A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads. This week we celebrated Thanksgiving with an epic family get together, but you'll have to take my word for it because we had so much fun that we took zero pictures.
Thanksgiving Recap
On Thanksgiving we had a gathering of 12 people and three dogs at our house. The three dogs part is why there are no pictures, since we had to stay on our toes. Great fun was had by all.
The menu was our usual divide and conquer: Hubs cooked the turkey, SIL #3 made mashed potatoes and stuffing, SIL #4 made green bean casserole, veggies, and brought rolls, and I made gravy and desserts. I kept it simple and went with a chocolate chip cookie cake and apple pie.
Eats
It's fair to say that The Recipe Rebel is my current go to for eats. Our latest family dinner hit from there is cheeseburger soup. The first time that I made it, I decided to get all fancy and buy a block of cheese that I shredded, instead of buying shredded cheese. In theory that's supposed to be the superior way of doing things since pre-shredded cheese is mixed with something to keep the strands from sticking together so it's not "pure" cheese. In reality - if you gave me a bowl of soup made with not-pre-shredded cheese and a bowl made with pre-shredded cheese, would I be able to tell the difference? I'm guessing not, but still sometimes I get snooty and take the fancy/harder route.
In this case, the fancy route led to having an extra cup of cheese and an extra half pound of beef, with I bundled up in the freezer for the next time that we made this soup. As soon as we sat down to eat it, the family reached the mutual conclusion that "next time" would be the next night. So a second batch came together in a snap.
Workouts
The usual plus getting out for a hike on the weekends when I can. I got in a hike on Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving and had ambitions of more hikes over the holiday weekend, but the weather got brutally cold so I'll wait until it warms up again to go back out there.
Watching
Let me tell you that the weather has gotten chilly without telling you that the weather has gotten chilly - our TV watching has gone way up.
First up, a blast from the past. Hubs and I like to rewatch Seinfeld from time to time. Hubs is always the driver, and he'll pick some random show from, say, season 6, which we'll watch and then keep watching the next few episodes after that, and then we'll get distracted and it will be months/years before we'll get back to it and we pick up with another random episode in a different season. Well, since I can't find a decent TV show to save my life, I decided to break the matrix and start from the beginning during my solo TV time at night. I only made it into the second episode before my solo project became a couples project. Season one was very short so we've already finished it. If you're looking for trivia, Jerry had a different dad in season one and Elaine doesn't show up until episode two.
On the movie side of things, Unspooled did an episode on Office Space recently. My memory was that I didn't like it when I saw it back in the day because even back then it was a little too much like watching my average work day. However I was interested enough to give it another try after hearing the podcast, and I do appreciate a movie that's held up so well for 25 years(!)
Next up was one of those movies that I've been hearing about and meant to get around to sometime, and that time was now. Uncut Gems anyone? I had a lot of trouble getting into it, and I think I would have bailed except that I was watching it with the Hubs, which somehow made me stick with it a little longer than I would have otherwise. The story didn't do much for me, but I did enjoy/appreciate that Adam Sandler finally got a chance to act.
And finally...I bet you think I'm going to tell you that I watched some obscure movie from the 20s. Not true! I did see a movie from the 20's but it was the 2020's. I talked my SILs and nieces into seeing Wicked. My only beef is that the full title of the movie is Wicked: Part 1 and they really kept the part 1 thing under wraps. But it was a fun, splashy, bright, (long) outing with the fam, and there will be a repeat when part 2 comes out.
Reading
I have three books to tell you about.
Thing 1: Now that I've finished the Linda Castillo Amish Murders, I went back to the Alphabet series. I read F is for Fugitive. Spoiler, I've got the G book checked out and waiting on my Kindle for after I finish my current book.
Thing 2: I hear about way more books that I want to read than I have time to read, so a lot of things fall through the cracks. One of those books is The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. The only reason that it came to mind is because Julie wrote about it (thanks Julie!). I knew that it had something to do with a missing child, and I won't say any more than that. I will say how I felt - fully locked in and engaged from page one to the end. This was a book that made me smile and made me cry, and I don't think that there is any better compliment to give a book.
