Eight is Great: The Eighth Annual Weekly Eats Roundup

Once upon a time in November eight years ago, a recipe blogger decided to start writing a weekly post about what she was eating, her workouts, what she was watching on TV, and what she was reading.  After a year, the blogger decided to write an annual round up post with the best of the year, which became known as "Birchwood New Year".

And so it continues...

Best Things That I Cooked This Year

The best "Fancy" Meal of the Year award goes to Pinch of Yum's crockpot chicken bowls with yellow rice and cilantro pesto.

The best overall dinner recipe of the year award goes to Recipe Rebel's cheesy ground beef and potatoes.

The best "it's cold outside" recipe of the year award goes to Recipe Rebel's cheeseburger soup.

Best "that's not a recipe" recipe of the year: roasted potatoes, broccoli, and chicken sausage bowls.  I roast potatoes in batches and freeze them, and we bulk buy Costco frozen broccoli and chicken sausages so I almost always have the ingredients in the freezer ready to go: 20 minutes in the air fryer for the broccoli, add the chicken sausage after 10 minutes, reheat the potatoes in the microwave.  Bonus points for add-ins like pickled red onion and whatever sauces we have in the fridge.

Best "I'll Have What She's Having" recipes that I stole from other people.  This year we have a tie:

Winner #1: Kim's crunchwraps - the photo that made me drool is here and her reel showing the method is here.

Winner #2: "Boyhouse Enchiladas" from Nicole.  The backstory is that this recipe started as an enchilada recipe and was modified to suit the family's tastes.  Roast sweet potatoes, bell pepper, and black beans in seasonings, and top with salsa and guac.

Best New Breakfast of the Year: Spicy rice paper omelets from the So Easy, So Good cookbook.  The So Easy, So Good cookbook is also the winner of "the only cookbook that I can remember buying this decade" award.

Best New Dessert of the Year: Budget Bytes Eggnog cookies.  Oddly enough zero eggnog is used in this recipe but the cookies are fantastic anyway and have earned a permanent place on my holiday cookie tray.

Best New Kitchen Gadget of the Year: a potato ricer.

Best "I used to have a problem but now I have a solution" tip of the year is regarding canned chipotles in adobo sauce.  It's very rare to need the entire can, so a frequent problem that I was having is using whatever I needed for the recipe that I was making and finding the leftovers months later languishing in the fridge.  Part #1 is to blend the entire can up so that the peppers and sauce are one and store the leftovers in the fridge via The Frugal Girl.  If you need to store them long term, freeze them in one tablespoon portions via Suzanne.  Thanks to these tips I still have the remainder of the can that I opened in January.

Best TV of the Year

The pickings have been slim for this category in recent years, but TV is back in 2025 baby!  Even if only one of these shows was made in 2025.

First off, this year saw the Great Seinfeld Rewatch, which started as a solo project and soon became a Hot Couples TV project.  Doggo joined us for most of the rewatch.

We Were the Lucky Ones was an incredible show that I found to be just a little bit better than the book.

Season Three White Lotus!  Say what you want, I was all in on this one.

Last but not least, I was late to The Gilded Age party, but I'm here now.  I'm currently in season two and taking my time with this one.

Best Books of the Year

Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra.  I adored this short and suspenseful (but not too scary) book about a mother who is alone in the house with her two young children when she becomes aware that someone else is in the house with bad intentions.  She can't get to her phone but she can get to a secret room with her kids to wait the bad guy out.

Shred Sisters by Betsy Learner.  When you're the good sister watching the bad sister get away with everything.

The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters.  I'd heard the buzz on this one when it came out, but decided that I didn't want to read about a missing child and gave it a pass.  I only picked it up after Julie raved about it, and I'm so glad that I did.  This book got me in my feels.

Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom.  I heard about this book on an episode of the Sarah's Bookshelves podcast while I was hiking and pulled out my phone then and there and got it on Libby.  I'd recommend that you get your hands on a copy with just as much haste.

Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery.  This was the spring pick for CBBC and it was a wow.

Sky Daddy by Kate Folk.  The story of a woman who has a fetish for plane crashes.  Weird premise, AMAZING book.  Thank you Kim for putting this on my radar and thank you to the universe for having my Libby hold come in while I was in San Francisco so that I got to finish the book on a plane flying out of SFO (the book is set in SF and the main character flies out of SFO).

