Weekly Round Up: In the Wild

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  This week marked the last week of winter break!  The boys are back at school, I'm sitting at the airport waiting to take to the skies, and Hubs and Doggo are holding down the home front.  Let me tells you the tales of the last week of home life.

Eats

Not much to report.  I had squirreled away the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving in "chicken pot pie" sized portions, and finally got it all served out.  The fellas loved getting a turkey pot pie the week before Christmas and also this week.  As you may know, I detest both chicken and turkey so I had other things on those nights, but making pot pie is always a win b/c it makes the fam happy and it's very easy when the store makes the pie crust and someone else cooks the poultry.

Workouts/Wellness/Weather Report

We had a warm up this week, so I took advantage and hit the hiking trails.  There were a few days when it was nice enough to bring Doggo along.

It was very warm by the weekend, leading to this green and moody shot.

And then by Sunday it was like this again:

Sleep wise, I tried two new things this week.  I took CBD gummies on two nights.  The results were pretty near identical to melatonin: the first night was great, the second night less so but at least not as bad as if I had taken nothing.  I felt a bit groggy both mornings after.

Then the magnesium that I ordered came in, and I had a few decent nights of sleep from that so I will keep taking it.  Bonus points b/c I woke up very clear and alert on those nights, though that could be due to having less of a sleep deficit.  But before we get all "happily ever after", I slept terribly last night so the jury is still out!

Speaking of the magnesium, the bottle came with no instructions so I went to its page on Amazon to get some insight.  I started reading reviews to get the info that I needed, and I happened to see a review written in Spanish.

You guys I understood the review without translating it!!!  I guess something is happening with all of the Spanish lessons after all.

Watching

I had the random inspiration to pick up the Outlander series again.  I'm in the middle of episode two of season seven.  I don't remember how many years it's been since I saw season six, but it has been years.  I had no problem getting back into the show, but I don't remember all of the subplots so I'm going to try to catch up with Youtube recaps.

Reading

We have a lot to talk about!  I hope that no one minds...

I'm almost done with Q is for Quarry by Sue Grafton, and liking it.

It came to my attention that book club is at the end of the month, but like I said I haven't finished Q and I have another book checked out already on my Kindle so it felt tight to start reading another book.  Then I remembered my list of book resolutions, which includes "reading" more fiction on audio.  As you know, I have a lot of listening time on the trails, so I'm now well into my book club book.  It is Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks.  When it's the 1660s and you're a widow with small children and the plague comes to town.  It's very good, though as you might imagine also very sad.

I had run out of podcasts(!) and as much as I love the plague book, I did need something else to lighten the load of the plague so I went ISO another nonfiction book.  Does anyone remember the time that I went to Pelee Island in Canada?  Well, it turns out that someone wrote a book that had my name all over it: The Pelee Project: One Woman's Escape from Urban Madness is a memoir by Jane Christmas.  She was having a moment where life was too much, so she moved to Pelee for three months in winter in 2001.

I'm glad that I didn't read this before I went to Pelee, because I can tell that a lot has changed.  She writes about a grocery store, a convenience store, and the co-op, and when I was there in 2023 the only one of these that existed was the co-op.

Let's Close it Out with a Funny Dog Story

Doggo and I go outside together first thing in the morning.  I always leave my coat by the kitchen table so that we're ready to roll, and I always keep my gloves in the pockets.

One morning this week I put my hands in the pockets and only found one glove.  I knew that the most likely explanation was that I had dropped it in the yard the night before.  But it had snowed, so all I could see was a white blanket on the ground.

Ms Thing of course had no difficultly at all in finding a glove buried in the snow, and she latched on to it and started playing with it.  When we went back inside, she carried it in her mouth and was not about to give up her new toy.

I was able to buy it back with some treats.

What's Next?

I'm headed off on my first adventure of the year!  The next time we talk, it will be from New Orleans!

How was your week?  Any recommendations for New Orleans/Baton Rouge?  At a minimum there will be a swamp tour.

  1. Where the heck are your priorities, taking your glove away from your dog? Finders, Keepers and all that. She worked for it, after all.

Nothing is as wonderful as a chicken/turkey pie. So easy to make (I never make my own crust, either. No brainer.), and so comforting and good. It's simple to make a vegetarian one (or mini ones in ramekins and freeze them), too.

    1. Yes she did, and she was rewarded accordingly!

I used to make pie crusts from scratch...and once I switched I lost the desire to ever do it again. IYKYK

  2. The pie looks amazing! I love using leftovers up. So satisfying.

Enjoy the trip. I can't wait to hear all about it!!! I think Year of Wonders is on my holds list??? Off to check!

    1. Exactly! It's so much fun to fit the puzzle pieces of leftover food together to make something entirely new!

  3. Good job finding the glove, Doggo! Good thing she’s an easy sell with the treats! How cool that you could understand the Spanish - you’re making good progress! I was pleased that I could understand it too, as it’s been a very long time since I took Spanish. Your chicken pot pie looks amazing. What is the crust you buy? I’ve never bought one, but I can see how that would make things so much easier. I look forward to reading about your trip!

    1. I think it's the double Pillsbury crust that's already rolled out? The only thing that I don't like is that the very inner part usually cracks when I unroll it.

  4. NEW ORLEANS!!!!
Hahaha good girl, Doggo! She's a sleuth!
Okay, about Year of Wonders. I read it many years ago and what I remembered most about it were the really gross details. And then after our own plague - Covid - my friend Steph reread it, and I was inspired to do the same in 2021. I didn't love it, but I did find it fascinating that a real town actually did quarantine itself for the good of the surrounding people.

