Weekly Eats: Well Done

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition, my husband and I tag teamed to make Christmas dinner, and through our separate but equal distractions elsewhere, ended up a bit long on the cooking times.  Yes our dinner ended up a bit too "well done" but it was a good dinner.

Weekly Sweats: Appetite

This week's good news: my appetite for outdoor running came back with a vengeance.  This week's bad news: my appetite for the treadmill is not quite there.  21.75 miles of running and three - count 'em - three weight workouts.

Weekly Sweats: A Mixed Bag

In this week's news: it was the best week of strength training I've had in a long, long time.  I'd say it wasn't a great week for running, except I got to run so that's not true.  19 miles of running.

Weekly Eats: Christmas Decorations

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition I made beef brisket, had a mac n'cheese mishap, and found a dreamy s'mores pie.   In other news our Christmas decorations are up.

Weeky Sweats: Heatwave

In this week's adventures, a spell of nice weather had me far away from the treadmill.  22.75 miles and miscellaneous Peloton adventures ensued.

Weekly Eats: Food Aversions

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.

I've been thinking about the subject of food aversions lately, brought on partly by Thanksgiving and partly by the book I'm reading.

Weekly Sweat: Hanging with the Cool Kids

22.5 miles of running this week and SO MANY THINGS to talk about!

  • I became the Last Person on Earth to try the Peloton app.
  • On a related note, I got a wake up call that slacking on strength training and stretching has not been great for my body.
  • We had our first winter storm of the season.

Weekly Eats: A Four Day Weekend!

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week I underestimated the magic of a four day weekend and the amount of Thanksgiving goodies that two people can eat.

My company doesn't have a PTO policy, apart from "as long as the work gets done we don't care".  It's been great in previous years but not so great this year when there's no where to go so I just haven't taken any time away from work.  I didn't realize until I woke up on Saturday morning that ooh...we'd had two days off and had the luxury of two more to go.  Aah the bliss of a double weekend.  Not that we "did" anything but it was so nice to have the time off.

Thanksgiving wise, we had a blast.  The food already got its own post.  I thought that we'd be swarming under the weight of leftovers but we surprised ourselves.

Weekly Sweats: Turkey Trot

In this weeks adventures, I ran a virtual 5k that was all Turkey and not much trot.  20.6 miles.

Thanksgiving Recap

Last year: for the first time in our relationship, my husband and I found ourselves alone on Thanksgiving.  The kids were with their mom and the rest of the family was with in-laws, so we had to wait until Friday for our big Thanksgiving bash.  We were oh-so-clever and put together a small semi-homemade Thanksgiving dinner and had a wonderful day.

This year: like just about everyone else on the planet, hubs and I found ourselves alone on Thanksgiving.  Here is the story of our oh-so-clever, more than semi-homemade Thanksgiving dinner, and our wonderful day.

Weekly Eats: Surviving

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  This week's title is a nod to Shaun of the Dead...work has been extreme and about all that I can say is that I am surviving.  I have had the longest work day today so excuse me if this post is a little disjointed (I mean more so than usual), but I felt like popping in to chit chat about food, watching Shaun of the Dead with my family, and an incredible read.

Weekly Sweats: Recharge

I am coming back from some unspecified running woe.  The only clue that I have to work with is that I did two very hard workouts back to back a few weeks ago and it was like my body shut down on me.  After backing off, I feel like things are starting to come back.  24.25 miles this week, with absolutely no thanks to the weather.

Weekly Eats: Book Flight

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This was a hot week on the TV and reading front, so let's skim through the eats so we can get to the good stuff.

Weekly Sweats: Reset

Welp, things got off track a bit.  I made the rookie mistake of running two hard workouts back to back "because I could" and my body told me to slow my roll.  I think I'm in the same place that I was at this time last year where I just needed to run less.  So that's exactly what I've been doing!

Weekly Eats: Currently

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  I managed to stay ahead of the family dinner meal curve this week and tried an incredible new stir fry.

So I've Been Posting My Meals on the Internet for Three Years...

Today is the three year anniversary of the first weekly eats post.  That's right, Weekly Eats is a threenager!  As I've done every year around this time, it's time to take a look back and reflect on the "best of the best".

