Workouts
In addition to walking one million miles while I was in Calfornia in gorgeous weather, biking season has begun! It kicked off officially in Golden Gate Park, where I rented a Lyft bike and pedaled my heart out one afternoon.
Then I came home and started working on another bike trail. Hubs and I still have 30 miles left on the 100 mile trail that we started last year, but between inclement weather and the craze that is the end of the school year, we haven't been able to find any Couples Biking Time.
Over the weekend I saw a chance to get some By Myself Biking Time, so I got Bikey McBikerson out of the shed and back into action. There is another hike and bike trail that is only 35 miles long (since I do it in out and back sections that means 70 miles total), and I set out at the northern end and got started.
When I reached my planned turnaround point, I felt like I had enough steam to go to the next trailhead, so I did. And that's how this happened:
Watching
On the Seinfeld front, Hubs and I finished season eight. How many seasons of Seinfeld are there, you may ask? Nine, so we're headed into the home stretch.
After I finished The Pitt, I figured that I would check out ER just for funsies. I might be 30 years late to the party, but it is a great show. It's hysterical to see Noah Wyle go from the seasoned ER doc in his 50s to a baby doc in his 20s. Given that I don't have a lot of TV time right now and the show is 15 count 'em 15 seasons long, I think that it is most likely that I watch episodes here and there while I have streaming services for other reasons instead of going all in on it.
Last but not least, I went to the town and then I saw the movie! Juile tipped me off that Lady Bird has a lot of Sacramento locations, so watching it was an exercise in nostalgia for my trip. I would not have gotten the significance of "a house in the 40s" if San hadn't suggested that we drive through that neighborhood on the way to dinner. Hey, early on they describe Sacramento as being "the midwest of California" so no wonder I felt so at home there.
Reading
It is no surprise that here is where we have the most catching up to do. TL;DR all of these books were recommended by Cool Bloggers and all of them hit it out of the park.
I was in a reading dry spell when Nicole wrote about a book called Caroline: Little House, Revisited which is a retelling of the Little House story from Ma's perspective. Say no more, and it was on Libby for the taking.
I don't know what I expected from a Little House retelling, but I was not expecting the voice of the book to be an exact replica of the original. It threw me off for a minute - um if the style is exactly the same shouldn't I just reread Little House? But on something like the second page we get our first encounter with the China Shepherdess and it was like I was back home and I was All In. The story is about the family's first move out west, told according to the known timeline which is a little different than Laura Ingalls Wilder's fictional timeline. No one ever uses the bathroom in all of the Little House books, but Caroline goes into more detail about stuff like this. My verdict is that if you were at all into Little House and you are now an adult, you will probably like this book.
But wait! In the meantime Elisabeth was raving about an Ernie recommendation called Go As A River, which she decribed as "a mashup of The Grapes of Wrath and The Berry Pickers". WHAT???? I needed to read this book immediately if not sooner, so I stopped in the middle of reading her post to check out a copy. Then I hit a busy patch and didn't read for a few days, and when I got back to it I saw that I would have to pause Caroline for River, since River had the earlier due date. I belong to two Libby libraries. One has a two week checkout and the other has a three week checkout.
There are no problems, there are only solutions. I gobbled down Go As A River with pleasure, and then got back to Caroline.
No sooner had I finished Caroline when the next book came in. A while back Kim read a book that was about a woman who had a fetish for plane crashes, with the caveat that it was not a book for everyone. Oh no worry, I knew it was for me!
So look with a name like Sky Daddy...this is basically a quarter life crisis book about a woman working a dead end job who has a thing for planes. And I do mean a thing for planes, in the NSFL (not safe for Lisa) sense. It is the story of what happens when she gets out of her normal routine of flying out of SFO as often as she can get the plane fare in the hopes that she will crash and accepts a friend's invite to a vision board party.
This book was twisted enough and well written enough that it would have been good no matter what but YOU GUYS IT'S SET IN SAN FRANCISCO AND SFO AND I WAS IN SAN FRANCISCO AND FLYING OUT OF SFO!!!
I was about half finished when it was time to leave. Did I read the rest of the book about someone who has a fetish for plane crashes on the plane coming home? Why yes, yes I did. It was the perfect book read in the perfect place.
Again, Sky Daddy is not a book for everyone, but it was a 😻😻😻 book for me.
So what book could possibly be out there that could top Sky Daddy? Well, I'll let you know when I find it but here is the book that I am reading now. The Next Conversation: Argue Less, Talk More is a gem that I learned about from San. It's a book written by someone who knows how to talk: a lawyer. His podcast is very much worth checking out as well. Normally I prefer audio for non fiction, but I knew that it would go in one ear and out the other, so I got the Kindle version so that I could take my time (and some notes).
