Weekly Round Up: Thanksgiving and A Second Chance

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  In this edition we'll talk about Thanksgiving and leftover management (nailed it!), dish on early retirement life, I'll grouse about how illness is messing with my workouts and sleep, and in reading I'll tell you about the DNF that I gave a second chance to with astounding results.

Thanksgiving Recap

We had Thanksgiving at our house this year, and the guest list was our in-town relatives, who are SIL#3 and SIL#4 and their families.  Including us, that was three families of four hoomans and one dog each for a total of 12 people and 3 dogs.  Do I mind hosting Thanksgiving?  Not one bit!  It's easier to be at home, we clean our house anyways so it's not really any extra work.

At this point we're pros at dividing and conquering the menu.  The host house makes the turkey, and just for the benefit of anyone who is new, I cannot stand turkey so Hubs is our House Turkey Chef.  I just provide minor assistance with getting it in the oven.

Hubs - turkey

Me - gravy (this is a small batch recipe which I 4x for a big meal like this)

SIL#3 - mashed potatoes and stuffing

SIL#4 - her world famous green bean casserole, veggies, and dinner rolls

Me - desserts and a couple of bottles of wine

The only thing that went wrong is that I bought the turkey on Monday instead of over the weekend since retired people do not grocery shop on weekends, and it wasn't still a bit too frozen, so we had a thawing delay.  We were planning to start the turkey at 1:00 to be ready at 6:00 and we didn't get it in the oven until 2:00.

Dessert wise, in past years I normally make an apple pie and a chocolate chip cookie cake.  I've noticed that single serving desserts tend to move better than big servings (i.e. if I make cupcakes they all get eaten and if I make a cake just a few slices get taken), so I decided to make apple pie bars and chocolate chip cookies.  They were good, but I got the feeling that for a special meal like Thanksgiving people like the presentation of the pie, so I'll go back to that next year.

I made Jo Cooks Apple Crisp Bars without the caramel sauce since that sounded messy and served them with vanilla ice cream.  Pro tip: the leftovers make a dope breakfast.

At the end of the night I bartered leftover turkey for the leftover green bean casserole, which is my favorite TG menu item.  That left us with a manageable amount of turkey.  I took a squint at Two Peas and Their Pod Chicken Pot Pie and used that as inspo to repackage the turkey and gravy into a turkey pot pie.

Mind you, that was for Hubs and the boys, because as mentioned I just can't do turkey.  I got a couple of dinners out of the leftover green bean casserole with a chicken sausage on the side to make it into more of a meal.

I froze the rest of the turkey and will bring it back in another pot pie for the other members of the house soon.

Workouts

Stepson #1 got a nasty virus that he gave to me which I gave to Hubs.  It's just a cold, but it's one that takes forever to fully go away.  I'm almost back to normal, but the key word is almost.

Side effects are that I pulled a muscle in my chest from coughing so I can't do any kind of upper body exercise right now, and for some reason both Hubs and I have had terrible sleep, so my workout mojo is nonexistent.  My main form of fitness has been dog walking, and that's just fine until my body figures out how to get back to normal.

Our most exciting dog walk of the week was on Black Friday.  Where I live we had a little bit of snow, but just a few miles north of us they got hammered.

I'd taken Doggo to a park in the "few miles north of us" zone during the week (pix in last week's post), and wanted to show it to Hubs.  We were not expecting the six inches of snow that the park had gotten, and no one was out so we could barely see the trail.  Those conditions made a simple one mile dog walk into quite the workout.  As you know, dogs love snow and Doggo is no exception.  At one point she started doing the worm in the snow drifts, but stopped as soon as I thought to get my camera out.  Sigh.

After the walk Hubs saw that the park welcome center had a fire going in their fire place, and started to walk in.  I said, "hey, we can't take Doggo in there", but the park manager had already seen us and said, "no come in, we love dogs here".  So we got to warm up by the fire and we had a great conversation with her about rescue dogs.

Speaking of dogs, I have to tell you about the best dog toy that I got recently.  Doggo loves broccoli, and it was time to refresh her chew bones, so I couldn't resist the broccoli Nyla bone.

Watching

I've been plowing through the Alfred Hitchcock movies, but since I'm being very strict about watching them in reverse order I had to take a break to wait for a library hold to come in.

I was very taken by this WSJ write up on work movies, and I found myself lining up a handful of 80s work movies.  Over the weekend Hubs and I watched Wall Street, which I had never seen, and very much enjoyed.

Reading

I finished This American Woman: A One in a Billion Memoir by Zarna Garg and I would like to suggest that you run and do not walk to get your hands on it.  This is one where I really think audio is the way to go, because her voice is so good.

The next thing to tell you is that I am Team DNF.  If a book isn't working for me, I'm comfortable making the call sooner rather than later so that I can swap it out for a book that does work.

