A weekly round up: a weather report, eats, workouts, watches, and reads. Greetings from the other side of my trip to New Orleans! I'll get the bloggy blog caught up on that soon, and in the meantime here is all the everyday stuff that we need to chat about.
We are in the midst of Snowmaggedon, and Doggo is here for it. When we came home from our lunchtime walk, she had the choice of walking up the plowed driveway or walking in belly deep snow in the yard, and she made her choice.
A Weather Report
Sigh, one week ago I was walking around in this:
And then I came home and started walking in this:
Then it got even colder and we had our big snow blitz so hiking is off the table until things clear up. Oh well.
Eats
Nothing new to report, just another round of our regulars. Chicken burgers, crunch wraps, and cheeseburger soup. I didn't take any new pictures of the finished products, but here is Doggo keeping an eye on the goods on burger night.
Workouts
The only interesting thing to report is that I've started doing bodyweight strength again. I was on a good path of doing it regularly, but then I got sick in November and got myself a rib injury from coughing. That put the kibosh on all upper body and ab work, and my lower body work was just squats and lunges, so it hardly felt worthwhile to keep doing those.
Last week I finally decided that even though I can't do upper body that I was ready to do some lower body if I could find something more interesting than the same old stale sets of squats and lunges. Hey wait, didn't I read a blog post about that...oh yes, Kae asked ChatGPT to create strength workouts and she liked what it came up with.
So I "asked Kae's trainer" to give me a 20 minute no equipment lower body strength workout, and here is what it came up with [not including the warm up and cool down so that everything fits into one screen shot].
Anyways, AI is much better at creating workouts that I am, and I like this little routine. Then I realized that I could ask it to give me an upper body workout that accommodates a rib injury, and sure enough it did. It's not nearly as good, but also it doesn't hurt my sore spot.
Speaking of which, I think things might finally be healed up? I haven't felt any twinges for a few days, but I also don't want to try to test it with pushups or a plank because that's been a bad idea in the past. Ima stick to the simple rib friendly workout for the rest of the week and then see where things stand.
Watching
Sniff, I only have 10 more movies left in The Great Alfred Hitchcock Rewatch. Time does fly.
I had started watching season seven of Outlander after a very long hiatus, and I remembered enough to mostly make sense of what I was seeing, but there were some characters and plot points that I didn't remember, so I watched a 20 minute YouTube video that recapped all six previous seasons and...wow...when you just lay it all out there that quickly it's a lot. Those folks have done a lot of stuff in those six seasons.
Reading
Let's dish! Since we last talked:
- I finished Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks, which was a book club pick. Although all of the gross plague details and goings on in the 1660s sometimes got to be a bit much, I liked the main character, so I was happy enough to hang out with her. I definitely would not have guessed the ending.
- I also finished The Pelee Project: One Woman's Escape from Urban Madness by Jane Christmas. My entire reason for reading this book is that I went to Pelee Island a few years ago and I'm obsessed with all things islands. All I can say is that I wanted more. It was too much "escape from urban madness" and not enough island.
- I tried a couple of books that didn't take, and then I remembered my resolution to check out more Katherine Heiny, so I picked up Early Morning Riser. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. It's hard to explain what her books are about, but they're terrific. I'm almost done with it.
- My Libby hold for Heart the Lover came in, so that's going to be next. I can't wait to see what all the fuss is about.
- I was out hiking when I got the word that NICOLE'S BOOK IS OUT!!! Naturally I ordered my copy then and there on the trail. The last time that I heard about a hot book that sounded so good that I had to track it down in the middle of a hike was Crow Mary, so if that isn't a good sign I don't know what is. Hopefully it will come in in the next few days.
- Last but not least, I dropped a whopping 53 cents for the kindle version of The Age of Innocence for CBBC!

Ooh! I look forward to reading about your experience in New Orleans. I've been there...once in college...but shortly after Hurricane Katrina to do relief work. I'm curious what it's like now.
ReplyDeleteAnd look at you getting back to bodyweight! Way to take things slow and try to enjoy it!
No snow here...thankfully. It is NOT my thing. And I did Cliff Note a Shakespeare play in college that I didn't understand, but never tried YouTube (I think that might have been too new at the time). I am currently reading The Sweet Life by Suzanne Woods Fisher (a sweet summer novel) and finishing the audiobook of The Preacher's Wife by Kate Bowler (very interesting and enlightening).
Snow is great for dog zoomies, and that's about it. Smart people live in Arizona!
DeleteI think that you would love Nola, especially since it's in much better shape than the last time that you saw it.
YAY for getting back to strength training! You waited out until the rib drama has subsided and found a way back that doesn't hurt. Smart!
ReplyDeleteHaving a fresh, structured routine makes a big difference.
One thing I was wondering: do you think going to a class might help you keep the momentum once you’re fully healed? I struggle to stay consistent with strength workouts at home and I find that having external structure really helps.
Either way, it’s great to see strength back in the mix. Your future hiking legs will be very grateful!
