Weekly Round Up 1 of 2: The Great Catch Up

A weekly round up: eats, workouts, watches, and reads.  I've got a lot of stuff to catch up on, so let's split this up into two posts to keep it manageable.  Today I'm going to tell you about our winter getaway and the dog, and then I'll come back tomorrow with food, workouts, movies, and books.

The Great Winter Getaway of 2024

Last time I left off with the teaser that there were plans for us to get up to no good.

On Valentine's Day Hubs and I got up at 4 AM to do this:

So that we could return to our natural habitat and do this:

That's right, for the first time since 2019, Hubs and I put winter on pause and spent a long weekend somewhere warm.

Wait you're saying...didn't you guys just get a puppy?

Why yes we did.  This vacation was scheduled before Doggo came along, and was a part of the conversation about whether we should adopt her or not.  The shelter said that she would be fine, and sure enough she was.  We boarded her at our vet, and while we were being beach bums she got hands on attention, lots of games, and time with other dogs.  It was a good weekend for all parties concerned.  But more about the dog in a minute.

Resort Life

We stayed at an adults only, all inclusive resort in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.  SIL#1 and family went to the same place a few years ago, so we copied them.  We had our eye on the place in early January, and then on Blue Monday they did a 50% off sale, and we made our move and decided that 50% off meant that we needed the swim up room instead of the normie room.  Can I just say that I didn't know that Blue Monday was a thing and now that I do it will be my preferred shopping day for winter vacations?

The reason that I'm not saying where it was is that "all inclusive" included a very bizarre sales pitch for the resort's time share.  The staff spent two hours explaining why their loyalty club was not a time share, but Hubs and I are a bit thick, and our tiny brains just couldn't pick up on the difference.  In the end we walked out, had a good laugh, and spent the rest of our vacation on the beach as God intended.

You know, in my everyday life I don't need a butler to take care of my every last need, but for a long weekend with my boo, I sure don't mind it.  We went from temperatures of 30F to 30C and yes yes yes there was a cold snap and a storm at home while we were gone and I indulged in some very unseemly Shadenfreude and relished every Facebook post that I saw from home bemoaning the storm.

Hubs and I took up a very strict schedule:

  • I usually wake up before Hubs so as soon as I woke up each morning I hit up the resort coffee bar and puttered around the beach with my coffee.  That's where I was the day that I saw Resort Cat lounging by the pool.
  • Once Hubs woke we met up and went to the breakfast buffet.
  • While at breakfast we debated the merits of starting our day at the beach or at the pool.
  • Whichever location we decided, we periodically switched between beach and pool.
  • 11 AM seemed like the correct time for our first margarita of the day.
  • We had lunch when we felt like it and additional beach cocktails throughout the day as needed.
  • Hubs worked out twice and I worked out once.  I did the Cool Blogger's 30/12/3 workout but struggled converting MPH to KPH.  3 MPH is just under 5 KPH, but that felt really fast.
  • Each night we ate at a different resort restaurant.  There was steak, there was surf n'turf kebabs, there was salmon, and there was a seafood pasta.  Everything was to die for.
  • We made the rookie mistake that Nicole (HI NICOLE!) warned us about and forgot to bring sunscreen and I forgot a beach hat.  We paid a king's ransom at the resort store for these items but it was worth it not to get sunburn.  Sigh, you live you learn.
  • Yay US Netflix is accessible in the Dominican Republic so we continued our Seinfeld binge in the evenings.

Anyways, this was not my normal Rust Belt Travel adventure, and I'm OK with that.   Hubs is on notice that he is not allowed to let another five years elapse between now and our next winter getaway.

It's also worth noting that in recent years I have come to dread flying.  It's expensive, airports are crappy, I've had 100% flight delays in recent years, but what really roasts me is that for some reason I've become afraid of flying.  Logically I know it's safer than driving, and in my younger days I loved to fly, but something has happened over time that has me all squirrely every time I step on a plane.  However, for this trip the flights were seamless.  No unpleasantness at the airport, no delays and the flights came in a bit early both ways, and minimal bumps in the air.  Baggage claim ran smoothly and quickly.  And wowza, the flight even had free wifi.  Flying was practically a pleasant experience.

Dawg Life

Someone is growing into quite the big girl.  There's no way to tell how big Doggo will get - on the one hand she might not get much bigger, or she might double her weight and get to a more traditional German Shepherd size.  The shelter told us that she was 25 pounds, but at her first vet visit three weeks ago she clocked in at 21.  On her follow up for her vaccinations this week girlfriend was tipping the scales at 29 pounds.  Her face is starting to catch up to her ears, and her legs are a mile long.