- The TripIt app as reported by Purple to organize your trip itinerary. All that you do is to email receipts to the app as you book things. It was very handy to have everything in one place.
- Everyone needs a free word game that's kinda like Wordle and doesn't need a lot of explanation. Lesley was the hookup for Waffle.
I play waffle - my Canadian sister and I compare results each night. She usually scores higher than me, as my spelling can become confused. I also do the Waffle Royale and the oneword search and stack down the Waffle creator posts. Fun and fast- I'm not one for big crosswords or getting all the words in spelling bee.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting on Go as a River from the library. All of the delightful bloggers who post book reviews have made my TBR list mighty.
Thankfully I am never without a book for very long thanks to our friends.
DeleteI like the NYT crossword but I also like a really quick game that I can do in a few minutes, and Waffle fits the bill for me! I don't always have the time to fit Spelling Bee in.
I'm sorry things have been so busy at work, but delighted that you managed to squeeze in your trip to San Francisco and visit San and Julie - and send me a postcard! Thank you for that! I have Caroline on my TBR list. I probably won't read the airplane one though! Ha! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYour postcard was waiting for me when I got home! One good postcard turn deserves another.
DeleteI love Waffle! My friend is on a 329 day streak right now. My current streak is 6. I’ve gotten close to 100 I think.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Caroline, and think I’m about ready for a re-read, as it’s been several years. I’m in a dilemma on the audiobook front, I have 7 hours left on my current book (Dream Count) and it is due on Thursday morning, and I checked out Go As a River already and that is due in 11 days and I haven’t started it yet. I should have let the next person have it, but generally it does not take me this long to listen to a book, but there have been SO MANY activities in the last couple of weeks that I just haven’t done it. I should have listened to Go As a River on the drive to and from LA, that would have been smart. But I’ve never listened to a book with someone else in the car before, so I didn’t. I have some serious listening to do, or else I am going to have to bail on Dream Count and come back to it.
It was so fun to have you here and be able to spend some time together. I loved how we had pretty much the same taste in food when we had meals together, that was really handy. And I’m so glad you loved Lady Bird!
Yeah, I don't listen to audiobooks or podcasts when there are other people in the car either. It's just not as much fun.
DeleteWhen I have more than one book and limited checkout time, I stress about finishing the books, but I really don't need to. I'm allowed to return things without reading them and get them other time! Easy to tell someone else to do, and I'm less good about doing it myself.
Sigh, I really did get spoiled by all of the time that we had together last week. Why can't we all live closer?????
Well WE TRIED with the scoping out houses in SF and considering the FiLoLi mansion. Then everyone could live together, or at least vacation together. I like to think of us all living on a cul de sac somewhere, and popping into each others homes like we’re on a sitcom or something.
DeleteWow, a lot of stuff is happening in Birchie world! I read Go As a River a few (?) years ago and enjoyed it so I am glad that you did too! Otherwise I have not read any of the other books on your list. My reading has been not so robust, as my focus has been no so stellar, so I have been finding myself leaning more towards podcasts lately. I wonder if there is a way I can look up how many I have listened to, but I am guessing it is no less than 100 and maybe over 200 so far this year.
ReplyDeleteI also use TripIt, and if you have not tried Travel Spend, it is a good way to track your expenses if you are using a lot of cash. Of course, usually in the US that is not the case, but I have found it handy. It also shows you your spend in real time so that is kind of fun too.
I have three library cards and I had four during the pandemic, and then after that one decided that we had to go in and show ID so I got rid of that one and acquired one in Florida, but then they started charging $30/year for non residents and I decided that three is probably enough. I could technically get a fourth in the county where my parents (and I) live, but do I really need four? Probably not. The FL one was 14 days but my others are all 21 thank goodness.
Back in the pre-Libby days I had four regular library cards plus a university card and I didn't think it was too much. I wasn't reading nearly as much back then, but I was using the library heavily for movies, and each library had different offerings. Thank goodness for streaming!
DeleteI've not heard that saying about meeting the author before now. I don't think I would agree with it. I think I'd be excited to meet an author of a book I've liked. Why not?
ReplyDeleteI have more than one library card, if you count that I have cards that belong to several of my kids. If one has something that's overdue and won't let me check something out - then I'll shuffle till I find one that works.
I do not play Waffle. Mini sends me word games from time to time, maybe it's Wordle? I don't pay attention. I think she sends them to me so that she can feel even better about herself. I'm THAT bad - not at all competitive.
Our high school graduation (I didn't have a kid graduating this year, but several friends did) was also ridiculously cold. It was colder than anticipated when I went out to Tank's graduation and I did a poor job of re-checking weather before we drove out there. I managed, but note to self: recheck the damn weather.