Taking a class is a good idea. Between you and me, I could use more of a social life, so a strength class could be a good two birds/one stone solution. But I'm so used to just going into my basement to take care of my fitness needs and I'm reluctant to commit to anything just yet, especially since I'm going to be traveling so much. All of which is to say, not today but in a few months...maybe!
DeleteI love Dog's Belly as a snow measurement! We don't have an appropriate dog for our snowfall, but I am certain the cat would disappear if we dropped him in our snowfall.
ReplyDeleteExcellent approach to the bodyweight workout! Do you have a typical number of rounds/sets you aim for?
I just follow what the workout says for reps/sets. I've only done it 3 times at this point. I think that once I'm sure that my upper body is good to go that I'll probably "ask Kae's trainer" to make a set of full body workouts for me.
DeleteBoring people measure snow in feet and inches. You can measure your snow in Leos!
Yay for a workout that doesn't hurt. I've been aiming to do deep stretch workouts lately and it has felt SO good.
ReplyDeleteMy snow measurement today was the fact it was up past the door of my SUV. So much snow, Birchie. We always shovel out ourselves, but today we hired it out (for the first time in years) and it was worth every single penny!
I watched and loved Rebecca this week. So that's my two cents on all things Hitchcock :)
Woof, that's a lotta snow. Can I tell you the number of times that Hubs has told me that the snowblower was not working this fall? And the number of times that I teased him that if he got it fixed we would have no snow this winter? Well, I think you can guess that he never got it fixed.
DeleteWe haven't actually had much snow since last week. It's not up to Hannah's belly, but it definitely is up to her ankles. We're having SO MANY foot problems for the dog. It's so cold (real feels have not been above zero in a week) that she can't go out barepawed. But her boots are rubbing on her dewclaws and she DOES NOT want to wear them. So I taped her dewclaws down using vet tape, but she acts like the tape makes it impossible for her to put weight on her legs. It's the most pathetic thing in the world. I think I'm going to splurge and order those suspender boots from Canada Pooch that we'll only use five times a year (for the life of the dog, which who knows how long that will be). Okay, sorry about this dog paw tangent.
ReplyDeleteYear of Wonders. It was beautifully written, but I don't think I'm ever going to be up for a pandemic read.
I always hate it when it gets too cold to walk the dog. They ask for so little out of life, and it's bitterly unfair that our pups should ever have to have their walks cut short.
DeleteI've never tried to put boots on a dog, and I suspect that it would not go over well. We're just very careful to keep her walks no more than 5 minutes when it's this cold, and to go home ASAP if she shows any signs of discomfort. Plus she gets unlimited snow zoomies in the yard, but it's still not the same as a proper walk. With all of that said, I can tell that she's not getting enough exercise and that she's got a bit of cabin fever.
Winter tricked me too. Clear (well, muddy but ya know) trails I could run on that are now covered in snow (I assume, it's too cold to work out outside). WAH in unison! 😂
ReplyDeleteSo glad hearing you are on the mend! FINALLY! YAY!
I hated late Jan/early Feb so much when I was running. It was just impossible to be outside because of all the cold/snow/ice so I was stuck on the treadmill and it got so old. C'mon weather, clear up soon. You've got that Taco Bell Ultra to train for!
DeleteI suggested early morning riser for my book club and people hated it. Like they hated it. I felt so dumb. I didn't think it was hate-worthy, but to each his or her own. they all loved the book we just read, Book club for troublesome women, and I found it contrived. Laughing at a being that would choose the belly deep snow route. Again, to each his own. ;)
ReplyDeleteReally?????? I know, to each their own but seriously they hated it???????? I dunno about those folks. I finished it last night and loved it.
DeleteI have comments! But first, I was reading through the other ones, and funny enough, I actually just started Book Club For Troublesome Women (see Ernie's comment above) and I am not minding it! Haha. To each their own. Of course, I have only read maybe 15 or 20 percent so far.
ReplyDeleteI am with Doggo! If I have a warm and dry place to go afterward, and a way to dry my clothes too, I will jump in the puddles and laugh in the rain and do snow angels like nobody is watching! I love playing around, but as an adult, often practicality trumps fun. Boo. Go Doggo go!
Hearing that people who loved Troublesome Women did not like Early Riser makes me not want to read it. Keep me posted!
DeleteDoggo and I have had some memorable hikes that have resulted in a dog bath immediately on arrival home. If I say the word "bath" she will go upstairs right into our shower. There have even been times when she's gone into the shower without me saying the word.
I'm just about to start Heart the Lover as well- we can compare notes!
ReplyDelete"Kae's trainer" did a good job! I can tell you right now I do the one leg sit to stands on a regular basis, and they are excellent. If you want to progress them (and your upper body allows) you can do them with your hands up in the air, and then eventually with your arms straight up and holding dumbbells. I've also added wall sits to my routine, and they are no joke.
No snow here! But we do have a "cold front" blowing through, and I'm happy about that.
Buddy read of Heart the Lover FTW! I really like the main character, but at 25% of the way through, I'm sick of the guys.
DeleteThanks for the tip, but it will be quite a while before I progress them! I can only do 2-3 right now.
I'm happy for your cold front. As I learned from my Tallahassee and Nola trips, a chilly day is a chilly day.
