Weekly Sweats: 3 out of 5 ain't bad



This week's highlights: I had two consecutive days of sucky runs and then three consecutive days of good runs, got my long run in on a Friday, and did more strength work than I've done in a good long while.  Here's how the past 30 miles have gone.

Monday: 4.25 miles on struggle bus central.  I feel like I often have a "case of the Mondays" for my first run of the week so nothing out of the ordinary to report there.  I also felt a bit like a senior on the last day of school heading into an open-book exam, because going into this run I was one mile away from my all time highest mileage month.  I closed out August with 127 miles with my past record being 124 miles in March 2019.  It's still hard to believe that August of all months was my record breaker.

Tuesday: 6.25 miles and there is no other way to say it, this run sucked.  There was no "reason" that I can think of, but my body was just like "running?  What is this crap?"  After a not-great warmup I launched into 2x 1.5 mile repeats and my body was not having it.  I went through the motions and let my watch play the workout through and beep away when I wasn't on pace.  One of my favorite taglines for a workout is "but did you die?" and that sums this one up.

I'm calling out how much the Monday and Tuesday runs sucked because...well sometimes running sucks.  I'm always the first to shout out the good runs (spoiler: the rest of the week) but I feel that's it does a disservice not to call out the bad times as well. 

Wednesday: rest day!!!!

Thursday: I "just ran" to get myself back in the game.  6.25 miles and it was good, so very good.

Friday: took advantage of my pandemic WFH schedule and got my long run done.  I ramped up to 9 miles and I don't want to say that it was easy, so let's just say it was a good time. 

Saturday: 4.25 miles with the goal being an easy run to close out the week.  I decided to mix it up by, gasp, driving somewhere that wasn't my neighborhood to do my run.  I went to a bike and hike trail that I've never been on before and explored.  I set off, feeling a little bit tired, and turned around after 2 miles, which was the first time that I looked at the Garmin.  I was shocked, shocked to see that I was under an 11 minute pace so I kinda pushed myself to keep it there.  The only downside to the bike and hike trail is that walkers, runners, and bikers are three different types of animals and it's hard to mix.  But with that said I think my goal for the fall needs to be getting out of my neighborhood a bit more.

Sunday: rest day!!!!

What's Next

Ugh, weather why ya gotta be like that.  Looks like next week will be toasty so I will do what I can with what I have.  Half marathon #5 is a few weeks away (my goal is to do it on the "real" race day but if I need an extra time to build up or if the weather is warm I may defer a week or so).

  1. Sorry to hear about the sucky runs this week :( Those can be so frustrating, especially when there's no rhyme or reason for it! Glad that your other runs this week, especially the long run, went well!

  2. Tuesday was a bad run day for me too--I blame the full moon. The whole day was off kilter. You had great miles for August!

  3. Oh yes, the up and down nature of running can definitely be frustrating. But the good runs are what keep us coming back. Really you guys are toasty next week? Our forecast doesn't even hit 70. So crazy!

  5. I've had some really good runs and some really bad runs lately. I think the weather has lot to do with it. Hopefully we will get some nice fall weather soon!

  6. Muy impressivo! YOU are totally rocking the mileage (even on the "sucky" runs). I agree with calling out both the good and bad runs (as well as races, finish times, etc.). There's a lot to be said about keeping it real and integrity ;-) I have a sneaking suspicion you are going to dominate your fall races...

  7. Glad the good runs out numbered the sucky ones, and way to go on the 9. I played musical runs this summer too. Way to go on the personal record of mileage

  9. What a great week! So fun you explored a new path, though hard to navigate the crowds. Good to be honest about the crappy runs, we all have them!

  10. Good way to end the week! I like going on our multi-use path whenever I can. I see a lot of familiar people - like the "guy who says Hi", "lady who never responds", "lady with the cute dog", "old guy I talk to"... yep, all my friends! :)

  11. Wow!!! Well done on those 127 miles!! I had to convert it to km - 204, and guess what? I signed up for a September virtual challenge of running 200km which is about 124miles so hopefully I will be joining you soon! My highest is 177km so a way to go but I'm hopeful! Also, well done for getting out of your neighbourhood for a run! You know how much I love exploring different places so I'm really glad you did it. Best of luck for this new month!

  13. I'm sorry it was a tough week. I hate that. However, you have racked up so many miles and that's super impressive!

    I really want to run a 10K again. Just 2.2 more miles to go!
