It's time for our third installment in The Topic That I Never Imagined That I Would Ever Blog About: state flags!
Content warning: this post contains images of a nipple.
How It Started
Shortly after declaring my quest to spend at least one night in every state, I started to take notice of state flags. I was toying with the idea of maybe writing something about them someday when The Washington Post ran the latest news that a lawmaker in Texas was calling for the removal of all images of the Virginia state flag from school curriculum because the flag has [gasp!] a nipple. I took this as a sign to drop everything and to write up a rundown and ranking of the state flags for the eight states that I had visited at the time.
How It's Going
As of this writing I have visited 30 states, so it's time to catch up our state flag rankings. We're going to review seven state flags in this post, which will bring the blog total up to 15, and then we'll continue to catch up in batches of five.
Today we're going to take a look at these state flags, in the order that I visited them. Then we're going to rank them and then merge them into the previous list so that we end up with a ranking of all 15 flags.
Michigan
Virginia (aw yiss!!! Nipplegate!!! The one that started it all)
Florida
Louisiana
Georgia
Alabama
Arkansas
Let's dive right in!
California
Whoa! Let's start off strong with The Bear.
Michigan
Oof, we got off to a strong start but our next contender is a dud. I really had to strain to find the Michigan flag out and flying. Here is the best shot that I got when I visited Lansing, and it's trying its best to blend in with the building behind it.

I don't hate it, but it's so hard to see on the blue background.
Virginia
Here is the Nipple!!!
In case anyone is not aware of the backstory, the lady is the Goddess Virtus, and 100 years ago someone got confused by her powerful calf muscles and thought that the image was of a man, so they dropped her neckline in order to make Virtus's gender crystal clear. Every once in a while someone notices the nipple and makes a fuss about it.
Florida
The bad news about Florida's flag: no nipple.
More bad news about Florida's flag: The red cross is a nod to the Cross of St. Andrew. On the surface, this is fine, and in fact it is the same image that is on Scotland's and Nova Scotia's flags. The problem is that it is the same image that forms the background on the Confederate flag, so when we're dealing with states that were formerly in the Confederacy, there's a question about what the intention is.
If we assume good intentions, it's a nice looking flag. If it is supposed to be evoking the good ol' days of the War of Northern Aggression...well, we've got a problem. I'm not sure which side to land on but it is a topic that we're going to be revisiting in this post and in this series.
Louisiana
Blue flag, white bird. I can get behind this.
Georgia
Alabama
We're going short and sweet here with the St. Andrew Cross. I mean, yeah it's Florida's flag just without the seal.
We'll make up for it with a little flex. When your state is first alphabetically, that's a great reason to have a display of all 50 state flags in front of your capitol.
Arkansas
- Statement flags: these have a unique, unforgettable image. California is the prime example.
- Invisible flags: these flags that have busy drawings on either a dark blue or white background. Michigan and West Virginia are two of many examples.
- We Haven't Gotten Over the War of Northern Aggression Yet flags. The south east states are the example here. That's a mouthful so we'll call them WONA flags.
- Does the flag have a nipple?
- Was the flag noticeable when I visited? This is a trickier criteria to nail now that I'm on the lookout for flags, but hey it's all subjective and just my opinion anyway.
- Is there something about the flag that makes me say "whoa"?
- Do I like the flag?
- New Criteria added since the last time: where does in fit in the statement/invisible/WONA classification scale.
Michigan - no, no, no, no, Invisible
Virginia - yes, yes, yes, yes, Statement
Florida - no, yes, no, yes, WONA
Louisiana - no but the pelican is feeding her chicks so even though birds don't have nipples or lactate this qualifies as an Honorable Mention, yes, yes, yes, Statement
Georgia - no, no, no, no, WONA
Alabama - no, yes, no, yes, WONA
Arkansas - no, no, yes, no, WONA
- California. I dearly love Virginia's flag, but when I stand it next to California, the bear takes the lead.
- Virginia. Virtus rocks! A very close contender for #1. We need more nipples on flags.
- Louisiana. The big bird!
- Florida. We're assuming good intentions here, and the Florida flag is a close cousin to Nova Scotia with the St. Andrews cross + state seal
- Alabama. Again, we're assuming good intentions. Maybe if I had visited Alabama before Florida I would have preferred the simplicity of Alabama, but since I saw Florida first I prefer their addition of the state seal.
- Michigan. If we were ranking flags on their ability to be invisible, Michigan would rate toward the top of the list.
- Georgia. Look, just because your flag has an unfortunate past doesn't mean that you have to settle for a boring present. No one benefits when insult is added to injury.
- California
- Virginia
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Ohio. I previously rated it below Maryland and Wisconsin but it's really grown on me. An entirely subjective rating system has its perks!
- Maryland
- Louisiana
- Florida
- Alabama
- Wisconsin. Even though the presentation of a busy drawing on a dark blue flag ranks it in the Invisible class, it does have the image of a badger so it gets a higher ranking.