Thing 3: My current read is Madwoman by Chelsea Bieker, which is the current It Book of the Sarah's Bookshelf podcast. The author's "elevator pitch" for the book is:
"When my mom died, the coroner’s report said she died of “complications of alcoholism.” When I saw that, I remember something felt off to me, even though nearly her entire life was marked by addiction. I thought to myself, no, that could be truer: she died of complications of domestic violence"
Yep, that's how you get a reader's attention. I hesitated because my gut was telling me that she was absolutely going to nail the domestic violence thing. Now look, it's a problem that we as a society don't talk about enough, so the more well written books about the subject the better, but also there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I just read A Well Trained Wife, and I felt that I might need more of a break between DV books. But after I heard the author's Sarah's Bookshelves episode, I was all in and it only took a few weeks to come in on Libby.
My impression from 80% of the way in is that this is both an incredible book, and a funny one. I don't want to give away the story, but in addition to the advertised DV the story deals with a non-DV marriage and motherhood, and there are very charming and hilarious tones. The only gripe I have is that the further the story goes the "funny" part is getting a little too out there and I'm wondering what the ultimate message of the book is going to be. But so far I can tell you that it's a book with an incredible start and middle, and I'll circle back and let you know what I thought of the ending when I get there.
And Finally...
Tis the season! Hubs and I started the Advent Calendar again.
See you next week!
Is Madwoman a memoir or a novel? I'm not sure I'm up to it right now. What am I saying? I couldn't if I wanted to, I currently have eight library books at home, three are waiting for me to pick them up, and two are in transit to the library. So I have my work cut out for me.
ReplyDeleteI love Seinfeld - the first season is fun to watch because it is so different! And omg I love Office Space. My friend Hannah and I quote it to each other all the time. "I celebrate his whole collection." "Making my O face" "PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?" "It was a good name until I was twelve and that ass-clown started winning Grammys." ETCETERA. I haven't listened to Unspooled in a long time but maybe I'll give that a try.
I have a puzzle Advent calendar too! It's little individual puzzles though.
It's a novel, but inspired by life events. The author was trying to write about motherhood and kept coming back to how different her children's lives are compared to her own and BOOM the novel was born.
DeleteI believe in you Nicole! Those 11 books will go fast.
Okay, you've convinced me to read The Berry Pickers. Actually, I want to read almost every book Julie blogged about last month- they all sounded so good.
ReplyDeleteJerry had a different dad in season one? I guess it's been a long time since I've watched the early Seinfelds! I'm wondering if they're as funny as the later ones.
Arg- you've reminded me that I have TWO advent calendars that I've forgotten about- one for me and one for the cats. Well, I have a lot of doors to open tonight.
The Berry Pickers was a winner! Happy Advent Calendar catching-up! We're pretty good but not 100% at doing our puzzle each night so it's also fun when we have two sections to do to catch up. There's really no wrong way to do an advent calendar.
DeleteSomebody has a case of the Mondays!!! I love that movie. I was working at Nordstrom when I first watched it, so I was NOT working in an "office" but I still could relate so much... "I have three bosses!" Ug.
ReplyDeleteI read and loved the Berry Pickers. Actually I listened to it and I can tell you exactly where I was when I did (Banff) because I was so invested in it. I really enjoyed it.
I have seen episodes of Seinfeld here and there but could not tell you which season any of them were in, and probably have tons of episodes that I have not seen. I am not a huge TV watcher, but I DID go back and start Top Chef from season one and it is a different host, AND it was in San Francisco and I vaguely remember that time in my life as my brother had just gone to culinary school (in San Francisco) and he and his mates would watch the show and knew all the places etc. so I remember them talking about it, and I probably even watched one with them. Anyway, my point is that it is fun to go back and watch from the beginning.
I'm jealous that you got to hear Berry Pickers on the road. I wanted to go everywhere that the story was set (Maine, Boston, Nova Scotia, misc places in Canada...)
DeleteI would definitely watch more Top Chef. The only reason that I saw it is that they went to Wisconsin this year, so I watched it while I was in Wisconsin in some of the same places. I kind of want to see the season where the current host was a contestant.
We just rewatched all of Seinfeld last year. We were rewatching Frasier this year but ended up going back to GBBO. I love Frasier the best of all of them, then Parks and Rec, then The Office, and then Seinfeld. They are all such classic sitcoms.
ReplyDeleteSeinfeld 4Life! I don't watch a lot of other sitcoms, but there's just something about Seinfeld that really works.