The blogger meet up in California sounds like a great time. I still have to read the posts that Julie and San wrote. I'm behind on things, and I'm blaming May. I'm glad you liked Go As A River. I'm usually the least likely to recommend a book, because I don't read a million books a year. I'm better at choosing books that have already been read by everyone, so this is a first for me. ;)
I would not enjoy word games on a competitive level. Sure I feel smug if I solve a crossword quickly or if I get Wordle in 2, but I've just got too much going on to care how well I do a puzzle.
DeleteThe end of the school year was rough for us! Not because anything bad was happening, but because there was so much going on. Now we just have to wrap up Boy Scouts (one more month).
Good for you for taking that California trip! And you were rewarded with sunshine, steps, and San Francisco biking! I had to laugh at the Lyft vs. Bikey comparison… I know that feeling too well: once you try a smoother ride, it’s hard to go back.
ReplyDeleteAnd YAY for a longest ride!! That solo ride sounds like a proper effort – I hope the next segments go just as strong.
Also, love how you're weaving workouts into life even with the work madness and unpredictable weather. Gold star for keeping it going despite the chaos!
PS: They will never fire you, Birchie.
Yipes, I would never skip workouts no matter what was going on with work.
DeleteUnfortunately I know you are correct that I will not get fired, but with the amount of work demanded on this project that I'm not able to do there is at least a chance! A girl can dream (or wait for the other situation that is keeping me at work to clear up).
What is with the weather???? We had three whole days of sunshine and... less cold, and now it's back to rain in the 50s???? No thank you.
ReplyDeleteDo I need to read Sky Daddy? I don't know. The more you talk about it, the more intrigued I am, but also... perhaps it is a book better enjoyed vicariously?
I totally have more than one library membership. The more libraries the better.
I say yes to Sky Daddy if you want a light and humorous touch on something twisted.
DeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed Go As A River. Maybe I oversold it with the Grapes of Wrath/Berry Pickers, but it did feel like I leaned heavily into that sort of territory.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you had such a wonderful time with bloggy friends, but the work situation sounds positively horrid. Ugh. I know it's a slog right now, and hope something changes to lighten the load :(
Loved the picture of Doggo at the top. Blogging "debt" officially paid off in one fell swoop there!
You did not oversell it. It had shades of both books, and it is an excellent book that was a pleasure to read.
DeleteI need "Work is Something Else" on a t-shirt or mug! I can't wait to hear about your trip! In terms of "if you like the book, don't meet the author", it immediately went deep in my brain with all the thinking I've been doing about how to balance loving a book / show / movie / franchise and then finding out the people who made it are trash humans in ways critical to me and my values, sigh. Sending you solidarity thoughts on the work wildness!!
ReplyDeleteTeam Work Wildness!
DeleteI've spent a bit of time thinking about "the artist is a piece of dirt but the art is great" issue. It comes up quite a lot because I love old movies, which means a lot of people who were...uh...complicated. I don't have a perfect answer, but basically I put more weight on current events. Emil Jannings was the first actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, and he was a Nazi. He is also dead, and presumably if someone is still getting a few pennies when I watch one of his movies they have a different ideology. Kanye West is alive and probably getting a bigger cut if I buy something from one of his brands.
Yes, I want to buy a plane ticket immediately for CA so I can meet Julie and San!!! And, I've never been to San Francisco. Sadly I won't be doing that right now, but if I do, I'll definitely plan to read Sky Daddy on the plane ride back.
ReplyDeleteYou glossed over the graduation! Are you guys sad? Was it fun? Are you looking forward to being empty nesters? You know I'm all about this topic right now.
I'm eagerly awaiting the trip recaps!
Oh man, this spring was so busy that's it's just a relief that school is over. I don't think it's really sunk in that life is about to change for us. Also #2 has been ready to be in college since he was born, so it's a happy time for him.
DeleteI LOVED Go as a River. I read it when it was a new release and it made my best books list. I especially love that it's a debut novel from an author in her 50s! It's never too late to pursue your passions! I love that you know to state when a book is NSFL! I will avoid that book!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading "A Walk in the Park" which is about a through hike of sections of the grand canyon which is about 700 miles long, if I am remembering correctly. I got a bit annoyed with the first section because the 2 hikers went into it so unprepared. I had thought about suggesting it to Kyria before I got started but I think it would capital P Piss her off (it pissed me off but not enough to not keep going). It makes me want to go to the Grand Canyon, though!
Yay for blogger meet ups! And I would be open to meeting the author of a book I loved even if that meant risking not liking the person. I feel like most authors I hear interviewed seem like wonderful people that I'd want to chat with!
I have never heard of waffle... I'm conflicted on whether I should look it up because I already play a ridiculous # of word games...
I did not know anything about the author of Go As A River, but it's very cool that she was a first time author in her 50s! I'd be down for a Grand Canyon hiking books, even if it was a lesson in "what not to do".