As I reported a few weeks ago, I picked up The Correspondent because everyone else on the planet is reading it and found it to be a slog.  I just couldn't figure out who was writing which letter or get any sense of a plot, so I ditched it at the 30% mark.

But...this was the rare case where I felt that it might be me and not the book, so I gave it another go, but on audio this time.  I usually don't listen to fiction on audio because my mind drifts a lot and I always figured that I would lose the plot.

Guess what?  The format made all the difference.  I LOVE THIS BOOK.  For whatever reason I wasn't picking up the connections in the written format - that Sybil wrecked her car because she is losing her vision, or the reason she got upset about being gifted a 23 and Me style DNA test is because she was adopted.  I get it now and I'm on board with the hype!  I'm very sad that I only have five more hours in the audio book.

I think that I will end up listening to more audio books now in retirement (more hiking and more travel time =. more listening time), so I can see adding more fiction into the mix.

Before We Go - Two Investing Articles That I Thought Were Interesting

I only have a WSJ subscription because I got a special deal that's $4 a month, but man they really killed it this week.  Here are two similar but not the same articles about investing that I thought were fun.  Go kids go! [though maybe skew things more toward index funds instead of individual stocks]

Peace Out!  I'm headed out of town on a quick trip for the rest of the week - see you on the other side!

  1. Your Thanksgiving setup sounds efficient! 12 peeps, 3 dogs and 1 turkey - perfect! The thawing delay is a classic "retired people grocery shopping privilege" coming back to bite you. Did you manage to catch up on the 1 hour delay?
The snow walk sounds like quite a workout! Of course Doggo did the worm until a camera appeared. But so nice that you could all cuddle up by the fireplace at the welcome centre!

Also, thanks for the two WSJ articles! I'll have a look at them now!

    1. The #1 rule of turkey cooking is that it always takes longer than advertised. Dinner was a bit late but we were all hanging out and chatting so no one minded.

  2. I get a free subscription to the WSJ at work. They block the comments but that is good for my mental health. Ha. I try to avoid reading comments so as not to lose more faith in humanity.

I am so glad that you are enjoying The Correspondent! I heartily recommended it to my mom and SIL on Thanksgiving!

Your Thanksgiving sounded wonderful! Ours was smaller this year. We only had one table of adults and one of kids. But it was really nice and the boys got to see 3 of their cousins.

  3. Like you, I rarely listen to things on audio but I did for both Heartwood and The Correspondent and I know I enjoyed both more because of it. Having the different voices narrating the different characters really helped me keep things straight!!!

It is so frustrating how long certain bugs hang on. Sigh. The silver lining is you don't have to battle feeling miserable physical and feeling miserable emotionally because of work?? Small blessings!

Love Doggo's toy. How goes the counter surfing lately?

    1. Her counter surfing is on point! It follows a very predictable pattern: she doesn't try to countersurf for as long as it takes for the hooman to relax our guard, and then she goes in for the kill. Her last big triumph was a frosted brownie a few weeks ago. My current strategy is to always place an item in front of food if I have to turn away from the counter.

  4. Oh THANK GOODNESS. I am so very relieved and happy that The Correspondent is working for you on audio. That's how I listened to it, and it was SO GOOD. The voice actors are pretty great and I think it really helps to differentiate the voices of the letters.

Those apple pie bars look magical and I love that they double as breakfast. Adding them to my Must Bake list.

    1. Me too! I finally get in on all the hype!

      Enjoy the apple pie bars.

  5. You pulled a muscle coughing? Ai-yi-yi. I had a friend who broke a rib when she had pneumonia. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE.
The Correspondent is next on my list! I just have to finish the one I have right now. Which...I don't want to slag on the author since she's from Calgary. So. Read between the lines there. Anyhoo. I will report back from The Correspondent. I am a bit nervous because there is so much buzz and everyone loves it and I'm worried this is going to be one of those Where The Crawdads Sing things where everyone loves it and I'm left thinking...well, I guess you can figure what I think. But I do love an epistolatory format so I will probably enjoy it. (probably! eeep!)

    1. I have no concerns at all that you will love The Correspondent. I can pick up what you're putting down about the book that you're reading now. Sigh, I guess it does take a bit more than being from Calgary to write a good book.

You have two friends who broke ribs from coughing in pneumonia. It was 20 years ago and SO PAINFUL.

  6. I was just about to come in and talk about the time I had pneumonia and broke two ribs and tore all my intercostal muscles and it took literal YEARS before I could cough or sneeze without pain. And I still grab my right side when I cough. ANYWAY. Rest up and don't let it turn into pneomonia.

I haven't whined about this on my blog, but I'm sure I will soon enough. We got ten inches of snow over the weekend and then it snowed AGAIN yesterday for like half an inch and that half an inch messed up all the roads. But it's beautiful and Hannah loves it and who can really complain? (Me. It's me. I can complain.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes you are allowed to complain and you should!!! And yes you are also allowed to enjoy Hannah's delight in the snow. The two are not exclusive.

