Weekly Round Up: Same Time, Next

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  This was a week of "same time, next [year/week]"

Eats

Same time, next year! The big highlight in this week's eats was that we had a big family party to celebrate a certain stepson's birthday.

I couldn't think of a better idea than an exact copy of last year's party.  Same taco bar, same ice cream cake. The only difference is that instead of cooking up the taco meat in the crockpot like last year, I figured it wouldn't be that big a deal to just cook it on the stove like normal and put it in the crockpot afterwards to keep warm.  On a related note, if you're wondering what's for dinner this week, it's leftover tacos.

Workouts

Same time, next week!  I did week 2 of Caroline Girvan's Epic III.  It was more upper body focused, so I was also able to get in three sessions of the Peak Fitness workout as my cardio finisher this week.

So far all of the Epic III workouts have been hard but in a good way.  I think it's a combo of being harder plus that I'm skewing toward heavier weights.

Watching

Random YouTube videos while working on this beauty.  It's puzzle season.

Reading

I'm still munching on Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister and I'm deliberately taking it slow because it's that good.  I just want to relax and keep it going for as long as I can.

I feel like EVERYONE has read this book and I'm the last to the party, but just in case, the premise is that a woman sees her teenage son coming home one night, and has the sense that something's wrong.  The next thing she knows, something is very wrong, because her son stabs a man on the street to death.  The police are called, it's obviously very shocking and traumatic, and the next thing she knows, she wakes up but instead of it being the next day, it's the day before the murder.  Time is running in reverse.  Now she just needs to (1) figure out what's going with her son and (2) figure out what's happening to her.  I was having trouble getting my head around this description, but once I picked up the book, it's totally "yep, I believe it, and I'm on the journey with her to figure out what's happening".  My standard MO for a book like this is to savor it until the point where the story takes over and I can't wait to find out what happens next so I start binging it.  But until then I'm playing it cool and taking my time.

See you back here, same time, next week

  1. Don't change a winning team! Nice job, Birchie!
That plot sounds a bit complicated, but intriguing. Looking forward to seeing you same time, same place next week! :-)

  2. That puzzle is making me yearn for fall! It feels like we get like six months of winter and only three weeks of fall!

I wish Caroline Garvin used somewhat softer names for her workouts. Iron, Epic, Fuel. Why can't they just be Clouds, Rainbows, and Unicorns? It just seems so intimidating!

    1. I don't think that six months of winter is an exaggeration. I've spent the week daydreaming about driving somewhere down south and renting an airbnb for a week just to escape winter. If it wasn't for the fact that the rest of the family needs to be here for school and boy scouts I'd make that a reality in a heartbeat.

  3. Tacos are the best party food. The best anytime food, honestly. What do you put on your taco and what kind of shell do you use (if you use a shell)? I love how differently people put theirs together. (For ground beef tacos, I prefer a hard corn shell. I coat the inside of the shell with hot sauce, sprinkle in a little cheese, add meat, then onions, then lettuce. Sometimes I will dip the taco in sour cream if I'm feeling fancy.)

Glad you are enjoying Wrong Place Wrong Time! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

    1. Ooh I like the idea of coating the shell with hot sauce and I would never have thought of that. I do meat in the bottom, cheese next, then salsa & hot sauce, lettuce & tomatoes, and then either sour cream or guac on top. At that point if it still fits in the shell then I know that I've done it wrong.

  4. I love that puzzle! Did I tell you I bought my husband a puzzle board for Christmas? GAME CHANGER. It has little drawers to separate the pieces AND it has a raised edge so it is almost totally Rex-proof. I love puzzle season.

    1. Yes, you did and I approve! Mine is just a board that covers up so that I can slide it under the couch when I'm not working on the puzzle.

  5. I just today finished 'Wrong Place Wrong Time'. I don't remember where I heard of it, if it was here on your blog, or maybe at 'Life of a Doctor's Wife', but I really enjoyed it! I listened to it via Audible.

    1. I feel like EVERY SINGLE BLOGGER that I follow has read it in the last month so it's more a case of "where haven't I heard about this book?" I'm still in "take it slow" mode and I'm savoring every single drop.

  6. I don't know how I'm just reading this post (other than the fact I've been very distracted this week.) I haven't read that book, but I guess I should. It sounds great.
I'm laughing at Engie's comment about the names of the CG workouts. I'm not sure I would like Rainbows and Unicorns, but they do sound intimidating. Especially when she names Day 2 of Tempo week "Brutal Leg Day." Oh, I looked at Day 1 of Epic III and it actually frightened me... but I'll do it soon. I'm planning to do one or two of her workouts a week on my non-gym days.

    1. Now that I've finished week three, I feel like there is a pattern of the Monday and Tuesday workouts being super hard but super rewarding, and the rest of the week is "normal" level. So I think the Monday and Tues workouts would be a great compliment to your gym days.
