Last week I wrote that I took the weekend off from running "because I needed it". That was true, but not quite the complete story. As runners and human beings it's normal to be "tired" but last Friday afternoon I came down with a spell of fatigue and a headache out of nowhere that absolutely flattened me. I took a nap on Friday, and then napped most of the next day, and slept very deeply that night. By Sunday the headache cleared up and I was able to keep my eyes open again. I wasn't sure if it would be all zip-a-dee-doo-dah or if there was more to come, so I stayed home for all of this week just to be sure. Oh wait I stay home every week, but I mean in the sense that I didn't run any errands or go on any group runs.
End result: everything is fine and the world did not end because I wasn't out in it.
Now let's talk running!
Monday: well let me back it up, my fitness week actually started on Sunday night. I've started sneaking in my weight workouts the night before. That had me fresh on Monday morning for 3.25 miles outside. It was very hot but I was just glad to be out there and back in the game.
Tuesday: Uh just no on the heat, I took it to the treadmill for 4.5 miles. My treadmill game is a little weak right now. I've found that treadmill running keeps me conditioned for outside running but outside running doesn't translate as well to treadmill running. Back in February I could pound out 6 treadmill miles and think nothing of it but now I can't and that's fine. There's also the mental aspect that when I run outside my mind just runs, and when I'm in the basement my mind is watching TV and it's a jarring shift.
Wednesday: off!
Thursday: 4.25 treadmill miles in the morning and weights at night.
Friday: 3.25 outside miles. I'd originally planned to do a treadmill run, so I took my sweet old time about getting started. When I was ready I realized that I'd left my airpods upstairs and didn't want to wake up my family by stomping up to get them. That left me with the choices of running on the treadmill with no audio - hard pass. The valid options were running outside in the heat now that it was so much hotter because I'd waited so long to start or skipping my run altogether. So it almost goes without saying that I did a mad rush to spray myself down with SPF100, popped a salt tab, and was out the door. And of course the heat didn't get to me and I had a fabulous little run.
Saturday: a very unexpected 6.25 miles in the rain! I assumed that I would be doing a shorter run because of the heat but the rain cooled everything off so I took advantage and racked up the miles. I'm happy to compromise for the weather/treadmill and make my runs shorter when needed but even happier when conditions are right and I don't have to. That was when I made the official call that since I hadn't gotten sick by then I wasn't going to and started venturing out into the world again. I told my running friends that I felt good about running with them again and the response was "good, because we're doing a trail run tomorrow".
Sunday: 4 mile group trail run and very happy to see my friends again.
What's Next
A few days of cooler temps and at least one group run.

DeleteI'm glad that you are feeling better and that some extra rest seemed to solve the fatigue issue! Sometimes our bodies send us an SOS when they want us to slow down!

DeleteWow, glad you're all better! Could that have been a heat exhaustion thing? Now you have a taste of why I cannot spend much time with my Millie gal...the treadmill just feels so.much.harder on my body (not to mention the what it does to my mind LOL). How about I do your outdoor miles for you, and you can have all of my indoor ones ;-) (maybe we've talked about this arrangement before?) Anyways, glad you're feeling better ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm reading everyone else's training this week, I wonder. I did a really hot run the Friday before, though it was pretty short. Yes, let's do a trade for the weather. I'll take the Iowa extreme chill in the winter when I'll be on the treadmill anyway, can you take a few degrees off my summers?

DeleteI did notice that when I did a run on my treadmill last week, which I haven't done in a really long time, it felt much harder than I thought it should have. I always forget about salt tabs, but I think I really could have used one on my long run last week. I was whipped afterwards (and during!).
ReplyDeleteThis is my first summer using them. I've noticed that I don't get dizzy when I take them so that's a huge plus.

Oh no not migraines! I have not had one in a very long time, no idea what started mine or why they stopped but it's been many years. The difference between what I had and a migraine is that I was able to sleep with this. I just remember constant pain and nausea with migraines.
DeleteGlad you are feeling better! Headaches are rough. If I had a treadmill I'd definitely be doing more indoor runs. That's why I lost one running day and upped my OTF classes...I just have no desire to run outside at the moment. It's crazy hot.

DeleteThat's so great that you got to run longer in the rain than expected. Sometimes those runs in the rain just invigorate you like nothing else. Sorry you had a bout of illness but it seems to have passed nicely. Good for you for taking it easy during that time.