DeleteFor me the attraction of Waffle is that it's free and fast. I just couldn't take on a longer word game right now.
haha, Sky Daddy DOES NOT SOUND like it's for me, but I'm so glad you loved it! That trip app sounds interesting - I kind of manually throw things in apple notes. I can't decide if I want an app reading my email like that (though I'm sure Google already does!!!!)
ReplyDeleteI think TripIt is worth a look! I usually rely on emails/notes/spreadsheets, but it was so nice to have it all in one place and to be able to click through to the airline/Airbnb in a hurry. I only had flights, stays, and a few scheduled things to track this time around, but last year I went on a very complicated trip to IL/WI with several things to do each day and it would have been gold for that. And yes with Google fully up to speed on every move that I make, what's the difference in one more app being able to see my travel?
DeleteThat photo of your dog is award-winning. I feel like I know everything I would ever need to know about Doggo now.
ReplyDeleteI've met two authors in person, and it didn't affect me negatively: David Sedaris and Toni Morrison. Having said that, however, I wonder if meeting authors of books I truly cherish and idolize (The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, for example) would change the way I felt about their books (although I know Salinger was definitely ... eccentric). By the way, Toni Morrison is elegant and gracious and incredible.
Thanks for the heads-up on Waffle. I'm all in on Wordle, Spelling Bee, and Connections, thanks to my NYT subscription. I play Wordscapes when I'm really bored, so I could use another wordy pastime.
I'll definitely check out Caroline. Right now, I'm back to my nonfiction and Civil War roots: April 1865: The Month That Saved America by Jay Winik. Excellent writing. And, always, The New Yorker magazine.
Doggo is a girl who knows how to appreciate a sunny spot!
DeleteYou make a good point that I wouldn't really know what to expect from an author. I recently read I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself by Glynnis MacNicol, and even though she wrote about having sex in Paris, she didn't really write about herself, so I don't "know" her or have any expectations for what she would be like. The bloggers that I follow pretty much write about everything except sex, so I do know exactly what they're like when I meet them. It's interesting.
I can't wait to hear about the details of your trip!
ReplyDeleteOMG I have to read Sky Daddy. I must. I MUST FIND THIS IMMEDIATELY.
I've never heard that saying, but it's similar to "never meet your heroes." I have met a few authors though! The first one I ever met was when I was at the Young Writers Conference in grade six, it was the author of Here She Is, Miss Teeny Wonderful, Martyn Godfrey. I still have my signed copy of that book!
Glad you liked Caroline! Right now I'm reading What Are You Going Through, which Suzanne had mentioned, and omg it is so good. It is so good! I don't know if it's for you but wow, is it ever a book for me.
Look, I know it's not Bear or the door knob or balloon animal book, but otherwise Sky Daddy is exactly your speed!
DeleteI feel like it's only a matter of time before I read Sigrid Nunez. I will read The Friend eventually, but I need to work up to it since there is only one way that a "this dog changed my life" book can end.
I have a public library card and access to Libby through my university library access. That means I can have up to 15 Libby holds (10 through the public library, 5 through the university) and I cannot stress to you how I wish I could have DOUBLE THAT NUMBER. Give me more Libby holds!! That is all.
ReplyDeleteI am envious that you got to hang out with J and San, but I am glad to hear they're awesome. I never had any doubt!
More Libby holds for everyone! Actually I've never exceeded the limit, but that just means that I am not living my life right.
DeleteI put a bug in Julie's ear that if she went to Wisconsin it would be worth her while.
No blogging debt! You are in the green, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI have Sky Daddy on hold as an audiobook since Kim says it's good on audio. I'm nervous about it, though. Not sure if it's for me but willing to give it a try!
Go as a River was one of my favorite books of 2024! Such a well-written story.
I'm so glad the trip was a fun one. I can't wait to hear more!
I believe in you! Kim would not steer you wrong.
DeleteHuge congrats to you and your husband on stepson graduating. That is a big accomplishment! And wow on that biking! Great work!
ReplyDeleteAs for word games, I have gotten hooked on Wordflower from LA Times. It's a good brain teaser, though I have yet to fully beat it!
Sounds like a busy week! And a good one.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard the saying "if you liked a book don't meet the author" and don't want to believe it is true. Not that I've met many authors, but the ones I have met were exactly how I thought they'd be.
I am so glad you liked Sky Daddy! It's so quirky and clever!
ReplyDeleteGo as a River still haunts me. Whoa. Amazing book though.
I am so glad you had an amazing trip (boo that you had to work!) and that stepson #2 graduated HS. Congrats!
Thanks for the book (re) recs. Both were on ye olde TBR but I was happy to confirm. Also so glad you had a wonderful trip, were able to celebrate Stepson #2 when you returned home, and that you've gotten some time outside (and, ahem, away from work, of course). Thinking of you, my friend.
ReplyDelete