Wins of the week:

  • Doggo had a blast at Doggy Boarding School and picked back up her life with us without missing a beat.
  • We had our first "real" dog walk around the block. Doggo hasn't had any leash training, but she's picking it up by instinct.  Our yard isn't fully fenced, so every time she's outside she's on the leash.
  • Doggo is doing very well around other dogs.  She met our neighbor's dog through the fence and has had some encounters on walks.  We've had a few instances where other dogs have lost their minds around her, but she's taken it in stride and hasn't reacted back at the dogs.
  • Hubs gave her a bath and she was very calm.  Stepdog hated baths so Doggo's calmness threw us for a loop.
  • Sniff, we're starting to have a bit more freedom and she's slightly less hands on.  She doesn't need to go outside as frequently. We're comfortable leaving her alone in our back room/kitchen for 5-10 minute stretches.  She has fewer spells of "puppy crazies".  Don't get me wrong, she still takes up the bulk of our waking hours but she's just less of a handful.  I've heard that puppies go through "teenage" spells where they revert back, and I know that will happen to us, but as of right now pup life is good.

We've got a session with our dog trainer this week and we'll figure out where to go with her training from here.

That's all for now.  I'll be back soon with food, workouts, TV, and looooots of books.

  1. The beach vacation sounds wonderful! I have not done that in a dog's years, as I mostly go towards active vacations, but I do love a good lie-on-the-beach-and-read vacation! I am so glad that you had fun and that the food was so good. I love seafood and goodfood and food!

Doggo is so cute; she has weird non-German Shepheard spots on her paws; do you know what mix she is or is it just German Mutt-Shep? Sorry if you already talked about this, but my brain is useless these days!

    1. I'm with you in that right now I mostly want to explore new places for vacation...but once in a while I want to be pampered on the beach.

We don't know what else is in Doggo besides German Shepherd but we got a doggy DNA test so we'll be finding out soon. She has white toes and patches of white on her chest, as well as that delicious caramel swirl throughout her coat. We're very curious to find out!

  2. So happy for you, Birchie!! I bet that felt good! Yes, indeed, this needs to happen more often.
I knew of Blue Monday but I didn't know that there were now specials (trust the Corporate World to create yet another Consumer Frenzy opportunity...). But for disciplined, soon-to-be-FIREes, this is just the thing. Well done!
I would have even listened to two sales pitches to get that beautiful getaway at 50%!

    1. I can be very consumerist for a 50% off sale! It was worth every penny.

  3. Birchy, as soon as I read your itinerary for your beach trip, I thought "we could be travel buddies" because that kind of schedule (minus the workout for me, I don't workout on vacation!) is exactly my kind of schedule! I love a relaxing beach holiday. I think it was 2017 when we started to go to Dreams/ Secrets and I wonder if yours was that - I know they do push their "club" a lot. However, the resorts are amazing. I'm glad your flights went well.
The Doggo update is great too - we are leaving for Vegas in a couple of weeks and then we have two weeks away in April/ May, and Rexie is going to be boarded. We have boarded him twice before but our last trip my son was home and not working for a week so it's been a while, and I am always nervous. ALWAYS. But of course he will be fine! Just like Doggo was fine! She's getting so big. Puppies grow so fast.

    1. It wasn't Secrets but that's my goal! I'm in the process of stockpiling Hyatt loyalty points through my credit cards and from what I understand I can redeem them at Secrets - I just couldn't figure it out in time for this trip. So someday maybe we'll find ourselves on a posh beach getaway at the same time in the same place! Now that would be the Ultimate Cool Bloggers Meetup.

We definitely want Doggo to spend time away from us so that she gets socialized around other people and dogs. Stepdog spent a lot of time at babysitters before she came to us, and she was the friendliest dog. Until Doggo's house training is 100% she'll stay at our vet, but once she's got it down I want to find her a local babysitter so that our trips will be fun for her as well. Ultimately she'll stay with the boys' mom, but that won't be an option until she's old enough to by herself during the day. I'm also hoping to take her on some short trips. I've got plans for this dawg!

    2. OMG CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE!!! Would that ever be amazing. *keeps Birchy updated on all future Secrets plans, just in case*

  4. Yay, a Resort Cat! This sounds like such a wonderful, relaxing getaway. Your description of gradually becoming more fearful of flying with age is so familiar to me. I hate flying and have to take anti-anxiety medication just to get on a plane. So glad that aspect of your trip went smoothly.

Doggo is getting so big! I am delighted to hear that her vacation went well, too. That's awesome. What a good feeling to know that you can board her without problems.

    1. Believe me, we did have Bad Dog Parent guilt that the boarding would somehow be traumatic for her or that she would forget us. Then we picked her up and found a happy dog and the staff loved getting to play with a puppy.