DeleteSeinfeld is a classic and also one of my favorites to re-watch. A current show that I enjoy is Elsbeth. I also like So Help Me Todd, although Todd can get on my nerves. Marcia Gay Harden is great! Why do TV writers think that an annoying male character is so funny?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on Elsbeth. I'll check it out. Yeah, the annoying character thing is why I can't get in to a lot of sitcoms, whether it be male or female. Now granted all of the characters in Seinfeld are annoying, but it's a "good" annoying.
DeleteOh, geez....does Doggo ever seem relaxed? LOL She's too cute!
ReplyDeleteI put Berry Pickers on my library hold halfway through reading your post. I just watched/binged on Seinfeld last year (I never really watched TV before) but I didn't remember that Jerry had a different dad! See how observant I am! LOL Thanks for mentioning Office Space as I'm looking for other shows to watch.
I know why you didn't notice Dad #1. He was a much quieter character, so all that you saw was his mom when his parents were on. Dad #2 is a better match for the mom.
DeleteWhat a cute photo! Sounds like a wonderful and delicious Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI adore Seinfeld. I have been doing a rewatch for the past few years and it's so fun to re-encounter so many excellent episodes.
Very glad you enjoyed Berry Pickers so much -- maybe I need to pick it up again? I read about half of it and couldn't go on. But perhaps it was a case of wrong timing. I'm doing a reread (listen) of the Cormoran Strike novels and enjoying it, although Robin and Strike's inability to COMMUNICATE, omg, drives me nuts.
Look I adored the Berry Pickers but I feel that if it didn't reel you in then there is another book out there that needs to have your reading attention. There are so many fish in the sea!
DeleteI am so glad you had a fun Thanksgiving. Divide and conquer is the way to go!
ReplyDeleteWe have problems finding TV shows to watch too. Nothing holds our attention (or has one of our many other critiques). I am glad Seinfeld is doing it for you!
Props for getting through Uncut Gems. I tried to watch it a few years ago but it was giving me such anxiety!
I am glad you enjoyed Wicked! I am loling at the surprise of the Part 1 part because a podcast I listen to mentioned it so many times and how it was going to surprise people. I wouldn't have known if they hadn't mentioned it over and over and over.
Yay! Advent calendar time!
Yep, your podcast got it right! The part 1 thing was a surprise! Tho I don't hate that we'll get two family meetups out of it.
DeleteI would not have made it through Uncut Gems if I'd been watching on my own. For some reason it worked as a "couples" movie but it would not have worked as a solo movie for me.
Phil is a huge Seinfeld fan. When we were engaged and started to meet with wedding photographers, the first person we met made a Seinfeld joke and Phil was like - SOLD. We didn't meet with anyone else and booked her immediately because she got his sense of humor which is very important as Phil can be a bit, well, "prickly?" Last night we were paging through options and failing to find anything. I was ready to head up to bed in 10 minutes so Phil decided to just put on a Seinfeld episode. It's like comfort food for his soul.
ReplyDeleteI could not go to Wicked. I would need multiple bathroom breaks to get through a movie that is almost 3 hours! I have never seen the broadway musical, though, and I DNF'd the book it's based on. But those I know who've gone have loved it!
I almost picked Madwoman as one of my 3 picks for my 2025 book club but thought it might be too dark for some of our more sensitive readers. So instead I went with 3 non-fiction picks. I'm excited to check that book out, though. And I also loved The Berry Pickers. I loved her author interview and hearing about her relationship with her dad and how he's such a superfan and would come to her book events. It was so endearing!
I need to revisit the Berry Pickers episode. I listened to it and was intrigued, but I'm only reading the book now so I don't remember it.
DeleteSpoiler, Wicked is a movie that is well suited to bathroom breaks. I liked it, but there was a lot of repetition so you wouldn't have missed anything.
Seinfeld has been a good show to us over the years, and now we're getting the Complete Experience.
Oh, and we are dessert twins! A (GF) chocolate cookie cake is our go to for birthdays! It's such a perfect dessert!
ReplyDeleteChocolate chips cookies/cake is the only way that I get invited to our family parties!