You win for worst outcome of a cough. It's an award that no one wants.

  7. Hooray- glad you ended up liking The Correspondent. I never do audio, but I can see how it was really good that way.
Sounds like you guys have nailed down the Thanksgiving logistics. We do all the cooking- which leaves our house kind of messy, but then again it's only the four of us so we don't care. I would find it really hard to host a big dinner.
That cold sounds HORRIBLE. But glad you're feeling better, and off for another trip! I can't wait to hear all about it.

    1. Have you read The Correspondent yet? I can't remember. Anyway, I have 2.5 hours to go and it's epic.

You're right that it would be so much more work if we were cooking the entire dinner. We're just cooking a few dishes and everyone else brings their stuff in their own serving dishes and takes it home afterwards. Dang, we really do have a good system.

  8. Sounds like your Thanksgiving was perfect, and that potpie from the leftovers looks delicious. I love your sweet Doggo! Have a great trip. :)

  9. Uh oh, I bought the physical copy of The Correspondent for my StepMom for her birthday. I listened to it and LOVED it. I hope her experience with the physical book is different than yours.

I have a kick ass leftover turkey chili recipe on my blog if you’re so inclined, though if your family prefers the pot pie, why mess with it, right? It’s beautiful even if it’s not your jam.

I love Doggo’s broccoli toy! We are all sick here, though the coughing hasn’t gotten to the point of pain yet. Enjoy your trip, glad you’re feeling better!

    1. Get well soon! I'm sure that your stepmom will have a better experience with the book - as far as I know I'm the only one who couldn't follow along.

  10. I love Doggo's broccoli toy. Very fitting. I don't think I ever saw Wall Street either. Maybe we'll watch that one of these days when we can't figure out what to watch. My side was never into pie, but Coach's side would lose their everlasting minds if pie was not made available. A dessert that doubles as breakfast is great to have on hand. Hope your travels are fun and relaxing.

  11. Oh - AND I have the Zarna Garg book checked out of the library right now.

  12. I learned far, far, FAR too late in my life the glory that is the DNF. I'm talking like...maybe less than 10 years ago? And I have been reading for over 60 years. I used to think that I had to finish every single page, paragraph, sentence, and word of every damn book, even if it was killing me with its lousiness. I. know.

    And now I am free!

I'm a big fan of roast turkey, but an even bigger fan of turkey pot pie. And turkey gravy. We have Thanksgiving at my eldest son's now, but I still buy a smaller turkey and roast one anyway a week or two later.

I have The Correspondent on deck. No idea when I'll get to it; my reading is sporadic right now. Tough to concentrate.

The broccoli nylabone sent me to Google immediately. I found it, but it is not broccoli flavored, is it--bacon, right? And for dogs UP TO 50 lbs? I am disappointed because Zydrunas the Granddog is 75 lbs and adores broccoli (but it gives him hideous farts).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it's bacon flavored! I never thought about the 50lb weight limit before, but that means that Stepdog wouldn't have been able to have them either. Without looking at the packaging I wouldn't have hesitated to give one to her (if I had known about such things back then - sorry Steppie, you missed out).

Doggo has outgrown her taste in most veggies except for broccoli. We eat a ton of Costco frozen broccoli and I give her the smaller pieces as I'm cooking. When she sees the broccoli bag come out of the freezer she gets very excited.

  13. That Turkey Pot Pie looks divine. Retired people don't grocery shop on the weekends! I'm with you on that, unless I'm desperate which would mean I'm out of coffee.

    1. Actually Costco was pretty packed when I was there on Monday afternoon so it seems like there might be a lot of retired people where I live.

  14. I hope you're feeling better and better. A couple of years ago, I pulled a muscle from coughing. It was sort of abdominal/rib related. It took so long for it to heal. I shudder thinking about it, and I feel so sorry for you! Your turkey pot pie and your apple bars look amazing. I'm laughing that Doggo loves broccoli! The broccoli nylabone is so fun!

    1. It's a fine line on whether dog toys are designed for dogs or their humans. This is one where everyone wins.

The muscle pull is still acting up nearly two weeks later. It's better, but not gone. Sigh.

  15. Ugh. Everybody’s sick right now - so, feel better soon, friend. And don’t spread your germs ;)

It sounds like your Thanksgiving was a great success, even if you got the bird into the oven later than you hoped. I love that everyone pitched in and that you had leftovers. Leftovers are the best (we had bread dumplings for three days and I loved it).

  16. I am glad you are better but UGH that pulled muscle sounds rough. I hope you are back to 100% soon.

Love the broccoli chew toy! 😆

Thank you for the book recs! I added both to my Libby!

  17. Ooh, I just finished an audiobook today and want to start a new one tomorrow, so I may try The Correspondents on audio since you loved that format so much. I've been waiting to read it, but this might be the push I need!
