Weekly Round Up: Quitter's Edition

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  This week I'm going to speed through my usual round up stuff and then tell you about quitting my job.  Again.

Eats

I would say that the NYT cooking section is not my #1 go to, but I do find things that look interesting over there once in a while.  This week I whipped up a simple pasta number, with the number one consideration being modifying it to things that I already had in the house.

Changes:

  • Since I was using Costco frozen broccoli, I air fried it instead of pan frying it.
  • Eliminated the yellow bell peppers since that would have meant going to the store.
  • Halved the pasta.  The recipe as written said a full pound of pasta for four servings, which is A LOT of pasta, even when two of the four servings are for teenage boys.  It just seemed like too much in proportion to the other ingredients, and I saw a few comments called that out.
  • Lol of course I skipped the red pepper flakes for the main dish on behalf of the tender palates in my house but I added a spoonful of Calabrian chili paste to my portion.
Review: super easy to cook, everyone loved it.

Workouts

I'm on the verge of dropping the workout section from the weekly round up.  It definitely had a place back in my running days, but there just isn't much to say about workouts now besides that I do them.  I think it's time to let it go and I can always add it back when/if something notable happens.

In place of a workout recap, I'll give you two pictures from our weekend hike with Doggo - at the top of this post and here.  We went to a new-to-us place.  The terrain wasn't very difficult, which was fine.  I mean, we could have used a little more of a challenge but in hiking you take what you are given.  Doggo enjoyed splashing around in the stream and chasing chipmunks.

Watching

Still cranking away on Your Friends and Neighbors, and it is still holding its ranking of "good enough to keep watching" and "I'd watch Jon Hamm in anything".  I have one more episode to go.

Reading

Here is where it gets good!

Last week I told you that I was 10% in to Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is a book that I put off reading because it is about an animal, so in my mind there was too much potential for it to miss the mark if the author got it wrong, or too much potential for it to be sad if the author got it right.

RBC was worth the hype!  The only thing that I had trouble with is that in the beginning there is a slow spot where a lot of characters are introduced.  I had a hard time seeing how they related to the story, and frankly, didn't care for them.  After a stretch of me saying (to myself), "OK, can we get back to the octopus and the old lady already?" the ship righted itself and everything paid off.  Once the book got past the 50% mark I was All In.  The ending gave me misty eyes and required a nose blow.

Next up: the book that everyone else on the planet is reading right now!  That would be Heartwood by Amity Gaige.  My hesitation was that the Sarah's Bookshelves podcast went all in on this one, as they did for her previous book, which was a DNF for me.  I waited until I heard a few more yes votes from other readers that I trust, and also it helped that it was about hiking.

The story is about a woman who disappears while hiking the Appalachian trail.  We get three main POVs: the hiker, the leader of the search team, and an older woman in a nursing home who is interested in the story as it unfolds on the news.  Plus we hear from a few other folks in passing.  I generally do not do well with multiple POV/shifting timelines but Heartwood was a stellar exception.  Count me in on the hype!

Currently: the latest book by an author who has been a hit in the past (you have read The Last Flight, haven't you?)  That would be The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark.  As you can guess from the title, it's about a ghostwriter who has built her entire life around being invisible so that no one will figure out that her dad is a famous author who was suspected of murdering his siblings.  The time comes for dad to write his tell all, and guess who he picks for his ghostwriter?  I've barely started the book, so it's too soon to say, but the story has yet to rope me in.  We'll see what shakes out.

Exciting Life Announcement (I think?)

I quit my job.

Sort of.

There was an off-blog situation that made it convenient for me to hold on to the job, but that cleared up last month.  I continued to hold off on quitting, and continued to be miserable, and last week I finally had enough.  During my weekly meeting with my boss, I told her that the job was not working for me, and offered to stay until they found a replacement.  I told her that my next role was going to be taking some time off from work to travel.

The response: "If we made it a part time role would you consider staying?"

