Weekly Eats: Tacos and Snark

A weekly roundup: eats, watches, and reads.  There's nothing really new to see here on the food front but I have a snarky movie review and a good book to make up for it.

Breakfasts

All of the usual suspects.  Bacon, egg, and cheese McMuffins show up frequently.

Cheesy English muffins for "second breakfast" on running days.

I don't write about them very much anymore, but my beloved breakfast burritos are still very much on the scene.

Lunches

A lot of random bowls.  This one is leftover rice from Chipotle, roasted sweet potatoes, veg, and herbed tofu topped with BBQ sauce.

Dinners

Monday: leftover Two Peas and a Their Pod Steak Kabobs

Tuesday: a chicken stir fry from Trader Joe's.

Wednesday: Chipotle!

Thursday: chicken parm

Friday: our big night out to the drive in hamburger place

Saturday: hubs and I got take out BBQ

Sunday: it's been a long time since we did a taco night!  We have at least two nights of leftovers.

Watching

Not a lot!  My only "accomplishment" was watching the movie version of The Girl on the Train.  I hadn't thought about either the book or the movie for a good long while but for some reason the title came to mind when I wrote this post.  I went back and reread the book so that meant I had to rewatch the movie to keep the universe in balance.

It was exactly as I remembered it.  The movie doesn't really do anything except retell the book but it has some really fun actors.  All the kudos to Emily Blunt, it's always fun to see Lisa Kudrow, and I'd forgotten that Laura Prepon and Allison Janney were in it.  There's an actor that I can't stand but he plays the bad guy so I even like him in this one.

I have a few "come on now" groaners for the movie which I'll try to tell you about without giving spoilers.

  • In the book Rachel is practically broke and has to reach out to her mom for money.  In the movie it's all good because Rachel has alimony???  Just saying that I'm not familiar with DINK divorces that result in either party getting enough alimony to be their sole source of income years after the divorce.
  • The movie never tells us why the bad guy is bad.   The book builds from Megan is missing==>Rachel has a lot of events in her life that don't make sense==>ah this is all part of a pattern in the killer's M.O. that dates back to his childhood, we have a complete character fleshed out.  In the movie the bad guy does what he does to Rachel because????  It's never explained.

But yes if you've never read the book and you need something entertaining to watch, definitely hit up Girl on the Train.

Reading

Yes yes yes!!!  I found a good book!  The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian.

  1. I have never heard of "The Girl on the Train"! I just watched the trailer, it looks like an awesome movie! Thanks, Birchie!
Now I have to find a way how to get hold of the film.

I hope the Big Project is going well!

    1. Ah, that's the rub. It's not on streaming so I had to get it from the library. The book is really, really good.

  2. Ooh, thanks for the movie rec. The hubs is burnt out on Netflix series, so we’ve been in search of a “one show” commitment LOL Oh my, those cheesy English muffins have me adding them to the grocery list...

    1. English muffins are gold as a post-run snack. One of the few foods I know that can tame runger.

  3. I read the book and watched the movie but it was a few years back so I don't remember. I thought the movie did a better job than most of capturing the book, but it obviously left major pieces out. And note to self: Do not read this blog whilst hungry! Drooling now.

    1. I think the only reason I noticed the things that were left out was b/c I just read the book the week before. It's such a fun watch for the actors.
