This post is the second installment on a topic that I never imagined that I would ever blog about: state flags. Today we're going to cross the border and take a look at the provincial flags.
How It Started
I am on a quest to spend at least one night in every state and provincial capital. Earlier this year I was starting to notice the different state flags when the Washington Post ran a story on the debate over the nipple on Virginia's state flag. I took this as a sign to drop everything and write a round up of the flags for the states that I had visited so far.
How It's Going
2025 was a boon year for Canada travel. I spent one or more nights in five provinces: British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Ontario. Since I'm at the halfway point of my Canada quest, it's time to review what we've seen so far plus drop a few facts about the Canadian flag.
Here are the flags from the provinces that I spent the night in so far, in order visited.
British Columbia
BC is the western most province in Canada, and their flag proudly claims their spot. Union Jack on top, since that's where we came from, and then the waves of the Pacific and the setting sun.
Nova Scotia
Nova = New
Scotia = Scotland

Prince Edward Island
I failed to get a good picture of the PEI flag on my travels, which is 100% on me. The flag is very prominently displayed all over the island. The best image that I have is the pins that they gave me when I visited the legislature.
Let's have Wikipedia fill the void:

The lion is a symbol of England, and this particular one is from the family crest of George Coles, who was the first premiere of PEI. The big tree is England, and the three little trees are the counties of PEI: Kings County, Queens County, and Prince County. The meaning is that the little acorns did not fall far from the big tree.
New Brunswick
Ontario
- Does the flag have a nipple?
- Was the flag noticeable when I visited?
- Is there something about the flag that makes me say "whoa"?
- Do I like the flag?
- British Columbia: c'mon, it's not even a competition. The BC flag depicts the province's location and importance in the country.
- Nova Scotia: it's a very close tie with the #3 spot, but the elegance of the design and the lawn ornament give New Scotland the edge.
- Prince Edward Island. Same comment as BC, the design says everything about PEI's origin. The independent spirit of this small island very nearly won it the #2 spot, but NS is just a little sleeker.
- Ontario. I kind of like the decision to adopt the "sloppy seconds" of the previous national flag.
- New Brunswick. Same comment as BC, the last place winner wasn't even a competition.
Bonus Round: Let's Talk About the Maple Leaf
What could there possibly be to say about Canada's flag? It's a big leaf.
Not so fast!
The US flag is a big deal because we decided that we didn't want to be under British rule and we had a revolution. Canada never did that, they just grew to be so big that the UK needed the Canadian colonies to unite and maintain a strong military presence so that they could deal with any trouble caused by their southern neighbor. The original flag of Canada was the British flag because they were one and the same. Take a look at this WWII recruiting poster that is on display in the Ontario legislature:
There were a few "unofficial" Canada flags over the years. The Red Ensign was the most prominent. You can tell it's Canada because of the maple leaves.
The "we're Britain but not really" method worked until the World Wars. Canada's military contribution needed to be recognized, and they needed a flag that was easily distinguishable from the British flag on the battlefield. Coming up with a new flag for a large country was a very politically charged topic, and it wasn't until the 60s that everyone was ready to get down to business and make it happen.
These photos are from a display at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec (within walking distance of downtown Ottawa).
School kids were asked to submit designs.
In 1965 the Big Maple Leaf was chosen. But there is a little more to it than that. There are 10 species of maple trees that are native to the area, which are represented in the carpet in the senate chamber. So the question is: which one of the 10 species is the Big Leaf?
If you answered all of the above, you are correct! The Big Leaf is a composite of the 10 species.