Well, that's a curveball.  Maybe?

Today I had a conversation with my boss's boss who told me that they just love me, that they have outsourced the big horrible project that tipped the scale from me not liking the job to hating it, and he asked if I would stay on and see if I still felt the same way in a few months.

After the conversation ended, I realized that it was identical to the conversation I had with my then-employer two years ago where I quit and the answer was "No you didn't!  We'll give you a raise".  In this case it seems like the answer is "No you didn't! We'll just take away the work that you hate."

(In case anyone is new or has forgotten due to boredom, I am an accountant who specializes in payroll.  It's a bit niche but I'm hardly the only person on the planet who does this kind of work.  The normal reaction that I get when I quit a job is "don't let the door hit you".)

So now you know everything that I know about my current job status.    Is my role part time and if so what at what hours/pay/benefits?  Or am I free to travel as I please at full salary for the next few months?  I'm not clear but I guess my next move is to live my life and see how work reacts.

What's Next

A little more time at home, and then I'm off to BC to live the West Coast Life for a bit.  Then I'll be back home for a bit and then I'll jet set off to Nova Scotia to see how the East Coast lives.

Peace out!  See you next week!

  1. You are queen of modifying recipes! You could start a whole blog section on just that and I'd be happy. I seem to modify recipes to unrecognizable death. I guess I don't know when to stop? And I like your workouts section. It reminds me that exercise doesn't have to be as structure as mine currently is. Choices, right? Enjoy your travels, and may the best job decision win!

    1. I change so many things that sometimes it almost feels wrong to link back to the original recipe. 99% of my substitutions are to avoid making a special trip to the grocery store.

  2. Ah, Birchie, but I think you DID quit.
When a job only becomes tolerable because management scrambles to patch things after you say you're leaving, it’s not a fix, it’s a delay tactic. You’ve said before this work makes you miserable. That’s the part to listen to.
Luckily, your upcoming travels give you the perfect breather to step back and think things through. West Coast, East Coast... sounds like a great backdrop for figuring out what you want to do next.
Enjoy it, Birchie!! And of course, we're staying tuned for all the recaps!

    1. I know it's a delay tactic on both sides. Financially there is no reason to stay, and yet I keep clinging to the paycheck. I'll get there!

  3. WEST COAST GIRLS I CANNOT WAIT
I feel exactly the same way as you with regards to "reporting" workouts. What is there to say? I did them. I get you, I AM you. Unless there's a really pretty photo from a walk, I have no desire to write about them.
I'm so happy for you about the job front!!! More adventures in store for Birchie!

  4. I've never shared my workout schedules because it seems like they're for me to make me a healthier me so that I can do and share the other things I do and think. My point is, I understand your reasoning for dropping them if you do. Interesting about your new *maybe* part-time job. Plot twist, that one.

    1. Exactly - I brush my teeth twice a day and floss once, but there's a reason that I don't blog about it.

  5. Wow, Plot Twist about the job. You had to be wondering, 'Do they know how awful my job is and that NO ONE ELSE WOULD DO IT?' It makes me think of when you get a quote for a service or a thing and you turn it down, and then the person says, "Well, what if I knock 20% off the price?" Well, hey! Why didn't you just give me that option at the get-go? Sigh.

The nature photo at the top of the post is lovely. I'd hang around there, too.

    1. I'm wondering at the reasoning as well. We've had a lot of turnover, so maybe management wants to keep that number stable? It's not adding up but I'll keep taking the paycheck for right now.

  6. I'm so envious that you get to see Nicole and spend time in BC! I have been to BC multiple times and have loved everything that I've seen. It's a gorgeous province so have the best time! Are you flying into Kelowna?

What a plot twist about the job! Dang they are desperate to keep you. I don't know what my employer would do if I quit. They might try to offer me more money but I'd be annoyed that they didn't give me more money earlier (which I've asked for multiple times - they did give me a bit more this past year but not as much as I would like). All that said, I am a good 6-8 years away from being able to say peace out, MFers...