- Michigan
- Pennsylvania
- Minnesota
- West Virginia
- Georgia

I quite enjoyed reading this post about flags! I agree with you that California is #1 with it's statement bear. Virginia is also amazing with its powerful female and nipple. Come on people, nipples are quite important in societies in a non-porno way. And I love Louisiana's pelican too. I'd say Alabama's is my least favorite. The big red cross just makes me think of an X, as in something is crossed out or you're being told no.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, you nailed it! Alabama's flag is a big no.
DeleteAlso yes to non-porno nipples
California Bear FTW!!! I will admit to loving our flag. I’m also partial to the Alaskan flag, though there are even fewer nipples than the CA flag. (I mean, bears are mammals, so there are nipples on the CA flag, they are just hidden by posture and fur.)
ReplyDeleteWhen I see the VA motto, “Sic Semper Tyrannous”, I think of John Wilkes Booth yelling that when he assassinated Lincoln. Not cool, JWB.
I haven't seen all of the state flags yet, but it is going to be hard for anyone to top the bear.
DeleteI will admit to scanning the bear for nipples. I think they need to be visible to qualify. I mean, the invisible flags have tons of men, who also have nipples, but they're not showing them off.
It's true though, looking at Virtus, I can see how someone could mistake her for a young, very strong man. Those arms and that jawline are doing some serious work! But yes, I do like that it's a strong woman!
ReplyDeleteLove the Statement/Invisible/WONA classification system!
Strong women FTW!
DeleteHmm. The Arkansas flag kind of reminds me of the Clorox logo???
ReplyDeleteI love the Virginia flag, and I love your framing of it as not just a nipple but as a powerful woman. Cracking up over here are "does the flag have a nipple?" as a criterion for judging.
I am also finding myself charmed by the Louisiana flag. A bird and her babies! How sweet and un-boring! Speaking of boring: my least favorite is Alabama. The cross may have a lot of historical heft, but it's a snooze fest on a white field.
Without you, I would have pretty much zero interest in flags. Yet you manage to make flags both fun and fascinating. Thank you for your service.
YESSS SUZANNE THAT'S IT!!!! Arkansas's flag is the clorox logo! As soon as I can get my hands on one in the field I will update this post (with credit to you of course).
DeleteIf not for the WP nipple article, I might never have written about state flags since, let's face it, it's a little bit of an odd interest.
There is a lot of controversy around the Minnesota state flag, too, even though it was designed by a bipartisan committee. I like it. It’s pretty and distinctive and the previous one was not good. It looked sort of like Michigan - blue background with some crap on it, but it included a bit of a racist rendering of native Americans. Now people think it has something to do with Somalians, for cripes sake and some cities refuse to fly it. All the eye rolls. I wish it had loons incorporated but you can’t win them all. I think it’s great for a state with 10k+ lakes!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun project and has made me pay more attention to state flags!
The flag committee really missed the mark by not putting a loon on the flag. Next time, folks! At least they changed from an invisible to a statement, so it's a step in the right direction.
DeleteFlorida- figures. You're being generous to assume good intentions.
ReplyDeleteI don't know- I think I have to go with Virginia for #1. I mean the whole thing is so bizarre that I love it. It's a woman who actually does look like a man, so let's show her nipple? And no one is going to question that??? Now I want to go to Virginia just to see this flag flying.
I couldn't hate on FL since the flag is so close to Nova Scotia's design.
DeleteMy pictures don't do the VA flag justice. It's an awesome image.
I honestly had no idea state flags could be so interesting! And the variety! I grew up in NY and live in Ohio now - too very different flags, even different shapes! I can't believe that's the VA state flag and I've never heard of it. Ha, it's too good - have to vote for that for obvious reasons!
ReplyDeleteI'm in NY right now on my way to Albany to check out the flag! I will report back.
DeleteThe state flags are such odd and fascinating things.
I love these posts about flags and state capitol buildings. Maybe I just like judging things?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, for this particular roundup, I have to say I like LA's flag the best. It shows a mom, it shows a bird, and there's no shitful homage to the CSA (which they can call a St Andrew's cross, but they're not fooling anyone).
The Raison d'Etre of the nipple is cracking me up. Women = Boobs is some pretty basic math there. Couldn't they just have added some mascara? LOL LOL
Aw Nance, you nailed it! I do like judging things! Capitols and state flags don't have feelings, so they don't mind.
DeleteOn reflection I think I might need to bump LA up on the list. Mama Bird is growing on me by the moment.
1) It's the fact that it's a woman. The nipple is them distracting from that.
ReplyDelete2) I am appalled at the WONA states. Appalled.
3) Did anyone else look at Georgia's flag and think it was fuchsia (NB: I needed spellcheck for that)? Do I need to adjust my color balance?
