Weekly Round Up: Grocery Store Sushi

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.

Food

Nothing much to report.  These days my typical menu is breakfast burritos for breakfast, veggie burritos for lunch (tofu and refried beans), and whatever is quick for dinner.  I had a single girl night on Friday and hooked myself up with some rockin' grocery store sushi.

Workouts

Still streakin' up in here.

Monday: 4 treadmill miles easy

Tuesday: 4 treadmill miles, hill workout

Wednesday: 1 mile outside

Thursday: 4 treadmill miles with a bunch of random speed bursts and the last quarter mile on a 5% incline, weights at night

Friday: 5.25 miles outside at an easy effort

Saturday: 6.25 miles

Sunday: by rights it should have been a one mile day, but I have my booster coming up next week so I though I'd stockpile a few extra miles and save the miler for a day when I'm more likely to need it.  3.25 miles outside.

The big question that I'm dealing with is what's next with the running.  Am I going to just work out to work out or am I going to try to Do Something and go after a big ol' goal?  I don't have any reason to go for distance running until late February when I start gearing up for my spring half.  I feel like the answer is to work on speed.  Stay tuned.

Watching

My AFI Top 100/treadmill entertainment rewatch of the week was Sunset Boulevard.  I've seen this movie several times and am conversant on the plot but even so it had been long enough that the movie was totally fresh.  Here's a good three minute recap (starting about 20 seconds in to the video).

Afterwards I wanted a little more Gloria Swanson, so I watched Sadie Thompson in bits and pieces over the weekend.  Unfortunately it held up to my memory of all other Gloria Swanson movies besides Sunset Boulevard, which is that it's a Gloria Swanson movie so no other effort is required.  The movie is 50% closeups of Gloria and 50% random mismash of other stuff.  But she is fabulous so really the only thing that should have changed was making the movie 90% closeups and 10% other stuff.  My recommendation is drop everything and watch Sunset Boulevard (currently on Amazon Prime) and then watch clips of her other movies on YouTube.

And then I went back to the 80s.  I finished reading Heartburn early in the week and seeing the movie was a given.

  •  The Read the Book or See the Movie contest isn't even close - it's the book 100%.  The movie is a fun watch, so I think that if you've read the book you should treat yo' self to the movie.
  • I must have seen this movie when it came out, which would have been when I was 11.  I remember the scenes where Meryl sits down to watch Masterpiece Theater and Alistair Cooke starts talking about her.  That's probably the only thing that I comprehended about the movie back then.
  • I don't believe I've heard Coming Around Again since the 1980s and it's been stuck in my head ever since I saw the movie on Friday.
  • Jack Nicholson is tricky for me.  I liked him in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I felt that he really boosted Easy Rider.  But 1980's and later Jack Nicholson creeps me out.  That's not a bad thing given the character that he plays in this movie.
  • Both the book and the movie have The Most Satisfying Ending Ever.
  • I read I Feel Bad About My Neck and I Remember Nothing a really long time ago and I had forgotten how good they were.  Heartburn is on the same level.  I don't have very many "I think that everyone should do this" rules about reading, but==>IMO everyone should read a Nora Ephron book.

Reading

As mentioned above, Heartburn was incredible and even more incredible I found another winner after that.  A Million Things by Emily Spurr (recommendation via Wendy) is about a 10 year old girl who carries on with business as usual after her mother disappears.  But how long can she keep up the act before someone notices?  I am completely hooked and the second that I hit publish on this post I'll be heading right back to the book to find out.

  1. I need to read A Million Things! Thanks for the reminder.
Also, thanks for the Heartburn recommendation. I have never heard of it.

Well done on your streak, Birchie! And YES! I'd go for a Big Goal. The nice thing about working on speed is that it doesn't take a lot of time. It's a very efficient goal to train for, especially if you have a treadmill in the dark winter months.

  2. Okay, I might have to hop on the A Million Things bandwagon (as well as the Heartburn one). I am so glad the streaking is working so well for you ;-) I agree with Catrina...go for the speed training, if nothing else just for some fun winter kicks. You have a huge advantage in that you're already on very friendly terms with your treadmill ;-)

  3. Sometimes I wonder if Jack Nicholson is creepy in real life. He's so iconically strange and unsettling in his acting roles, but he's an actor, so surely he's not really like that when he's brushing his teeth and reading the newspaper like rest of us mortals, right? These are the kinds of thoughts I think as I watch movies.
