Weekly Round Up: Catch Up Edition

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads. Around here, we use the term "weekly" pretty loosely, so this post is to catch us up on everything that's happened since I got back from The Great Maritime Bender.

But First - Blog Admin

Two things to share:

1. I added a travel index page so that I have a one stop shop for my trips.  As of right now I only have the big trips listed, but I plan to fill in all of the "Let's Go Places" posts later on.  Don't worry, The Rust Belt Travel Guide isn't going anywhere, but my travel zone has expanded.  The RBTG is more of a long form guide specific to my part of the world and the travel index is a link list to everywhere.

2. I added the link to my postcard list over on the right.  This is a google form where you can provide me with your address if you would like to get in on my very irregular postcard mailings.  Sometimes they will just be from me, and sometimes they will be from me and bloggy friends depending on who I am hanging out with at the time.  The same terms and conditions apply (if you're already getting mail from me you don't need to sign up again, international addresses are welcome, if you don't comment but want a postcard that's completely fine, and you don't ever have to mail me anything in return).

Life Update 1 of 2 - I'm Almost Done With Werk!

My last day at work will be October 31st!  14 working days left to go!!!  On paper it's going to be here soon, but in reality I am not sure how I am going to get through the 14 days.  I have no regrets about leaving, that's for sure.  I've got a plan for money and how I plan to spend my days, which I'll write up soon.  On a related note, today is Indigenous Peoples Day, so it is my last paid werk holiday!  Woo hoo!

Life Update 2 of 2 - Doggo Is OK But She Gave Us a Scare

Toward the end of my Maritimes trip, Doggo came down with a case of "doggy belly".  The normal cure is a few days of a bland diet, which is generally plain boiled chicken and rice.  If that doesn't clear it up, a round of antibiotics plus the bland diet usually does the trick.  When that doesn't clear it up, the treatment is a few hundred dollars in x rays and blood tests.

All of which is to say that we've been through the ringer for the past two weeks.  Doggo would start to get better and then she would get sick again.  Then out of nowhere her symptoms cleared up and she's been back to normal for the past few days.  All of the testing came back negative for the Bad Things, so the current line of thinking is that her gut bacteria is off.  The current plan is to feed her a special gut biome food for the next month.

I will never take for granted that I am home during the day, that we live five minutes away from the vet, and that we have the budget for emergency vet visits.

Let's talk about normal round up things!

Eats

Meh, nothing notable since I got home.  Between work stress and Doggo my heart has not been in the kitchen.

Workouts

We finished the bike trail!

We had company for the last few miles of the ride.

The end of the bike trail just means that we'll be focusing our weekend time on fall hiking.  Next spring we'll find a new bike trail to work on.

In other fitness news, the Cool Bloggers Waling Club is underway.  Doggo is here to let everyone know that she is not a blogger but that she is a die hard member of the challenge.  She also said to let everyone know that while the goal is to walk for 10 minutes a day that life happens and that it's OK to miss a day or two if you have doggy belly.

Watching

We finally finished Seinfeld.  That is all.

I also finished season 1 of The Gilded Age.  I love this show so much that I'm only watching it on the treadmill to make it last.

I started a new movie watching project that I've been thinking about for a while, and it's going well.  I wrote up an intro post at some point during all of my Maritime recaps, and I'll reel that out soon.

Reading

Reading has been slower lately, but I've still got some good stuff to talk about.

I read Anne of Green Gables approximately one million times in middle school, but that was, ahem, quite a while ago.  I had the idea to reread it in preparation for my Maritimes trip, which turned out to be a brilliant idea if I do say so myself.  The writing is so good!  Her descriptions of PEI were dead on, even 100 years later.

There were some parts of the story that I remembered, but many more that I had forgotten.  One part that I had forgotten was the scene in school where Gilbert gets frustrated with Anne and grabs her braids and yells "Carrots!  Carrots!"  It was horrifying and yet...so funny.

After I finished Anne, I picked up the next book in the Alphabet Murders, which was O is for Outlaw.  For me it was one of the weaker entries in the series, and it felt like it took forever to read it.  Oh well.