    1. I can't wait for BC. I'm flying in and out of Vancouver and going all over the place including to Kelowna.

There's no way to know how an employer will react. Some of them have been all too ready to get me out of there, and some have been clingy. Some of the "don't let the door hit you" places have been jobs that I performed well in. It's very interesting to observe all of this - though not that interesting.

  7. Wow, that's crazy- you're at a point in your life where you don't need to work (I'm guessing the "situation" that got resolved was something we talked about when you were here) and nobody will let you quit. I do remember that from your last job, too. Well... I guess we'll see what happens. I guess it's nice to be so valued (???) and now you can just work on your own terms until it doesn't work anymore.
I have Heartwood on hold at the library! It sounds really good.
I think it goes without saying that I am GREEN WITH ENVY about your upcoming travel. You know I'll be living vicariously, so take lots of photos and tell every detail!!!

I think you put it well...valued???

  8. Ugh, that’s a super frustrating situation with your job situation. I’ve been searching for a different job, for the past several months, and it’s an annoying place. I’m being super picky, so a lot of that is on me, LOL, but still. I’m envious of your upcoming travels! I hope that gives some well-earned peace and tranquility.

    1. Props for being picky! There is no point in changing jobs if the new one has the annoyances of the old one. Happy hunting!

  9. Congratulations on sort of quitting your job. I’m curious to see how this ends up going. I hope you get what you want in either a part time job that works for you or the clarity to quit all together with a bit more money in the bank. I am also an accountant so I’ve been interested in hearing about your career journey.

    1. Team accountant! If you see this and you feel comfortable saying it in a comment, let me know what kind of accounting you do. It really can be a great field, I've just gotten fried in recent years.

  10. EXCITING about your job situation, I hope that it works out whatever way makes you happiest.

MORE EXCITING is your upcoming Canada travels, West and East! I am looking forward to reading all about it!

  11. I am not in the mood for introducing new recipes but I bet my people would support that. Coach grills a ton in the summer and I am here for that. I need to check out a book soon as I am almost done with my current book. I have wanted to watch the octopus show- maybe I will read it first I usually read all my book club books far in advance as a form of panic in case I don’t have time the month of book club- but then I feel I have forgotten so much of it when it is time to discuss. Hmm.

The job situation- sounds promising? Maybe? Good for you for saying when enough is enough. Clearly you are a valued employee and they would be wise to make this work- but if it isn’t for you, I hope you move on and feel good about it.

    1. That's right! Someone said at the bookclub that RBC is going to be a Netflix show. Sally Field and Bill Pullman's son are the leads, so for the cast alone I am going to need to see it.

I did take some time away from cooking family dinner, but recently everyone's schedules have changed so it makes the most sense for me to do it. It takes a special mood to bring in new recipes for sure. I'm not doing anything too risky by staying in the taco and pasta realms.

  12. Yay for saying enough when it’s enough! (And, also for being such a valued employee that they were willing to make concessions…) I’m so excited to read about your travels and see where this job plot twist lands you.

  13. I'm so happy that you ended up liking RBC! I don't know why it makes me so happy, but it does. I absolutely loved it.
That's so interesting about your job! If nothing else, you're relieved of the big horrible project! It's always nice to feel valued and heard at a job. But being miserable isn't good. I'll be excited to find out what you decide to do. And meanwhile, I'm looking forward to reading about your travels!

  14. I was Meh about RBC. It was fine, but I didn't love it, but I think I'm in the minority on that one!
I have Heartland on my holds list and it is taking forever to come in at the library, but I'm pumped. I've read quite a few memoirs from people who have done the trail, so it will be interesting to read a fictionalized account.

    1. There was a slow spot in the first half of the book that nearly put me off, and if it hadn't been for bookclub I might have bailed. But once it got good, it really got good!

Out of the memoirs that you've read, are there any that you recommend?
