things here. First of all, "I Can Explain" was the title of my blog post when I had to announce that I DNF'd my race last year. And, about your hesitation to say you "enjoyed" a show about the holocaust... the other night I was trying to think of what to make for dinner (again, obviously) and I asked my daughter what is her favorite dinner that I make. She said, "That's kind of like asking what's your favorite part of the holocaust?" Ouch. Also, lol.
I think everyone will join me in hoping you are able to realize your dreams of retiring soon, so we can get more blog posts from you!!!

    1. Oops! Sorry for the title steal. And OUCH on the dinner comment. That's some serious KidSnark.

  4. Whereas I would LOVE two Birchy posts a week, I get it - the end of the week can be super tiring! I'll take it whenever you post it, is what I'm saying.

  5. Book to movie but never the other way around. Interesting question. I read the recipe for the cheesecake cookies and can understand why you'll do the bars the next time. I've never gotten in the habit of watching TV while on my phone. When I focus I'm all there I guess.

    1. I think that when I do both the book and the movie the reason is that I want to stay with the story for a bit longer. You are smart to not have gotten in the habit of being on your phone all of the time.

  6. Ugh. I hate that work is still draining you so much...Blergh.
I LOVE cheesecake and don't think I've ever heard of cheesecake cookies. I'm intrigued...
If I'm watching TV (or videos in general - like YouTube), I'm just watching the video. I am basically never watching/on my phone.
Books are almost always so much better than the video versions. The most recent was All The Light We Cannot See. I LOVED the book and felt rather Meh about the series (it was good, but not nearly as good as the book).

    1. Sometimes it's hard for me to go from the book to a TV series because I feel like the story gets stretched out to fill a TV time slot. A good example is The Handmaid's Tale. It's such a short, efficiently written book, and the TV series has so many seasons. I couldn't stand how much they bloated up the story.

  7. I loved that book so very much and found the episode about the making of the series incredibly intriguing! So I do plan to watch it but it won't be up Phil's alley so I need to find time to watch it when he isn't around... which is really not often at all. I also want to read her latest book.

That pasta looks so good! Mushrooms is one of the few foods that Phil will not eat so I try to always order something with mushrooms when dining out!

    1. I am so in love with the story - in both it's TV and book versions. I also can't wait to read her new book, though there is a LONG wait time on Libby.

  8. We Were the Lucky Ones was one of my FAVORITE books. It's on my Favorites shelf, even though I don't think I will ever reread it. But it's one I'm happy to hand out to friends to read because it's such a great story, even crazier that it's TRUE. I have thought about watching the miniseries but I don't know if I can handle the heaviness right now.

I hope you're able to do TGIF posts at some point. Sometimes it is HARD to find a high, I get it. I hope things improve soon. <3

    1. I recommend the series! It deals with heavy stuff but the vibe that I got was more about the characters and the family, so there was a lot of joy. And spoiler, you know how it ends so I think that will tilt things more toward joy than sadness. So far I've found a few details that are different between the book and the show, but nothing major.

  9. I do not do TGIF. I just do five things. And that works for me because I just write it throughout the week. If I just write a short paragraph EACH DAY about ONE THING (good or not), then I have the things. But then I am writing every day and I can do it in five minute bursts here and there, but I think some people need chunks of time to write.

Cheesecake...that seems like it could easily be made gluten free. Why have I never made it?!

    1. I am definitely "some people". Writing is hard! Just having to come up with a specific number of things is intimidating.

  10. Oh, thanks for the TV rec, I will look for it. We just finished a show that was fun, "Platonic", and "Severed" recently ended too. And "The Bachelor". And "White Lotus" ends on Sunday, but then we will have a new season of "The Last of Us" to look forward to...

    1. I have quite a list of HBO shows to watch, and I'm just waiting for Last of Us to come out. Then I'll do that and White Lotus. Have you seen The Pitt? That's also on my HBO list.