Weekly Eats: A Very Good Week

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  Guys, this was a Good News week all around.  Something very, very good happened to my husband at work.  The kids are rocking school (it comes easily to one and not so easily to the other).  I managed to feed everyone!  And found a good TV show and some really good books.

Weekly Sweats: Curveball

28 miles of running went down this week, no thanks to the weather.

Monday, October 26, 2020

Weekly Eats: Feeding the Fam

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's saga, I managed to stay one step ahead of our crazy schedules and feed my family, I watched a lotta reality TV, and I have a definite position to take on the book that I wasn't sure about last week.

Weekly Sweats: The Final Fartlek

The goal this week was to take it easy enough to finish recovering from my fall half marathon bender and then transition over to 5k work.  27.8 miles later I think we're on track!

Weekly Eats: Reality

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's news, I finally got caught up on meal prep and went on quite the reality TV bender.

Sunday, October 18, 2020

Weekly Sweats: The AfterHalf

This week was the aftermath of my fall half marathon spree.  13.5 miles of recovery ensued.

Weekly Eats: A Great Problem to Have

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  I am still struggling mightily to plan meals in the never ending sea of work and kids' nighttime activities.  On the one hand I wish I was doing better at it and on the other hand the "problem" of having a good job that I enjoy and the kids getting to do neat stuff at night is a problem that I am very happy to have.

Weekly Sweats: Half Marathon #6

Alright my friends, since we last talked:

  • I've run 30 miles including half marathon #6 AN IN-PERSON REAL LIVE RACE
  • Running two half marathons in two weeks was not the right thing for my level of fitness==>I achieved my 2nd slowest half and am in a world of hurt
  • But if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't have changed a thing
Sit back and let me tell you all about it!

Weekly Eats: Zoup's On!

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week I was on the verge of having our dinners planned out and tried out a new soup recipe.

Weekly Sweats: Fartleks and Speed Update

On the surface it would seem like not a lot happened this week.  I spent a fair amount of time basking in the (virtual) post half marathon glow, I took a few days off, and ended up with 19.25 miles in my running bank.  It doesn't seem like there is anything to write about this week....ha ha just kidding we have a ton of stuff to talk about.

Weekly Eats: Spaghetti for Four

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's adventures, we had a major breakthrough on the family dinner front.

Weekly Sweats: Half Marathon #5

In this week's news, I ran 27 miles including the virtual version of my favorite race ever.  Let's get into it!

Monday, September 21, 2020

Weekly Eats: OMG a Trader Joe's Haul!

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week I went to TJ's and bought All of The Things and had adventures with the air fryer.

Sunday, September 20, 2020

Weekly Sweats: Another (virtual) 5k PR!

Oh my goodness, we have a lot to talk about this week.

  • 21.6 miles of running.  I reduced my mileage partly to get in a 5k and partly because I didn't feel great for a few days
  • NDB, just a little 5k PR...for the 3rd time this year.
  • My 2nd fastest 10 miler ever

Ok, let's get started!

Weekly Eats: the Return of the Sofritas Bowl

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week saw the return of my beloved sofritas bowls, my continued struggles with getting dinner on the table, and some old favorites in the movie and book departments.

Weekly Sweats: Easy Miles and Where I am with the Half

The irony of my title is that none of the 32 miles that I ran this week were easy.  The weather wasn't in my favor so I "just ran" instead of trying to do workouts.  I also realized that my next half marathon is a week sooner than I thought it was (I had the date correct but I miscounted the number of Saturdays in September) so I increased my long run distance to try and catch up.

Weekly Eats: Just One Idea

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  If you came here looking for fresh new meal ideas, sorry but this week I did not deliver in that department.  The first few days of the month are always very busy work wise for me and exceptionally so this week.  I had just one meal idea and it took me until the weekend to make it a reality.

Weekly Sweats: 3 out of 5 ain't bad

This week's highlights: I had two consecutive days of sucky runs and then three consecutive days of good runs, got my long run in on a Friday, and did more strength work than I've done in a good long while.  Here's how the past 30 miles have gone.

