Weekly Sweats: A Lotta Running

In this week's edition, my first 30 mile week in a long time and 2 weight workouts.  P.S. my treadmill is short on decimal places, so that's 10 miles in 1:44:13.

I'm linking up with the Weekly Run Down, please head over to Kim and Deborah to check it out.

I wasn't planning to increase my Tues & Thursday distances to 6 miles, it happened naturally this week.  Since I started fueling before my morning runs, I have just a little extra pop of energy and a few extra minutes because I don't need to take breaks so I can get a full 6 miles in.  There's just something about that distance that's very satisfying to my body.  Heck, there's no plan for any of this. I've read a billion half marathon training plans and I've just never seen anything that's clicked for my body, so in lieu of having a plan I just run a lot.

Monday: weights + 4 treadmill miles easy

Tuesday: 6 treadmill miles!  1 mile warmup, 6 x 5 minutes fast/2 minutes recovery, cool down.

Wednesday: off

Thursday: 6 treadmill miles.  1 mile warmup, ladder of 1-2-3-2-1 minutes fast/2 minutes recover, cool down

Friday: weights + 4 treadmill hill miles

Saturday: 10 treadmill miles!  If you recall, a few weeks ago I would have died rather than do double digits on the tready but yesterday I was full of energy and totally down for it.  Actually yesterday was such a good day that it's a pity that it wasn't a race day because I would have killed it.

With cold temps and snow swirling outside, I fired up a movie and pressed the start button on the treadmill.  After a warm up mile, I alternated 0.25 miles fast/0.25 miles slow and the miles flew by.  I took brief breaks at 4.25, 6.25, 8.3, and 9.3 miles.  Things got a bit tough around the 7 mile mark, so I decided that I would get to 8 and call it a day, but by the time 8 rolled around the tough times were gone and I kept after it.

It's been over a year since I've done dd's (double digits) on the tready and while I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience, everything felt good on this run and oh yes, it doesn't hurt that it was a 10 mile tready PR by almost 30 seconds.

Whats Next
I had a great week inside, and with any luck next week I'll be able to get outside and take advantage of the last week of early sunrises before daylight savings time.  Races are right around the corner.

For bragging rights, what's the longest run you've ever done on the treadmill?

  1. Oh the long treadmill run would kill me! It's been so long since I have even been on one. Good for you and nice strong week of workouts. Thanks for linking up today and have a fantastic week ahead

    1. Saturday was one of those days when I wanted to run so badly that even the treadmill wasn't going to stop me. Hopefully we're on the back end of winter now and I'll be getting outside more.

  2. My longest TM run is 11 miles. I was training for the WDW half (takes place in January) and it was bitterly cold outside. I had no choice. Never again! :p

    1. Exactly, I think anytime we're talking TM dd's it's b/c there is no other option.

  3. Wow congrats on conquering double digits on the mill! My longest run is 8 and I swear I whined the whole time ;)

    1. Whining is a totally legit method to get through a treadmill run of any length. Been there, done that, and will do it again!

  4. I think the longest I've done on a treadmill is maybe 4 miles...it gives me vertigo, so I don't think I'd last for a long run.

    1. If I had your views, I would learn to run on snow and never touch a treadmill again!

  5. WOWZA!!!!! My longest adventure with Milly is five miles (I may have done 6 miles once...but I honestly cannot remember if that's reality or fantasy LOL). I simply cannot go any further on that apparatus...as I've whined before, it messes with my form and feels so much tougher than being outside. Yadda yadda yadda But HUGE accolades to you, my dear, that's a major workout!!

    1. Runners gotta do what runners gotta do. With any luck this will be my last weekend inside for a while.

  6. Good for you! I hope this week's weather allows you to get back outside!

While training for the 2010 Boston Marathon, I ran a couple of 16-18 milers and one 20-miler due to how snowy it was that winter. It was as awful as it sounds!

    1. Wow Deb, you get a medal for that! I'm trying to imagine whether I would watch 2 movies back to back or go for something like Gone With the Wind to get through that long of a run.

  7. I did ten miles on the treadmill last summer during an evil heat wave that resulted in the cancellation of the NYC Tri. I don't think I could make myself do it again without the marathon looming overtime.
Think you should totally claim it ia 10 miles in 4m and change. Speedy!

    1. Exactly, I would never do a 10 mile tready for fun, we're after a race here. Runners do what runners gotta do.

  8. Great job on those 10 treadmill miles. It is such a mind game. I’m not surprised getting to 8 was hard, but then you could do 10. It’s been a while, but I think my longest was probably 8 miles.

    1. 8 is a lot. Well, let's be honest, sometimes 1 is a lot for the TM.

  9. Look at you burning up that treadmill! Great work! 10 mill miles is no joke at all! My treadmill mileage PR is 22. It was my last long run before Boston and we had 8" of snow with freezing rain on top. I hunkered down and got that sucker done!

  10. WOW! great mileage!! 10 on the treadmill would kill me! to be honest I have no idea what my longest TM run has been; I do it as little as possible! Way to go - glad you are having the energy to get these runs done!

    1. I wish I could say the same! But we had good weather this morning and I was able to get outside and it was wonderful.

  11. I think the MOST I've ever done on the treadmill was 6miles (10k) and that was PAINFUL!!!! So 10 miles...!!! And that doesn't just take physical strength but mental strength. Well deserved bragging rights!! What a solid week for you :-)

    1. I often feel like TM and outside running are two entirely different sports. To be fair, I was pretty engrossed in the movie that I was watching, so that helped.

  12. Awesome job logging all those miles on the treadmill! My longest treadmill run is 14 miles and it actually wasn't that bad because I covered the time on the screen and I had really good music to listen to while running.

    1. I did get really into the movie that I was watching, so that helped.

  14. Amazing! Well done!

Gosh, I want to say I did six on the treadmill once? And I'm fairly sure I was cursing the whole time.

    Love seeing your numbers build!

  15. You know, 10 miles may be the most I've done on a treadmill. I've done 10 a few times. I honestly can't remember if I've done more than that!
Great job this week! Hopefully we can all get outside more in the upcoming weeks.

    1. Oh Lisa, I got outside this morning and it was so wonderful. Can't wait to do outside miles for all of my runs this spring.

  16. Whoa...10 TM miles. I can barely do 3...and hate every minute.

I am a much better AM runner but just can't get it done before work. Maybe in the summer, I"ll try again.

I do have to fuel before I run even in the morning.

I never found a great marathon plan. I just ran during the week when I had time and did long runs on the weekend.

    GL.

    1. Listen, I am so glad the treadmill is an option because it's my only option in the winter, but I am also looking forward to being an all-outside runner again. Come on spring!!!

  17. I've done 20 miles on the treadmill. By that last hour, I was getting pretty darn antsy to be done, but it beat going outside in the crappy weather! I haven't watched a movie on the treadmill in a long time. I seem to do better with shorter shows. My attention span isn't that great for the longer shows! That being said, I do have a few movies I'd like to watch - so maybe I need to start watching movies again! Great job on your runs this week. Woohoo on the dd's!

    1. Exactly, runners will always get it done, even if it means the treadmill. When I got my first treadmill, I literally watched my way through every DVD that I own.

  18. I think my longest was 14 or 16 miles on the treadmill. Wished I could remember. Great job on your run! I laughed when you said "in lieu of having a plan, I run a lot". :-) I love watching shows while running on the treadmill. Makes the time go faster. I live to break up my run so that it doesn't sound like a very long run. If I need to run 10 then I run 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, and 2.5 with a quick break in between.