I needed an extra audio book for the road during my trip, and Elisabeth's friend Joy was the hookup for Fawning: Why the Need to Please Makes Us Lose Ourselves—and How to Find Our Way Back. You've heard of flight, fight, or freeze as responses to danger, and there is also the forth f: fawning, which is people pleasing your way out of a bad situation.  I've had this conversation with a few folks off line, but I'm trying to find the balance between treating people well (one of my values that is not going to change) and not getting taken advantage of.  I'll circle back on this when I have more of a conclusion.  The book was really interesting.

My next reading move was one that Engie put on the cool kids' radar: I Who Have Never Known Men.  A young girl is living the only life that she has ever known, which is in a bunker with 39 other women with male guards keeping everyone in line.  One day the guards disappear, and the women venture out into the world.  I picked up shades of The Handmaid's Tale and 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it was just a hint of inspiration plus the author's original work.  If you would like a very short book that makes you think, this is for you.

Currently I'm reading two books.

  • The Joy Luck Club for CBBC.  I'm only reading the assigned portion each week, so I've got a bit to go.
  • American Dirt.  I was going to tell you that I picked it up after Elisabeth raved about it, but when I looked just now to get the link, I see that I got it wrong.  The book that Elisabeth raved about was Good Dirt, and I remembered the title wrong so I ended up with different dirt!  But it's a good book, so everything is working out.

Peace out!  Happy Fall y'all!

  1. There was a lot of drama about American Dirt - so google to find out more when you are done. The author of that book published another book and a book club friend raved about it - so this post is reminding me to add her sophomore novel to my TBR list in Libby.

I mean my cooking entry would be the same. I have barely cooked in the last several weeks. And I don't see that changing. We are receiving a sh*t ton of food from others. I am a little stressed about getting through what we have in our fridge right now... But having a lot of food to choose from/eat is not a bad problem to have.

I have walked every day except one so feel good about my walking club participation. And some days, like yesterday, I walk 4-6 miles so I feel like that should offset my lack of participation on 10/4. Which was a weekend day so I cannot tell you why I didn't walk or what we did, aside from sending my parents off back to their home after their visit (which involved them also filling our fridge/freezer with meals).

    1. Now that you mention it, I have heard something about a "Dirt" book. I'll check it out as soon as I finish it.

I get a lot of movement in general, but Doggo keeps me honest about walking everyday. Usually when I break for lunch and dinner she lets me know that she wants to go out, but there were two days in the past stretch where she kept napping through meal time so I figured she needed the rest.

  2. I love how you ended up reading about different dirt! That made me laugh! How exciting to have a definite end date for your job! I was slightly worried that they might string you along forever. You finished Seinfeld! I remember being so annoyed by the last episode when it originally aired (yes, I'm that old!) but then I watched it again years later and thought it was a fun way to wrap it all up.

    1. Admittedly it's me and not them - I am very susceptible to doing what other people want me to do. But yes, I'm just about out of there!

I liked the Seinfeld finale. They did a good job of bringing back a lot of old characters for the trial.

  3. Horary for almost done with work! And all done with bike trail! And getting ready for hiking adventures rather than biking adventures. I am glad that doggo is OK.

I have probably watched 10 or fewer episodes of Seinfeld. I wasn't sure it would hold up well to watching it now.

    1. It holds up! Even with dated references like speed dial and being sponge worthy;-)

  4. I'm cracking up that you read the wrong dirt. Oops. Poor Doggo. Poor you. I hope the gut issue is resolved soon. Hooray for almost being done with work. That's amazing. I'm coming off of a 3 day weekend, and tomorrow is gonna be hard, and I said tonight. I DON'T WANT TO BABYSIT ANYMORE. That's not a thing that might happen, but one day . . .

    1. Some day you will be free of work and have no contact with bodily fluids other than your own! It may not be today, but the day will come.

Doggo continues to do well, but we're going to put her on the special GI food for a month just to set her gut up for success. Deep in my heart I was sure she was going to be OK, but at the same time it was a little scary.