I realize I am HOPELESSLY biased, but my favourite is definitely the Nova Scotian flag. Agreed on NB being very blah. I know EXACTLY where that wooden flower with the Nova Scotian flag theme is from ;)
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love our Canadian flag. It's so pretty, love the pop of colour, and it perfectly represents our country. Very proud to have been born and raised in this country and to call it home.
It's not biased if it's true! I so enjoyed all of the time that I spent in your country this year and am looking forward to my future trips!
DeleteOoh, this was a fun yet educational post!! I had no idea on the significance of the “simple” maple leaf, LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks! Although I do wish that we had learned a bit more about Canada in school, it's been so much fun to go out on the road and learn this on the scene.
DeleteWell I DID know the story behind the Canadian flag, for obvious reasons. I am not going to argue with Elisabeth but I think the BC flag is the prettiest! It's a flag-off!
ReplyDeleteFlag off!!! The next phase is an Elisabeth/Nicole meetup on both sides of the country so that you can take notes on how the other sides live. It may not do anything to settle the flag debate, but it will be a ton of fun.
DeleteLook, the maple leaf of the national flag is ICONIC and PERFECT and I feel like Canadians have every right to sneer at us Americans with our hopefully convoluted and busy national flag. BUT...those provincial flags are terrible flag design. (I'm here to fully admit that most American state flags are also terribly designed.) BUT. The red and white maple flag is AMAZEBALLS so they don't need anything else.
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty hard to beat the Maple Leaf. I can't help but have a soft spot for the provincial flags, though. And the state flags, at least most of them.
DeleteI'm gonna vote for the PEI flag. I like the symbolism represented. I really like their national flag and I had no idea the leaf represented a composite of leaves. I chuckled at 'does it have a nipple?' So funny. I've been to Vancouver Island, not Prince Edward Island. Not sure if I get bonus points for that? I've been to Montreal briefly for Irish dancing world championships.
ReplyDeleteNipples are what started the flag blogging quest so they're going to continue to be part of the criteria even if in the end it turns out that Virginia is the only one with a nipple.
DeleteVancouver Island always scores bonus points, no matter what the question is.
You know, the history of flags are so interesting... I had no idea how the Canadian flag about. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteFlags are really interesting! Who knew???
DeleteI did not know the story of the Canadian flag! Their flag is so pretty! I agree with your ranking. It’s a tie between BC and NS. I am team both and won’t pick between them!
ReplyDeleteBC holds a special place in my heart because it's the first provincial flag that I noticed in detail and I really do like the setting sun. Choosing between the provinces BC and NS is where I draw the line and will not choose a favorite. They are both very dear places. And we have friends there as well.
DeleteI love the Canada maple leaf flag! It's simple, yet meaningful, and it's cheerful. It's difficult to choose a Provincial flag though. I'm going to go with PEI because that lion is just wild! The claws! The tongue! WILD! And the symbolism of the trees is cute. I'm disappointed that there are no nipples so far.
ReplyDeletePEI is a contender for the top spot! I can't get enough of all of the British icons that are a part of Canada, including the wacky lions.
DeleteI thought "The sun never sets on the British Empire", so how is that the setting and not the rising sun on the BC flag? Just wondering.
ReplyDeleteWhat a massive missed opportunity not to stick a nipple on the reclining lion in the Canadian provincial flags. BTW, that lion looks amazingly like my late cat Marlowe when she'd do a massive stretch. Same face.
The USA could take a big lesson from the Canadians here (OH, ON OH SO MANY THINGS) with the flag. Ours is hideously busy. The Canadian flag is a lesson in design: symbolism? check; impact? check; message clarity? check; simplicity? check; immediate recognition? check; charm? check.
Oh Canada!
The sun never sets on the British flag, but it does set in BC. Remember that the sun does not rise in the Pacific, so a sunrise is out for anything related to the ocean in BC! Growing up, my dad would always point out to me anytime a movie was set on the East Coast but showed the sun "setting" in the Atlantic.
DeleteHere's to the Nipple Quest!
I had no idea Canada kept the UK flag for that long! I assumed it disappeared a couple of centuries ago. And the background on the Maple Leaf is great, I had no idea the Big Leaf was a Frankenstein blend of all ten native maple species.
ReplyDeleteAs for the favourite, I’m with Elisabeth and the Nova Scotia flag. Being born in Scotland probably obliges me to support any rogue Saltire that shows up, ha!
NS is leading the polls for favorite flag!
DeleteCanada has not been around for a couple of centuries! Although the colonies were founded around the time that the US colonies were founded, Canada did not become a country until after the Civil War. It's mind boggling how young they are.
I LOVE our Maple Leaf flag, and have been to all four of the provinces you mention (I live in Ontario), but if I had to choose a favourite, it would likely be the PEI flag.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that you are in Ontario! For some reason I thought that you were out West. I think that I assumed that because I "met" you through Nicole, which is silly now that I think about it. Anyway!
DeletePEI is a gorgeous place with a gorgeous flag.
Gah! You have the name of your town in your bio! I was so close on my last trip! The next time I am in your area I will reach out.
DeleteI’m voting for New Brunswick, it’s so pretty! Nova Scotia is pretty too. Least favorite is probably British Columbia (no shade on BC, just don’t love the flag).
ReplyDeleteWith your vote, NB is officially on the board! Ontario is the only province with no votes so far.
DeleteWhat a great rundown of provincial flags. Pretty sure we had to learn about them at some point during school. I love those submissions by school kids for the designs.
ReplyDeleteKaren, thanks so much for stopping by!!! The display at the National Canada Museum had a display with quite a few of the kid flag designs. They were all pretty good, but the banana made me giggle so that was the photo that I took. The museum is well worth a visit if you are in the Ottawa/Gattineau area.