    1. Can confirm there are a lot of really gross details! I'm not sure if I would have wanted to read this during COVID.

  5. We went to New Orleans in the middle of December and had a great time. Take a trolly on St. Charles Avenue to see all the beautiful mansions. We also went to Royal Street to see the bar that is featured in NCIS New Orleans. It took two trolleys to get to it. Snappers is a great restaurant.

  6. Yay for the return (discovery?) of the missing glove! What would we go without our dogs to save the day (and keep us smiling in the process)? Your New Orleans trip sounds amazing… enjoy!

    1. I would be completely lost without Doggo. She knows when something is out of place and immediately gets to the bottom of it.

  7. Doggo is like a real dog now - she's losing all her puppiness! She's so big. I want to cuddle with her. That's all. I have nothing to say about New Orleans - I was there for a long weekend, felt incredibly unsafe, and was unimpressed by the food. I am obviously in the minority, but I hope you have fun and come back and write a glowing review of the place that makes me think I should revisit it.

    1. Technically she is an adult, but she will always be the tiny little 20 pound puppy that we brought home from the shelter two years ago. She's still pretty small at 40 pounds, and full of cuddles.

  8. Love New Orleans! It's been a few years since I was there and I have such great memories.

    Some favourites:
    - pralines from Royal Praline Company,
    - beignets from Cafe du Monde - touristy? Yes. Worth it? I think so!
    - if you like jazz enjoy the music at Preservation Hall, and the Louis Armstrong exhibit at the Jazz Museum
    - dinner at The Original Pierre Maspero's

Hope you have a wonderful time!

  9. Haha, I love that doggo found your glove for you and then only gave it up for treats :) I guess, fair is fair.
    The Pot Pie looks amazing!

Have a great trip. I haven't been to New Orleans so don't have any recommendations but I am sure you'll come back with many :)

    1. German Shepherds are often referred to as "working dogs" meaning that they need to have something to do. Doggo did her job as a glove finder very well and she got paid!

  10. Well, after having done today's Wordle I can at least guess what you are going to eat when you're in New Orleans!
Good news on the magnesium, even if you didn't sleep well last night. I take my magnesium together with zinc (magnesium relaxes muscles and nerves, zinc "calms the brain".)
    Enjoy New Orleans!

    1. That was very spot on! I guessed something else, which is what I had for dinner tonight so this ended up being a "wordle in 5" day.

  11. Doggo looks very wild indeed, and if she is taking down big prey like lost gloves... sounds extremely fierce.

I like neither turkey/chicken nor pot pie, so you are an angel for making such a concoction for your family. Hope you have a blast in New Orleans!

    1. You just brought back a Baby Doggo memory! When she was little there were a pair of work gloves that were left in an empty lot down the street. She was obsessed with "catching" the gloves every time we walked by there! And it was so cute since she was much smaller then and they were very large gloves.

    2. That is an adorable story and now I have very cute images of baby Doggo in my head!

  12. That pot pie looks delicious. I used to enjoy making and eating them bit alas, I have had no leftover meat for a while... So sad. I used to also take the carcass home and make stick, which would then be part of the pot pie too!

I am so glad Doggo found your glove. What a good girl! That is kind of what Shepard's are known for eight? Finding dead bodies, and gloves...? Go Doggo! Have fun on your swamp tour! I can't wait to hear all about it!

    1. She is a good girl! Yep, if anything is out of place in the house or the yard, it does not take her long to find it.

  13. Good trick, Doggo. I should listen to more audio books. I listened to one recently and was surprised that I could juggle a book with my eyes (mostly when in bed at night) and another one with my ears. The weather here has been weird. Some days so warm the snow melts- and then winter returns to say NOT QUITE DONE. Hope the sleep issues are resolved soon. I rarely sleep well the night before a flight. Last night- point in case. And rain was in forecast but instead SNOW. Like blizzard conditions. Curly snc I are in an uber on our way to O’Hare. Ride should have been around 30 min but it is taking an hour plus. A little nervous about getting thru security as we will have maybe ?- 45 min or less to get to our flight. Do not recommend.

    1. Oof and it's only mid January so we know that winter is definitely not done with us yet.

GOOD LUCK ON THE FLIGHT!!! My first plane was delayed and so my workout on Monday was sprinting from one gate to another in O'Hare. I made it just as my section started boarding. Great workout, and no harm no foul but like you say, do not recommend.

  14. I can't wait to hear all about your trip!!! I mentioned my daughter is going to New Orleans on a band trip this year- she's excited about it. They have all sorts of things on their intinerary, like a ghost tour and other teen-friendly activities. I have a feeling you'll be doing some things she doesn't get to do!
Doggo- what a good dog! I mean... that glove could have been lost till the spring thaw.
I'm still waiting for someone to give me THE answer on sleep issues!!! I'm still falling back on Advil PM, and it works. But it's not something I want to take all the time for the rest of my life.

    1. Have you ever been to NoLa? I think that you would love it here. The reason is that they know how to deal with the post holiday blues==>by going right into another holiday. I didn't realize that Mardi Gras is an entire season. On Jan 6th the Christmas decorations go down and the Mardi Gras decorations go up and stay up until Ash Wednesday.

  15. Delurking for somewhat unrelated: We received your Christmas card this week and it made my day. Instead of boring responsable adult mail a fun card from faraway. My pet deprived children send doggo their love and will surely enjoy this doggo story.

Thank you very much for investing time and money to make some strangers happy!

    1. I'm so glad that the card got there! It is fun to send the cards and to liven up the ol' mailbox.

If you ever lose a glove, I hope that a neighbor will lend you a dog to find it!