  5. YAY!!! You’ve made it, Birchie! Only this month to go and then you are FIRE!!! 🔥 I’m so happy for you — what an exciting new chapter ahead! No more werk emails, no more countdowns, just you time (and Doggo time, obviously).

Also, finishing that bike trail was the perfect finale before diving into your fall hiking season — the CBWC crew is clearly unstoppable, even when “doggy belly” strikes. 😂

I have a feeling you’ve already got a whole list of plans for your FIRE days — I’m really looking forward to that update!

    1. The best part is going to be having my money take care of me instead of me taking care of my money! I can't wait to make that first withdrawal! More details to come

  6. Poor Doggo. She does not deserve this episode. I know how I feel when I've got an iffy stomach and digestive issues. I hope she feels completely herself very soon. BONUS: she still looks terrific.

Congratulations on your imminent retirement. I'm thrilled for you to find all sorts of other less onerous things to fill your days. And they will fill up, I guarantee you.

When I watched the Seinfeld final episode upon its original airing, I was vastly irritated. I wanted it to be so much different and so much better. I liked that it brought back all the fun characters, but the ending seemed anticlimactic to me. Do I have a better one? No, I do not. Side note: I used to show the Chinese Restaurant episode to my Creative Writing students as an example of a One Act Play every year, and they loved it. (Maybe I already told you that? Sigh.)

    1. It's good to be a hooman. All that we have to do is to walk to the nearest bathroom and stay there as long as we want. We don't have to nose anyone in the middle of the night to take us outside.

I liked the Seinfeld ending. I mean sure they probably could have gone a different direction than sending them to jail, but I thought they did a nice job of bringing the favorites back to testify.

  7. I read American Dirt a while back and remember enjoying it and then there was a lot of controversy that followed. Fall (as in autumn, not tumbling) walking is my favourite type of walking and I'm looking forward to more long walks around my hood and a little further.

    1. I'm curious to see what the controversy was, but for right now I'm staying in my bubble until I finish the book. It's pretty good.

  8. I was sooo sad about how Seinfeld ended. It made sense but...I just always feel sad when a sitcom comes to an end. It's like an admission that it's not actually reality, if that makes sense.

    Yay for walking.

I've never read American Dirt, but have heard lots about it. I did love Good Dirt, though :)

Hope Doggo is feeling back to 100% soon.

And YOU ARE ALMOST TO THE END OF WORK. This is amazing, Birchie!!!!

    1. There's no downside to picking the wrong dirt - American Dirt is a pretty good book, and then I'll get to read Good Dirt!

  9. I’m glad to hear the doggo is feeling better! I can’t imagine how scary that was…yes, it’s a blessing you were able to get her the care she needed. Congrats on the upcoming job exodus! That’s got to be exciting!

    1. Thanks! It's always a little scary when our fur babies get sick, since they can't tell us what's wrong.

  10. I’m so glad Doggo is feeling better! So scary when they are sick, and you don’t know what is wrong.

I’m glad you enjoyed The Gilded Age! I really liked it as well.

I suspect Good Dirt and American Dirt are very different. I can’t remember if I ever read AD, but I know I read and loved GD. And I Who Have Never Known Men…what the hell was that, besides a REALLY good book? I still think about it. It did NOT go the direction I expected. I listened to it via Libby, and then had to go buy myself a physical copy.

  11. Whew, glad Doggo is feeling better and has signed up for Cool Blogger's Walking Club now that she's on the upswing. Yay for the end of work being in sight! That must feel.... utterly amazing. I can't imagine. Sigh.

I'll admit I sort of mixed up the dirt books too, though only in my mind. When Elisabeth mentioned Good Dirt, I thought, Oh, I've read that! But then I realized I had actually read AMERICAN Dirt, not Good Dirt. I enjoyed American Dirt, and have still not yet read Good Dirt, but it sounds like I'll have to make sure to read that, too.

  12. I love this catch up! Good for you for finishing the biking challenge -- that's such an accomplishment. And good for Doggo for so enthusiastically joining up with the CBWC!