Joy Prescriptions: How I Learned to Stop Chasing Perfection and Embrace Connection by Tiffany Moon.  This is a combination memoir/self help book.  The author is a physician who built a successful social media brand and was on Real Housewives, and got to a point where she had to stop doing All The Things but wanted to find a way to do Some of Each Thing.  First of all, she has a fascinating story, but second of all, this was helpful for me to read as I was navigating my way out of the workforce.  Want more info on the book?  I'd recommend the Best of Both Worlds episode where I heard about it.

Best Stuff That I Did This Year

I went places and met people!
After a couple of years of shooting my mouth off on the blog, I did the FIRE thing!  I'm only in week three of early retirement, and so far so good.

That's a Wrap on Year Eight!  Thanks for hanging out with me!  What's on your best of the best list for this year?

  1. Woot woot!!!! I bet Year 8 will be one you'll be glad you summarized -- this is a great recap that touches on so much more than food and TV. You have made so many connections this year, Birchie, and you Did The Thing and retired! What a GREAT year!

Thanks for the reminder about the crockpot chicken bowls. YUM. And for the reminder that I have not yet read Nightwatching, Sky Daddy, or Crow Mary -- all supposedly on my TBR.

Love that you've trained Doggo to do the dishes. Very useful trick. ;-)

    1. Yes, teach your dog to do dishes and you will have HOURS back in your day.

Sigh, life is short and the TBR is long...but I do have intentions of checking out Sophie Hannah in the near future.

  2. Eight years of Birchwood New Year! Nice!
I think you will remember 2025 mostly for the last item on your list - FIRE!!

Also, I like that Sky Daddy coincidence. Goodness me, what are the odds of reading that book on a flight out of San Francisco, where the story is actually set? You couldn't get a better stage than that!

I think "best of the list" this year will mainly be stuff we did: the Boston Marathon in April, the Comrades Ultra in South Africa in June and two multi-day hikes, one in South Africa and the other in Germany/Austria. Such a blast!

  3. This was such a fun summary post!

I loved Nightwatching (which I'm pretty sure I heard about via you), Crow Mary, Blue Castle and The Berry Pickers. And I just went and added Joy Prescriptions to my holds list.

We are having rice and chicken bowls tonight!

    1. Rice and chicken bowls FTW! I think you'll like Joy Rx.

  4. I MADE YOUR LIST!!! That makes me so happy. I love that meal, the "enchiladas." I keep trying to call them "roasted sweet potato, pepper, and black bean wraps" but you know what, they are still enchiladas around here.
SKY DADDY. I actually asked for it for Christmas so I could have it in my full-time collection. What a weird and wonderful book that is. I laughed so much throughout. It was so clever! And weird!
Hmmm that housewife memoir sounds interesting - I have never seen one of those shows, but the premise of the memoir sounds pretty good!

    1. You are my list! We have all kinds of family code names for food, and when something sticks, it sticks.

I'm not a Housewife watcher, so don't be put off by that for a moment. She has a great "hey I'm good at everything and I've made everyone else in my life happy, so now it's my turn" story. Spoiler, she was one and done for Housewives.

  5. What a great year you had! Delicious food, exciting adventures, and retirement! I'm delighted for you, and delighted that I got to come along with you via your blog!

  6. I love this Best Of List. I've avoided reading The Berry Pickers for the same reason you mentioned, but now I think I'll have to pick it up soon.

    1. Yes, you get me! "A child goes missing and everyone's lives are ruined" isn't the most fun premise, but The Berry Pickers made it work.

  7. Great wrap-up. You had a super year, and capping it off with Retirement made it that much moreso.

I am the outlier with The Berry Pickers. I wanted it to be so much more. The characters felt cold and undeveloped to me. It was such a big and emotional plot, but the people in it seemed wooden and one-dimensional as they traversed it.

    1. Outliers are welcome here! I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

    2. I'm Team Nance on The Berry Pickers. That book was booooring and the main character was a snooze. But I did enjoy lots of other books on your list, Birchie, so you haven't been kicked off my list of people I trust for book recs.