ReplyDeleteWe have snowmageddon here too and I was out snowshoeing yesterday despite the temps and it was really quite exhilarating. I haven't read Heart The Lover yet, but it's on my list. I recently read King's short stories: Five Tuesdays in Winter, which was good but I wasn't blown away, but it was my first King book and maybe I should not have started with a short story collection.
Short stories are tricky! I really like the main character of Heart, but the guys got really boring really quickly.
DeleteI hate winter with every fibre of my being, and this one is killing me. We have a foot of snow on the ground, I can't get outside and do even one little thing safely, and I feel like AAAARRRGGGHHHH.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I completely understand your pup wanting to cavort in the snow. My granddog Zydrunas bounds like a deer in it, then drags himself back in and collapses for hours.
Heart the Lover keeps showing up in my recommendations. I hate to be That Person, but honestly, I find the cover so off-putting. Anyway, I'm already reading something else, and CBBC is upcoming, so I'll be pulling The Age of Innocence off the shelf to reread. I hope the Club likes it; I love Wharton.
I'm looking forward to CBBC! I have read Wharton at some point in my life, but I don't remember any of the books, so this will be a fun refresher.
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with being That Person! Too many books, too little time.
It feels like the snow/extreme cold is going to last For.Freaking.Ever. Winter is a lot easier when I can go hiking (technically there is nothing stopping me except that no one is out on the trails so I'd be stepping through a foot of snow and...just no) or take longer dog walks. As it is we're getting through it with short but frequent walks. Booooo!!!!!
Heart the Lover just came in for me on Libby, so I’ll be reading along with you and Jenny, though I haven’t started yet.
ReplyDeleteI love that Doggo chose the deep snow! And that she takes herself for a shower! What a champ.
I’m so glad you are healed enough from your rib injury to gently add strength back in! That has to feel good.
Woo hoo triple buddy read! I mean we may not be reading at exactly the same time, but we're close.
DeleteThe photo of Doggo sitting in front of the burger patties is priceless! And what a gorgeous rug she gets to sit upon!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the rib injury is finally feeling better. That was a long haul for you.
She usually stands between me and the counter while I'm cooking. It's a bit of a challenge, but when you're that cute, you tend to get away with things.
DeleteI am reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks right now, and I LOVED Early Morning Riser, really liked Heart the Lover, and also ordered Nicole's book! I read the Jane Christmas thing as a series of newspaper articles and honestly, it was interesting but I rolled my eyes a bit at the whole "everything here is so pure and simple and my old life was so crap etc. etc." - but i would have loved hearing about the island.
ReplyDeleteA friend and i just made a pact to go to New Orleans. Can't wait to hear about your trip.
Bingo! The part where she lost me for good was went she went back to the mainland and went to the grocery store, and went on and on about how the staff was rude to her...and her examples were pretty slim. Like, these people are in the middle of their workday while you're running around like the Queen of Sheba.
DeleteYes to the pact to go to Nola! You will love it. Note to self, I better get writing that post.
Yay for being back on the strength training bandwagon and for getting some good recommendations for things you can do.
ReplyDeleteI read Standard Deviation based on bloggers recommendations and loved it but couldn’t get into Early Morning Riser. I did not hate it like Ernie’s book club just realized I’d rather read something else.
There is nothing wrong with deciding that a book is not for you. I guess if you forced me to chose, I liked Standard Deviation just a bit better.
DeleteThat is so much snow! I bet Doggo was in heaven, though. We did not get snow - instead we got epically cold weather and a decline in democracy. That was my line at the sales meeting I was at. It will warm to the 20s this weekend and then the 30s next week. It’s going to feel tropical. I didn’t get outside much in Vegas but sat on the patio for about 30 min yesterday and boy did that feel good!
ReplyDeleteWe don't get our warm up until Monday, and even then it's only getting into the 20s so we'll have the snow for a while. Bitter cold with no snow or democracy to show for it is rough stuff.
DeleteEverybody is getting so much snow. It's just cold and foggy here. I am glad Doggo loves the snow - not everybody does.
ReplyDeleteEverybody is asking AI for workout routines these days, huh! ;) I am glad it's working for you :) I am sorry about your rib, though.
That was me ;)
DeleteBreaking news: I was able to do a few pushups and a plank on Friday with no pain! Now for the slow ramp back up.
DeleteI am glad that Doggo loves the snow, too. It makes winter so much more bearable.
The snow is NOT up to any doggo's bellies over here! Shocking, huh? Although since my doggos are dachshunds, it wouldn't take much for the snow to be up to their bellies! Tehehe.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Early Morning Riser as my "phone Kindle" book, aka, what I read when I'm waiting somewhere and don't have a book on me. So it's slow-going, but I'm enjoying it a lot!
I will be reading Heart the Lover sometime in February, so I will be a lagging buddy reader. :)
Early Morning Riser is a perfect "read it for a few minutes and come back to it whenever" book! I'm at about 75% of the way through Heart the Lover but I need to get finish this week's reading for CBBC and I'm leaving on another trip tomorrow so it may take me a bit to finish.