Weekly Eats: Yada Yada, Yada

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition we found stuff to eat, though nothing too exciting, and I'm set in the TV and book departments.

Sunday, August 30, 2020

Weekly Sweats: Compromise

The theme of this week was doing what I could with what I had.  Last week the weather was in my favor and the world was my oyster.  This week, well, let's just say that Mother Nature got August temps back to average and then some.  I called up my friend the treadmill and gave up my long run and got in 26 wonderful miles in return.

7 Things About a Sheprador

Today is National Dog Day so I'd like to take a moment to pay tribute to my stepdog.  Neither my husband nor I ever planned to be dog owners, but a few years after the divorce my stepsons' mom got a dog "for the kids" and after a while it became clear that both the kids and the dog were happiest when they were under the same roof so...that was our path to dog ownership.  And hey, all of the adults involved are very happy with this arrangement as well.

I had always accepted the story that my stepsons were told, which was that once upon a time a German Shepherd met a Black Lab and they Loved Each Other Very Much, but recently we learned that there is an official name for this kind of dog: a Sheprador.  Intrigued, I did a little research, by which I mean that I read the first hit that google brought up: 7 Things You Need to Know Before Buying a German Shepherd & Lab Mix (A.K.A. Sheprador).  The first thing on the list made me giggle, so I felt that I needed to write a response to the 7 things.

Weekly Eats: Put an Egg on It

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week I realized that I have been missing out on one of the biggest work from home perks: eggs for lunch!  I'm not always the biggest fan of meat, but I'm always down for an egg.  Apart from not having a great way to cook them back in the old days when I went to an office, I also avoided them for lunch because until recently I used to have them for breakfast nearly every morning.  I think 2 eggs a day is on everyone's OK list but 3-4 a day is questionable and as much as I love eggs, even I don't want them that much.  But now that I'm no longer eating them for breakfast, lunch is wide open for eggs.

Weekly Sweats: Living the Dream

I lived my best runner's life this week with temperatures in the (very) low 50's.  I've heard it said that training in heat and humidity is "poor man's altitude training" and I feel very much like I went from 10,000 feet to sea level.  30.5 miles of running and the bare minimum in the weight lifting department.

Monday, August 17, 2020

Weekly Eats: A Week With a Plan

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  This week was notable in that I actually did meal prep and had a plan for the week instead of getting caught like a deer in the headlights every night at dinner time.

Sunday, August 16, 2020

Weekly Sweats: A Seinfeld Week

Fitness wise, this was a "Seinfeld" week: a week about nothing.  29.25 miles and more baby steps toward weight workouts went by, so if you're down for some running chit chat, lace up and we'll go out for a quick run around the block.

Monday, August 10, 2020

Weekly Eats: Busy Busy Busy

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  This week was my busy week at work, so I spent a lot of time in our upstairs office doing #thuglife accounting things while my family somehow survived.

Sunday, August 9, 2020

Weekly Sweats: Fast Times

In this week's recap, 28.75 miles of running and some baby steps toward strength training went down.  4 out of 5 runs this week had 10:xx splits in them, which is always very exciting.

Monday, August 3, 2020

Weekly Eats: Breakfast Sammie Edition

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  In this week's edition I'm crushing on egg sandwiches, chickpea salads, and harvesting some garden goods.

Sunday, August 2, 2020

Weekly Sweats: Quantity

The TL&DR version of this week's post: I wanted to run a lot so I did.  33 miles went down.

Weekly Eats: You are what you eat

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  This weekend I made Millionaire Bars.  If it's true that you are what you eat, we're in good shape.  And they are delicious.

Weekly Sweats: Running Gear Roundup

29 miles of running this week and for fun, a roundup of my running gear.

Weekly Eats: Getting My Act Together

A weekly round up: eats, watches, and reads.  I started this week completely unorganized, which has been my standard operating procedure lately, and then got my act together and made some good food.  And watched a bunch of TV.

Weekly Sweats: The Whatever Plan

In this week's recap: 27 miles of running, absolutely no weight lifting whatsoever, my fall racing schedule, and my "whatever" plan for training right now.