    3. You will never be kicked off my Trusted Source Book rec list! Just from memory you gave me Bad City, Mary Jane, Indifferent Stars, Blue Castle, I Who Have Never Known Men, and you kicked off the rereads for ATGIB and GWTW.

Remember when Suzanne wrote the post of 20 potential topics for a guest post on your blog for your 20th anni and one of the topics was "20 books that I disagree with Engie about"? Well, you and I are up to four! Hello Beautiful, MBF, Berry Pickers, and Margo's Got Money Troubles.

  8. Great wrap up! I need to make that pinch of yum recipe. Thanks for reminding me. And I need to make Nicole's tacos but probably just for myself as a bowl meal rather than something in a tortilla. My husband would want some meat it in but I feel like it would be best w/out meat.

My best book of the year is one you abandoned - The Correspondent. I loved it so so so so so so much! But I totally understand why you ditched it.

    1. Normally if I DNF something I don't look back, but I really feel that The Correspondent might be a "it's not you it's me" issue and I'm going to give it another chance, on audio this time. I'm waiting for my Libby hold to come in.

I don't want to say that your husband is wrong, so I'll just say that you are right - Nicole's enchilada's do not need meat.

  9. This was a little trip down memory lane! I remember those crunch wraps, and the eggnog cookies (I actually looked at the recipe to see how easy it would be to vegan-ize those... not so easy).
You reminded me that I want to read Sky Daddy and Crow Mary. And... did you get to the end of Seinfeld?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think you're right about the eggnog cookies - replacing the butter with vegan butter is no problem, but I'm not sure if they would taste the same without the egg. Well, luckily there are a ton of other vegan cookie recipes out there.

Yes we finally finished Seinfeld! It was right after I got back from NS, so fairly recently.

  10. I think I'm too new to your blog to have seen these year in review posts and this is so fun, and comprehensive. I've already copied the ground beef and potato dish into my google docs. It looks gluten free!

    1. It seems so strange to think that we are "new" friends. I feel like we've been reading each other forever. Well, happy year 1 of many to us!

  11. What a year you had! I’m so glad you came to CA, and that we got to hang out and meet up with San!

I love Nicole’s enchiladas, also as a bowl with quinoa, I’m really glad you wrote about them.

I’m glad you loved The Berry Pickers, I know it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Books that come to mind for me are The Correspondent (I know you DNF, no shame), Orbital, and I Who Have Never Known Men. I just bought The Correspondent for a birthday gift.

    1. I'm glad that I came to CA too! I can't wait to go back!

I know that The Berry Pickers didn't work for everyone, but it was a cup of tea that I would have missed out on if not for your review. That's why we're here: to tell everyone about the good stuff.

    2. Birchie, you didn't like Orbital? I LOVE THAT BOOK. And I really liked Hello, Beautiful as well. I recommend it to a lot of people, including men.

  12. What a cool idea - I just thought this seemed like a strange time for a yearly round-up post and then realized oh wait....
A friend of mine recommended Pinch of Yum's Coconut Curry Salmon recipe, and I've been a fan of the site ever since. That cheeseburger soup also looks amazing.
I watch The Gilded Age with a friend, and we have been trying to coordinate watching season three for a few months now.
Recent favourite books are The Proof of my Innocence by Jonathan Coe, The Names by Florence Knapp and The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami. I did also love The Blue Castle.

    1. You've heard of the school year and the lunar year, and now you know about the Birchwood Year;-)

I love Gilded Age so much that I'm being very precious with it and taking it slow, but I want so badly to sit down and binge it.

  13. I am late to enjoy this wrap up but what a year - a crunch wrap and 4 amazing trips?! Win.

I haven't read any of your best of books. I haven't watched seinfeld either. I haven't had that chicken sausage bowl but I really want one now.

Also, I love that you started your blog in November and do a recap in november. It's like you get a jump on the new year with a new blog year...

    1. You're never late to a blog post!

I'd recommend starting with the chicken sausage bowl and working your way through the rest from there!

  14. That was a great recap. I am drooling over all your dinners (the crunchwrap looks so good!) and well, you've done a lot of traveling and meeting up with awesome people (including me, yay! :)). You've been definitely following through with quite a few things.