  5. Oooh, how exciting! Your vacation sounds amazing. I can go either way on vacations- sometimes I want to explore and have fun adventures, but also I LOVE pure relaxation (although come to think of it, I haven't had a vacation like that in a long time.) I had to laugh at "Blue Monday"- I never heard of that but, yes! I think the third Monday in January probably IS the most depressing day of the year.
Love the photos of Doggo!!! It sounds like everything is going great. I'll bet coming home to her took the sting out of returning from your tropical paradise, a little.

    1. It was so good to come home to her! I think it would have been harder to come back if we'd had no dog.

  6. DOGGO!! Such a good girl. I didn't realize she was so tiny. I bet she ends up 40-50 pounds. That's the perfect size for a dog!! What a good girl that she did well at boarding. It's actually probably a good idea to get her used to that sort of thing so you don't have to stress about what to do with her on future vacations.

    1. We'll definitely do some amount of babysitting and doggy day care to get her used to people and other dogs. I think it's just a good idea in general.

My sense of dog size is totally out of whack. Our neighbor's dog is much smaller than Stepdog, but once I saw her and Doggo together, now Neighbor Dog is a giant. Doggo's proportions are a little skewed so sometimes she really does look like a large cat. She has those large pointy ears, that long tail, and a stripey pattern in her fur that almost looks tabby like at times. And she curls up and sits in my lap. It's confusing - but delightful. I hope that she'll still be a lap dog when she's a big girl.

  7. Oh this all sounds so lovely! What a perfect vacation itinerary. And all the jazz hands that Doggo enjoyed the boarding experience.

Doggo is gorgeous. What else is there to say on this matter. GORGEOUS!

  8. I am glad the vacation was so great and that flying was too (and that doggo did so well while you were gone)! I am super confused about why they cornered you to try to do a sales pitch for their club. Is that part of staying there? How annoying. Glad you walked away membership free!

I had no idea Blue Monday was a thing! TIL!

Doggo is so pretty and catching on so fast. I love reading it!

    1. It's really amazing how she's grown and adapted to doing what she needs to do without much training. I've had kittens before but this is my first time with a puppy.

    1. If I remember correctly the weather back home was GREAT when we went in 2019. But even so it was nicer down south!

  10. I love a good relaxing vacation, though also love being busy and seeing things. Yours looks perfect! I'm not sure why, but flying has become much more fraught for me as well. Landing and taking off mostly, just not fun. I don't need to medicate, but I like it better if I can hold someone's hand.

We used to leave Mulder with family while traveling, and the last time it made me nervous. He was with my in-laws, and they're getting older, and I worried he would get out and they wouldn't be able to get him. I'm good at worrying and catastrophic thinking. One time, we went to a wedding out of town, and all of our usual dog sitting family was there, so we had to board him. I cried when I dropped him off, I felt so guilty. He had a GREAT time, and the woman who took care of him sent us pictures and it was all great. Whew. So I guess that is what we will do with any future dogs we have.

    1. I'm not a dog expert, but I think that they enjoy the "vacation" of getting to stay in a new home as much as we enjoy getting to travel. It was hard to drop her off but so sweet to pick her up and hear that she'd had a good time.

  11. Oh a beach getaway sounds amazing. For some reason, I thought I remembered that you didn't (like to) fly... but here you're flying to the beach and for good reason. I think you did it right! ;)

And Doggo seemed to have survived JUUUUST fine. She's so gorgeous.

    1. Correct, I don't like to fly in general but this flight just happened to be a good experience. Hopefully there will be more like it to come.

  12. Beach getaways like that are my FAVORITE. I've been doing more active vacations lately and I need something more chill like your vacation soon.

I've never heard of Blue Monday!

Don't ever read anything by TJ Newman - she writes some very intense airplane thrillers!

  13. Your beach getaway sounds amazing and it sounds like a carbon copy of what we did in December 2022. We did some pool exercise classes and that was the extent of our exercise. And I got up before my husband every day and would sit on the beach with my fancy coffee and just marvel at the sites and soak up all that delicious humidity.

I am glad that Doggo did well in your absence! And that she is gaining some independence. They grow up so fast!!!

  14. Oh, what a wonderful getaway for you and your boo. I have such travel goals and I keep getting sucked in to... more work. Sigh. You're my inspiration, Birchie. Goals, for sure.

Doggo is, of course, a rock star (a dog star?). That is fantastic that she is growing and gaining weight so well. (I am assuming she was underfed and underweight when you adopted her? Clearly, finding her people and the love you shower on her is helping. :>)

    1. An added bonus of the vacation was that it got me away from work during a busy time. I felt a little bad at first but I did all of the prep to make things easy for my boss and she lived through it. I hope you can get away and have some "Anne" time soon.

I think that Doggo was well cared for at the shelter but it was a shelter. No overfeeding was going on. I think it's more that she's a puppy in a growth spurt. She was so skinny when we got her and now she's a million miles taller and solid muscle.