DeleteSounds like a great Thanksgiving. We had a nice day too, hosted my my SIL. I brought as much food as possible as I felt like it was my turn to host, but she insisted. I loved Seinfeld - haven't watched it for ages. That might be a fun rewatch for Coach and I. We aren't really drawn to many shows right now. Sometimes I think it's because we heard of shows that people like, but then might not have the right streaming service. Ugh. I don't run or walk outside in freezing temps and I'm already missing it. I'll jump on the stationary bike instead on cardio days, but I'm hoping the severe cold will subside a bit in the next few weeks until January, maybe? That cheeseburger soup sounds delish. A request for back to back nights? That's quite the ringing endorsement.
ReplyDeleteHubs and I are really digging Seinfeld right now. We're almost at the end of season 2 - I feel like we'll watch it instead of movies so we'll probably get through it pretty quickly.
DeleteSigh. I love the pretty snow that we've gotten but we're over a week with a real feel of "unpleasant to be outside"...it's getting old.
I agree. It's been crazy cold here. I was bound and determined to get a run in today because it was supposed to get into the low 40s. Well, I did run, but the wind. I did not enjoy it, but at the same time - I did it!
DeleteHaha, one of the podcasts I listen to has been talking about the fact that Wicked is Part 1 for MONTHS. But the marketing hasn't talked about it at all! I am not a huge theater nerd so I haven't been sure if I want to see it. But it's getting so much buzz that now I'm feeling FOMO.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would have watched Wicked on my own, but I knew that I would like it with a group, so that's why I suggested it to the fam. I say go see it!
DeleteI am sort of sucked into the Wicked marketing myself. I LOVED the book. I haven't been to a movie theater since COVID, but I sort of want to see this one. Hmm. It's a weird urge. I'm sure it will pass soon enough and I'll end up never watching it.
ReplyDeleteI'm reserving judgment on Madwoman. I'm not sure I'm up for a book about domestic violence or ever will be. I listened to the author interview on Sarah's Bookshelves and I feel like that author and I are maybe not on the same page about what we want in our reading lives.
We're doing a puzzle advent calendar, too, and it's been so LOVELY to just sit for a few minutes every night and do it together.
How about a compromise? Go with the weird urge and see Wicked, and skip Madwoman! I ended up liking it with reservations about some clunkiness in the story, but since you used to work with DV survivors, I can see where a DV book is probably not going to be your cup of tea.
DeleteYay! I'm so glad that you enjoyed The Berry Pickers!
ReplyDeleteWe did a re-watch of Seinfeld somewhat recently...last year? The year before? It mostly holds up because they are all such idiots and live entirely in the ID. I met him when the show first came out, I worked at a big hotel in San Francisco and he was staying there while promoting it on some local TV talk show. I knew about it for 2 reasons...1. About a year before I met my husband, I briefly dated a stand-up comic and was tuned in to that world. 2. I had a subscription to TV Guide, and they had a piece about it. So he checked in to the hotel, and my coworker was chatting with him and had NO idea who he was, and asked him why he was in town, and I was all cool and snobby. "He's here promoting his new show, 'Seinfeld'."
Your Thanksgiving sounds wonderful, and I LOVE that picture of Doggo! She's adorable. For decades we were all about divide and conquer for Thanksgiving, but some family has moved away, some have died, some have aged out of being able to cook, so now it's kind of all on us. Which if we host (like this year) means it's all on me, because my husband is happy to help and is a good cook, but our kitchen is tiny. So I cooked, and he got the house ready (which is BIG) and our daughter set the table (which is not nothing, ironing and cleaning and so on) and helped clean. So I guess it was divide and conquer here too, actually.
Office Space was hilarious and painful when it came out, because it was SO CLOSE TO REALITY for me at the time (I'm not a programmer, but work in IT). Would be now too, I think, but since I work from home I am spared the worst of it.
We saw the musical Wicked when it came out here (before it went to Broadway even!) and LOVED it. I am NOT a musical person at all, so did not expect to love it, but it was great. I'm curious about the movie(s) and could easily be convinced to go see it, but am not curious enough to suggest it on my own.
I meant what I said - I had forgotten about the Berry Pickers and I wouldn't have read it if you hadn't reminded me. As you know, every page of that book was a shear delight - yes it made me cry a little but it was a delightful cry.
DeleteYou've got the scoop on Seinfield! You were there from the beginning!
